Takaful Malaysia appoints Charon Mokhzani as new group chairman
KUALA LUMPUR: Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Keluarga Bhd (Takaful Malaysia) has appointed Datuk Charon Wardini Mokhzani as group chairman, effective June 1, 2025.
Charon succeeds Datuk Mohammed Hussein, who retired on May 31 after serving as group chairman since 2020, the takaful group said.
'The appointment of Charon as group chairman marks a significant milestone for Takaful Malaysia, enabling the Islamic financial institution to continue charting a course for sustainable growth and leadership in the insurance and takaful industry,' it said in a statement today.
Charon has held senior leadership roles across the corporate, investment, and government-linked sectors, including as chairman of Export-Import Bank of Malaysia Bhd (Exim Bank), founding chief executive officer (CEO) of Khazanah Research Institute, executive director of Khazanah Nasional Bhd, deputy CEO of CIMB Group, and CEO of CIMB Investment Bank Bhd.
Takaful Malaysia director Mohd Azman Sulaiman said Charon's extensive experience across the financial services, public policy, and legal sectors brings a wealth of knowledge and insight that will be instrumental in guiding Takaful Malaysia's future direction.
'We are confident that his leadership will strengthen our commitment to excellence, innovation, and stakeholder value creation,' he said.
In addition to his corporate achievements, Charon serves on the boards of Yayasan Tuanku Fauziah, Yayasan Tuanku Syed Putra Perlis, and the Kuala Lumpur Business Club, and was a member of the board of Universiti Putra Malaysia.

Selangor Mufti: Liberalism, pluralism deviate from Islam
SHAH ALAM: The concepts of liberalism and religious pluralism contravene the true teachings of Islam and may lead to deviations in faith and confusion within the Muslim community, according to Selangor Mufti Datuk Dr Anhar Opir. He said that although the recent Federal Court ruling stated that the fatwa dated July 31, 2014, does not apply to Sisters in Islam (SIS) Forum Malaysia as an organisation, the fatwa remains valid and binding for individual Muslims. The Mufti explained that the decision does not undermine the fatwa's legitimacy with regard to individuals or the prohibition on any Muslim embracing pluralism, liberalism, or any other beliefs contrary to Islamic teachings. The fatwa was issued in accordance with Syariah law requirements and the Maqasid Syariah principles, including the preservation of religion, intellect, and lineage. 'Our department stands firmly with the Selangor Islamic Religious Council and respectfully supports the Sultan of Selangor's expression of disappointment regarding the Federal Court's recent decision, which stated that the fatwa does not apply to SIS Forum Malaysia due to the fact that it is an organisation, association, company or institution, but instead only applies to individuals. 'However, our department respects the rule of law and judicial decisions made by the Federal Court as the highest judicial institution in the country's legal system,' he said in a statement. In this regard, Anhar advised Muslims not to be influenced by misguided ideas promoting liberalism and religious pluralism under the guise of freedom or human rights propagated through social media, writings, and open forums. He stressed that true Islamic law should be the benchmark, not merely human logic, as the latter could jeopardise one's faith. The Mufti Department also reiterated its commitment to supporting authorities, non-governmental organisations, and individuals in monitoring and correcting any deviant teachings, beliefs, or ideologies that contradict the true Islamic teachings. Prior to this, the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, urged SIS Forum Malaysia to stop using the term 'Islam' in any of its publications, as misuse of the term could confuse the Muslim community. On June 19, the Federal Court allowed the appeal by SIS Forum Malaysia and its co-founder Zainah Mahfoozah Anwar, in their legal challenge against a fatwa issued in 2014 by the Selangor Fatwa Committee declaring the organisation to have deviated from Islamic teachings. A four-judge panel led by Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat in a 3-1 majority decision set aside the fatwa, insofar as it applied to companies and institutions.

AirAsia X targets Central Asia in expansion push
SEPANG: Medium-haul low-cost carrier AirAsia X Bhd plans to focus its flight network expansion on Central Asia, citing strong market potential and the region's status as relatively underserved by commercial airlines. Chief executive officer Benyamin Ismail said the airline began flights to Almaty, Kazakhstan, in March last year and will launch a new route to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, this October. Another new destination is expected to be announced soon. "The Central Asian market is still underserved. Not many airlines fly there. For example, without AirAsia X, getting to Almaty could take up to 18 hours — with AirAsia X, it's just eight hours on a direct flight. "We're focusing on this region. We've started with Almaty, and another route is in development. We're also eyeing Turkiye, Azerbaijan and other Central Asian countries. Hopefully, this will eventually serve as a platform for expansion into Europe," he told reporters after launching the Kuala Lumpur–Tashkent route today. Benyamin said Central Asia not only offers lower tourism costs but also rich historical and Islamic cultural value, making it attractive to Malaysian travellers. He said the Tashkent route launch marked a strategic milestone in the airline's ongoing expansion across Asia and beyond. "Central Asia holds great potential, with Uzbekistan's economy growing rapidly and a rising middle class keen to explore new destinations. "We've seen strong demand for Central Asia travel following the success of the Almaty route. "Our vision is to build a comprehensive network to support regional development, connect travellers to new destinations, and deliver unforgettable travel experiences," he said. Meanwhile, Uzbekistan's Ambassador to Malaysia, Karomidin Gadoev, said the launch of AirAsia X's direct flight to Tashkent was a significant development in Malaysia–Uzbekistan relations. "With Uzbekistan's rapidly growing tourism sector and Malaysia's strong position as a tourism and business hub in Southeast Asia, this route will enhance connectivity, boost tourism exchanges, and offer new investment opportunities. "We are delighted to welcome AirAsia X to this promising market and hope this collaboration yields positive results," he said. According to AirAsia X, promotional fares for the new route start from RM99 for economy seats, available for booking between June 23 and 29, for travel from Oct 15, 2025, to Sept 14, 2026. Located in the heart of Uzbekistan, the capital city of Tashkent is a rapidly developing destination known for its stunning Islamic architecture, bustling bazaars and lush green parks.
