Controversial Loch Lomond Flamingo Land plans recalled

Controversial Loch Lomond Flamingo Land plans recalled

Glasgow Times10-06-2025

In September 2024, the Yorkshire-based theme park operator, Flamingo Land Ltd, had their planning permission in principle rejected by all 14 board members of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs Planning Authority.
Now, plans for the development at Lomond Banks have been recalled by Scottish Ministers reports our sister title The National.
Minister for Public Finance, Ivan McKee (below), said he has recalled the plans as the proposed development raises issues of 'national significance'.
He said: 'I have decided to recall the Lomond Banks appeal as the proposed development raises issues of national significance in view of its potential impact on Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.
'This means that the appeal should be determined at a national level.'
The news comes after more than 50,000 people wrote to McKee in just two weeks, demanding that the Scottish Government withdraw its approval of the mega-resort planning application.
Scottish Greens MSP Ross Greer said the public's opinion on the proposal, which is the most opposed in Scottish planning history with more than 155,000 individuals lodging objections, 'couldn't be clearer'.
He said: 'In just two weeks the Planning Minister has heard directly from over 50,000 people calling on him to block these proposals. Public opinion couldn't be clearer and it is backed up by experts including the Government's own environment watchdog.'
Organisations such as the National Trust for Scotland, the Woodland Trust, the Ramblers, and the Scottish Government environment watchdog, SEPA, also raised objections against the plans.

Ross McElvenny, 26 — pictured for the first time with a patch — shook hands with disgraced American Air Force defector Wilmer Puello-Mota, 28. Next to the sickening social media snap, McElvenny gushed: 'I finally managed to meet Will Puello.' The half-blinded mercenary, from Newton Mearns, near Glasgow, is now a Russian citizen. And he has been travelling the country since leaving hospital after getting surgery on his left eye. Selfies he posted show him in the capital Moscow and also visiting Mamayev Kurgan, a huge memorial commemorating the savage Second World War Battle of Stalingrad, now called Volgograd. McElvenny, who also sustained serious shrapnel injuries after being shelled by Ukrainian forces, had previously shrugged off his plight, saying: 'St happens in conflict.' And the Kremlin squaddie, whose call sign is 'Whisky', insisted he had 'zero regrets'. The Rangers fan added: 'I came here to do what I could to support Russia. I love this country.' We told how McElvenny was hurt in a blast before being fitted with a 'fake eyeball inside what remained of my left eye'. He first hit the headlines last November after it emerged he had been injured while serving in the Donetsk region of Ukraine. Scottish brewer fighting as mercenary for Putin in Russia Previously, he had studied IT at a college in Glasgow after attending Falkland House, a residential school for boys in Fife. We revealed he once had a work experience stint as a schoolboy with the Scottish Government at offices in Atlantic Quay, Glasgow. It was in a placement tailored for pupils with additional support needs. McElvenny told The Scottish Sun on Sunday: 'It was a s**y programme by a school I should have never been in the first place — so they could get some publicity.' He travelled to Russia on a tourist visa last August, then volunteered for Putin's 1099th Motorised Rifle Regiment. The renegade Scot is being probed by cops here and faces prosecution if he returns. We told in December how McElvenny had boasted of becoming 'a citizen of the Russian Federation' after a short ceremony. He called it: 'One of the happiest moments of my life.' His new chum Puello-Mota was in the US Air Force and Massachusetts International Guard before fleeing the sex rap and landing in Russia. The ex-city councillor in Holyoke, Massachusetts, was arrested in nearby Rhode Island in 2020 after cops found explicit images of an underage girl on his phone. He reportedly told officers he thought she was 22, and only later learned she was 17. Puello-Mota was later charged with forgery, counterfeiting and obstructing justice after claiming the seedy snaps were fake. He vanished in January last year, just two days before he was scheduled to answer the charges in a Rhode Island court. US authorities said he boarded a Turkish Airlines flight to Istanbul before disappearing. It is understood the fugitive, who used the call-sign 'Boston', has been fighting as a volunteer mercenary alongside Russian troops in the war with Ukraine. In April last year, footage from propaganda channels showed him signing a military contract. They have spun Puello-Mota's defection as a coup for the Moscow regime.

Lordship of the manor of Rotherham goes on sale for £15,000

The lordship of the manor of Rotherham has gone up for sale - with the deeds to the title priced at £15, Manorial Services said it was "unusual" for the opportunity to buy the title of such a large last changed hands in 1988, and previous aristocratic holders of the manor include the Earls of Shrewsbury, the Dukes of Norfolk and the Earls of Effingham. The latter family lived at Thundercliffe Grange, and held the title for 250 years.A spokesperson for Manorial Services said: "It is very unusual for the lordship of such an important and well-known place to come to the market." They said: "The manor of Rotherham played a central role in the governance of the town before the 19th Century and its illustrious owners include the Earls of Effingham, who sold the lordship in 1988."Rotherham is rightly famous as an industrial powerhouse but throughout its long and fascinating history its lords of the manor have played an important part."This title is now available and we are looking for offers in the region £15,000 for a unique part of Rotherham and Yorkshire history."The title will be sold along with its relevant documents that date from 1536 up until 1878. Rotherham became known for its coal and steel industries, but the market town was founded in the Saxon the Norman Conquest, William the Conqueror awarded the manor to his half-brother, Robert, who became a major landowner. The town was still under the control of the manorial courts until the start of the 19th Century, but these were eventually superseded by a more modern justice lordships currently on sale by Manorial Services include Belper, Derbyshire, with an asking price of £8,500, Micklefield in Hertfordshire, for £8,500, Barforth in Durham for £8,000 and Staunton, Devon, for £8,000. Humza Yousaf slams 'abuse of anti-terror laws against pro-Palestine activists'

Thousands marched on Saturday calling for an end to the war in Gaza, amid concerns that the Iran-Israel conflict could spark wider regional devastation. Former Scottish first minister Humza Yousaf said the Government was 'abusing' anti-terror laws against pro-Palestine activists at a protest in London this afternoon. Thousands marched on Saturday calling for an end to the war in Gaza, amid concerns that the Iran-Israel conflict could spark wider regional devastation. Protesters waved Palestinian flags, donned keffiyeh scarves and carried signs including "Stop arming Israel" and "No war on Iran" as they marched in the sweltering heat in central London. ‌ Addressing crowds at the national march for Palestine in Whitehall, former SNP leader Yousaf said: 'We gather here once more as the dogs of war once again try to sell us lies, this time about an imminent attack from Iran, just as they did when they lied to us about the weapons of mass destruction they told us Saddam Hussein had. ‌ 'So we stand here and we say to Keir Starmer today what we said to Tony Blair in 2003: 'In our name, don't you dare send our sons and daughters on a frivolous war for your political gain'.' Mr Yousaf added: 'While we stand a stone's throw from Downing Street, let's make it clear to the Prime Minister: You try to intimidate us with your anti-terror laws by abusing them, but you'll never silence us as we speak out against the genocide that you're supporting. 'We're not the terrorists – the ones that are literally killing children, they are the terrorists. Let's say clearly to Keir Starmer: 'End your complicity, stop selling arms to Israel, stop supporting a genocide, sanction Israel, recognise the Palestinian state'.' A pro-Palestine protester has meanwhile said it is 'absolutely horrendous' that the Government is preparing to ban Palestine Action. The Home Secretary is preparing to ban the group following its vandalism of two planes at an RAF base, it is understood. If enacted, this would make it a criminal offence to belong to or support Palestine Action. The decision comes after the group posted footage online showing two people inside the base at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire. ‌ The clip shows one person riding an electric scooter up to an Airbus Voyager air-to-air refuelling tanker and appearing to spray paint into its jet engine. Artist Hannah Woodhouse, 61, said: 'Most of us share that horror of actually being part of a genocide because our Government is not only arming the Israeli military, but we're also providing surveillance and training the military in this country.' The Government, since yesterday, have said they're also going to start to try to proscribe peace activists who are trying to take action against the genocide – so Palestine Action are now being targeted by our government, which is absolutely horrendous.' ‌ Speaking at the march for Palestine, Ms Woodhouse added: 'Counter-terrorism measures, it seems, are being used against non-violent peace protesters. The peace activists are trying to do the Government's job, which is to disarm Israel. The duty of any government right now is to disarm a genocidal state.' The march comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East, as Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi warned that any US involvement in the conflict between Israel and Iran would be 'very, very dangerous'. US President Donald Trump reportedly approved plans to launch strikes on Iran earlier this week but held off in the hope Tehran would agree to scale back its nuclear programme. Blasts were heard in southwestern Iran on Saturday as the conflict entered its ninth day, with Israel claiming to have targeted 'military infrastructure'. In London, many demonstrators chanted 'Shame on you' as they passed a small counter-protest organised by the pro-Israel group Stop the Hate near Waterloo Bridge. Police have confirmed that a bottle was thrown at the Stop the Hate counter-protest, though it fell short and no one was injured. A suspect was chased down the Strand by officers and has been taken into custody.
