BREAKING: Columbia protester Mahmoud Khalil freed from immigration detention - War on Gaza

Mahmoud Khalil, a former Columbia University student who was one of the most visible leaders of nationwide pro-Palestinian campus protests, was released Friday from a federal detention center.
Khalil, a legal permanent resident in the United States who is married to a US citizen and has a US-born son, has been in custody since March facing potential deportation.
"This shouldn't have taken three months," Khalil, wearing a Palestinian keffiyeh scarf, told US media outside an immigration detention center in Jena, Louisiana hours after a federal judge ordered his release.
"(President Donald) Trump and his administration, they chose the wrong person for this," he said. "There's no right person who should be detained for actually protesting a genocide."
The Department of Homeland Security criticized District Judge Michael Farbiarz's ruling Friday as an example of how "out of control members of the judicial branch are undermining our national security."
Under the terms of his release, Khalil will not be allowed to leave the United States except for "self-deportation," and faces restrictions on where he can travel within the country.
Khalil's wife, Michigan-born dentist Noor Abdalla, said her family could now "finally breathe a sigh of relief and know that Mahmoud is on his way home."
"We know this ruling does not begin to address the injustices the Trump administration has brought upon our family and so many others the government is trying to silence for speaking out against Israel's ongoing genocide against Palestinians," added Abdalla, who gave birth to the couple's first child while her husband was in detention.
Visas revoked
Since his 8 March arrest by US immigration authorities, Khalil has become a symbol of the Trump administration's crackdown on pro-Palestinian student activism over the Gaza war, conflating criticism of Israel's genocidal campaign with antisemitism.
At the time a graduate student at Columbia University in New York, Khalil was a prominent leader of nationwide campus protests against Israel's Gaza war.
Following his arrest, US authorities transferred Khalil, who was born in Syria to Palestinian parents, nearly 2,000 kilometers (1,242 miles) from his home in New York to the detention center in Louisiana, pending deportation.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has invoked a law approved during the 1950s Red Scare that allows the United States to remove foreigners seen as adverse to US foreign policy.
Rubio argues that US constitutional protections of free speech do not apply to foreigners and that he alone can make decisions without judicial review.
Hundreds of students have seen their visas revoked, with some saying they were targeted for everything from writing opinion articles to minor arrest records.
Farbiarz ruled last week that the government could not detain or deport Khalil based on Rubio's assertions that his presence on US soil poses a national security threat.
The government has also alleged as grounds to detain and deport Khalil that there were inaccuracies in his application for permanent residency.
Amol Sinha, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey, which is among the groups representing Khalil, welcomed the release order.
"This is an important step in vindicating Mr Khalil's rights as he continues to be unlawfully targeted by the federal government for his advocacy in support of Palestinian rights," Sinha said.

Egypt's President, Oman's Sultan discuss de-escalating Iran-Israel conflict

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and Oman's Sultan Haitham bin Tariq discussed regional developments in a phone call on Tuesday, with Sisi stressing the importance of halting the current escalation between Israel and Iran, the Egyptian presidency said. A statement from the presidency spokesman said Al-Sisi warned of the serious consequences of expanding the circle of conflict in the region and emphasised the need to return to negotiations to prevent bloodshed. The president also praised Oman's role in mediating between Iran and the United States, affirming the need to restore and strengthen the negotiation process to spare the region from war. For his part, the Sultan of Oman commended Egypt's efforts to stop violence in the region and affirmed his country's keenness to work jointly on the matter. Egyptian Presidency spokesperson Mohamed El-Shennawy added that both leaders stressed the priority of working towards a ceasefire in Gaza and ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid to the enclave 'to save its people from the humanitarian tragedy they are facing due to the Israeli aggression.' They also stressed that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state is the fundamental guarantee for sustainable stability in the Middle East. The spokesperson added that the two leaders affirmed the depth of Egyptian-Omani relations and their keenness to advance joint work in various fields, in line with the historical ties between the two countries.

Israeli army says bodies of three captives recovered in Gaza - War on Gaza

The Israeli military said Sunday that it had recovered the bodies of three captives in Gaza more than 20 months after they were abducted by Hamas militants. "In a special operation... the bodies of the captives Ofra Keidar, Yonatan Samerano, and Staff Sergeant Shay Levinson were recovered from the Gaza Strip yesterday," the military said in a statement. Samerano's father had announced earlier Sunday that his son's body, which was taken into Gaza after he was killed in a kibbutz in the territory on October 7, 2023, had been recovered by the Israeli army. He paid tribute to "the brave soldiers of the Israeli military and the Shin Bet" security service in a message posted on Instagram. The Israeli campaign group the Hostages and Missing Families Forum described Samerano as "a talented DJ who just wanted to make music, have fun, and travel". Keidar, a 71-year-old mother of three, was a resident of Kibbutz Beeri, where over 100 people were killed. Levinson, a 19-year-old tank commander, "engaged and fought terrorists on the morning of October 7 and fell in combat," a statement from the military said. Following the news, the forum repeated their frequent calls for the release of the remaining captives in Gaza, writing on social media: "The hostages have no time. We must bring them ALL home, Now!". Of the 251 hostages seized during Hamas' October 7 ofensive, 49 are still held in Gaza, including 27, the Israeli military says, are dead. Released captives have reported that they were beaten and tortured by Hamas militants while held in isolation in tunnels snaking underneath Gaza. Keith Siegel, a 66-year-old Israeli-American, told of experiencing and seeing various forms of abuse while in captivity during a recent interview with AFP. One of the locations where Siegel was held was so far underground that he was "gasping for breath", he recalled. Since 7 October 2023, Israel's genocidal war in Gaza has killed at least 55,908 people, most of them women and children, according to the Palestinian health ministry in the territory. The UN considers these figures reliable. On Sunday, Israel's President Isaac Herzog called for the "urgent release" of the remaining captives after the United States carried out strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. "This brave step serves the security and safety of the entire free world. I hope it will lead to a better future for the Middle East - and help advance the urgent release of our hostages held in captivity in Gaza," Herzog wrote on X. * This story was edited by Ahram Online.
