Last Updated:
With a career spanning four decades, Thalapathy Vijay has become a cinematic icon, known for his whistle-worthy dialogues, powerful screen presence, and crowd-pulling performances.
Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, aka Vijay Thalapathy, will turn 51 on June 22. Debuting in 1984 as a child artist, it was the 1992 film Naalaiya Theerpu that truly pushed Vijay into the limelight, and since then, there has been no looking back. With a career spanning four decades, Vijay has become a cinematic icon, known for his whistle-worthy dialogues, powerful screen presence and foot-tapping dance numbers.
As fans across the globe are gearing up to celebrate the birthday of South Indian cinema's beloved superstar, let's take a look back at his gleaming career. To mark Thalapathy's special day, binge-watch his most memorable performances that have defined his legendary career:
Ghilli (2004)
How can we not start Vijay's filmography with this blockbuster action thriller, Ghilli? Playing the role of Velu, a fearless Kabaddi player who rescues a girl from a ruthless villain, Vijay delivered a performance that served as a turning point in his career. The film blended athleticism, charm, and action in perfect harmony, making it a fan favourite to date. Trisha, Prakash Raj, Ashish Vidyarthi, Pandu, Dhamu, Mayilsamy, and Ponnambalam also played key roles in the movie.
Theri (2016)
Directed by Atlee, Theri saw Vijay don the role of Joseph Kuruvilla, a seemingly ordinary man with a hidden past. On a mission to protect his daughter, Vijay's emotionally charged performance and action sequences struck a chord with audiences. Though the movie received a mixed response from critics, Vijay's fans showered love for it and pushed it into the Rs 200 crore club. The 2016 crime thriller also featured Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Amy Jackson.
Mersal (2017)
Atlee and Vijay Thalapathy's collaboration has given fans some spectacular films and Mersal is one of those. For the first time in his career, Vijay portrayed three characters—a magician, a doctor and a village messiah—in this Tamil action thriller. With its gripping narrative, star-studded cast, and socially relevant themes, Mersal further cemented his status as a crowd-puller. Besides Thalapathy Vijay, the star-studded ensemble included SJ Suryah, Kajal Aggarwal, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, and Nithya Menen.
Thuppakki (2012)
DYK the slick narrative and Vijay's sharp performance inspired the Bollywood remake Holiday, starring Akshay Kumar? This action thriller, directed by AR Murugadoss, features Vijay as an undercover intelligence officer who battles the deadly terrorists to dismantle a terrorist sleeper cell in Mumbai. The film also starred Kajal Aggarwal, Sathyan, Vidyut Jammwal, and Jayaram, who play significant roles in this riveting action.
Vijay's first film after the COVID-19 lockdown, Master, was a cinematic event that ended up being a smash hit at the box office. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the crime drama featured Vijay as a college professor with a drinking issue up against Bhavani, a gangster, played by Vijay Sethupathi. Despite COVID-19 restrictions, the film grossed over Rs 150 crore and reaffirmed Vijay's box office dominance.

Aamir Khan breaks down recalling his decision to quit films: 'I knew what my directors' dreams and fears were, but not my own children's'
Before the release of Sitaare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan broke down in tears while speaking about a deeply personal phase in his life, one where he contemplated walking away from films to make up for the time he felt he lost with his children and family. The superstar, who has been a part of Indian cinema for over three decades, shared that the Covid-19 pandemic was a turning point that made him reassess his priorities. 'I had not given them any time' Aamir recounted how, during the lockdown, he realised just how much he had neglected his personal life in pursuit of his career. 'All these 18 years of my life were filled with passion, magic and a craze for creativity,' he said in an emotional appearance on Aap Ki Adalat. 'But I was 56, and I started thinking — what have I done with my family, my children, my ammi, and my siblings? I had not given them any time.' With tears in his eyes, the Dangal star shared that his children Ira and Junaid were already in their twenties, and he had no idea what their childhood dreams or insecurities were. 'I knew what my directors' (Ashutosh Gowariker) dreams and fears were, but not my own children's. When I realised this, I was depressed for three days.' Aamir's decision to quit and what changed his mind It was during this time that Aamir decided Laal Singh Chaddha would be his last film. He informed his family and even called Sitaare Zameen Par director RS Prasanna to step away from acting in the project. But it was his children, and ex-wife Kiran Rao, who eventually pulled him back. 'Junaid told me, 'Papa, you're being an extremist. Earlier you gave everything to films, and now you want to give everything to us. There's a middle path.'' Ira, too, expressed that he had already spent significant time with them, and they had their own lives to lead. Kiran, visibly moved, told Aamir, 'You are a child of cinema. If you leave films, you'll leave us too. Don't do that.' Their words struck a chord. Exclusive - Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain actress Shubhangi Atre: The industry will continue to change, it's a bit scary
Actress Shubhangi Atre, who is known for her show Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain, says that the industry has grown by leaps and bounds, and the modes of entertainment are going to continue to evolve. She adds that this can get a little overwhelming at times. 'The industry has already changed a lot, especially after COVID. The work culture and budgeting have changed. And in the next five years, with artificial intelligence growing, I feel things will change even more. It's a bit scary honestly. But I still believe that content is king. If you create good content, it will always work. Today people are very stressed in life, and entertainment gives them a little break from that. Music and entertainment offer relief, so we should focus on creating good content,' she says. Ask her what changes she wants to see, and she says, 'The content on TV is still a bit regressive, and that bothers me. We can definitely make more progressive shows. Second, I feel TV actors don't get the respect they deserve. People often don't take TV actors seriously. There's a perception that TV actors are overexposed or not as good. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? The mindset towards TV actors needs to change.' Meanwhile, she says that the cut-throat nature of the industry is one thing that will not change. 'Competition is very real. Sometimes people don't want to do certain roles, or they leave projects. That's their personal choice, and I respect that. But if someone is more committed, more disciplined, or more eager to work, then yes, they will get opportunities. That's what we call survival of the fittest. I just believe don't snatch work from someone, but if they don't want to do it and you can, there's no harm. Life goes on. Nothing is irreplaceable. And stardom is very temporary. We are just like passing faces on a screen. What truly matters is how well we perform and how much people connect with us,' she says.
