New UK Government update for people on RTS energy meter ahead of switch-off this month

The UK Government has announced that thousands of households using the Radio Teleswitching System (RTS) 'will not unexpectedly lose access to their heating and hot water' once the deadline passes on June 30.
Thousands of Scottish households with ageing energy meters will be affected when the mass RTS deactivation begins at the end of this month. The latest figures from Ofgem indicate that as of April 4, 2025, there were 129,814 RTS meters remaining in Scotland.
However, Energy Minister Miatta Fahnbulleh gave reassurance to RTS customers in a written response to Labour MP John Whitby, who asked what steps are being taken to 'ensure that people in rural areas retain access to functioning energy meters' following the RTS switch-off.
Ms Fahnbulleh responded: 'Customers will not unexpectedly lose access to their heating and hot water after 30th June, and we will not allow widespread disconnection.
'Suppliers must fulfil all of their legal obligations to their customers, and that any future, localised phase-out of RTS meters after 30th June must be controlled, planned, and communicated properly to all customers in order to proceed.
'The UK Government will do everything it can to ensure that all customers are protected, and will work with Ofgem to hold suppliers to account if required. We expect energy suppliers to be taking measures, such as deploying roaming teams of installers including in rural areas, to ensure consumers receive replacement meters in a timely manner.'
The head of Scotland's national advice service recently raised the alarm over the slow replacement of thousands of ageing energy meters, warning of a 'looming crisis' just weeks before the deadline.
Andrew Bartlett, chief executive of Advice Direct Scotland, said vulnerable households were among those at risk of being 'left in the cold' with less than a month to go.
In a letter to Ofgem chief executive Jonathan Brearley, he warned that many households remain unaware of what will happen if their RTS meter is not replaced.
A similar letter has also been sent to the regulator by Consumer Scotland, the independent statutory body which represents the interests of customers.
In his letter, Mr Bartlett called for energy suppliers to proactively identify and prioritise vulnerable customers for meter upgrades, as well as a fresh public information campaign.
With the RTS deadline fast approaching, Advice Direct Scotland, which runs the national energy advice service energyadvice.scot, has been receiving more calls from worried households.

Mr Bartlett said: 'With less than a month to go until the RTS signal starts being switched off across the country, it is increasingly clear that progress on replacing them has not been fast enough. Ofgem needs to urgently clarify if it intends to stick to the June 30 deadline and if a phased approach is being taken, which parts of Scotland will be affected first.
'We are picking up a lot of confusion among affected customers, some of whom are trying to have their RTS meters replaced but have been told it isn't possible until after the switch-off.
'At a time when thousands of people are struggling with energy debts and the cost of living, nobody should be left out of pocket for replacing their meter either.
'Our message to consumers is that if you know someone with an RTS meter, especially if they are vulnerable, encourage them to get it replaced before the deadline if they can.
'The most important thing to remember is that free help and advice is available. Anyone who is worried should visit www.energyadvice.scot or call 0808 196 8660 for assistance.'

Octopus Energy customers can enjoy an hour of free usage between 2pm and 3pm this afternoon. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 When the session starts, you can ramp up your electricity use to maximise savings To take part, you need to be an Octopus Energy customer and signed up to OctoPlus, its rewards scheme. You'll also need a smart meter that sends half-hourly readings. During these hour-long "Saving Sessions," any electricity you use beyond your normal consumption will be free. For example, if you typically use 1kWh of electricity during that hour, any extra usage - whether it's charging devices, running the washing machine, or boiling the kettle - will be credited back to your account. All customers with a smart meter, including prepay ones, will receive an alert the day before each session. When the session starts, you can ramp up your electricity use to maximise savings. The big question is, how much can you actually save? According to Ofgem, a typical household uses between eight and 10kWh of electricity per day. On Octopus Energy's standard variable tariff, electricity costs roughly 27p per kWh. So if you use 1kWh more electricity during a free electricity session, your account will be credited with 27p. The bizarre reason my smart meter won't work & I miss out on cheaper bills If you use 2kWh extra, you'll get 54p, and for 3kWh extra, you'll receive 81p. The more you use, the more you save. For example, if you were to use 5kWh of electricity during the free hour - by running your laundry, dishwasher, kettle, cooker, and hoover - you'd be credited with £1.35. Of course the exact amount you'll earn from taking part in the scheme will depend on the unit rate charged on your tariff and how much extra energy you use during each session. How do I calculate my energy bill? BELOW we reveal how you can calculate your own energy bill. To calculate how much you pay for your energy bill, you must find out your unit rate for gas and electricity and the standing charge for each fuel type. The unit rate will usually be shown on your bill in p/ standing charge is a daily charge that is paid 365 days of the year - irrespective of whether or not you use any gas or electricity. You will then need to note down your own annual energy usage from a previous bill. Once you have these details, you can work out your gas and electricity costs separately. Multiply your usage in kWh by the unit rate cost in p/kWh for the corresponding fuel type - this will give you your usage costs. You'll then need to multiply each standing charge by 365 and add this figure to the totals for your usage - this will then give you your annual costs. Divide this figure by 12, and you'll be able to determine how much you should expect to pay each month from April 1. What do other supplier's offer? British Gas British Gas' Peak Save Sundays scheme offers millions of customers half-price electricity for using their energy during certain hours. It offers qualifying customers half price electricity between 11am and 4pm every Sunday. The energy firm said over 650,000 customers had already signed up to the scheme, saving a combined £13million between them. You can sign up to the scheme by visiting The supplier will then be in touch with you if your application is successful. After that, your savings will appear as "PeakSave Credit" on your next energy bill or online statement. Be aware that you can only sign up to the scheme if you have a smart credit or prepayment meter that can send half-hourly meter readings. If you don't have a smart meter, don't worry, British Gas will install one for free in your home. EDF Energy EDF is brought back its popular Sunday Saver challenge this summer, offering customers a chance to slash their bills by earning free electricity. The offer kicked off on Monday, June 2 and runs throughout the month, giving households the chance to rack up free power to use. Five Sundays of up to 16 hours of free electricity are up for grabs. That's a total of 80 hours of free electricity over the two month period. The dates include June 15, June 22 and June 29, followed by July 6 and July 13. However, customers must have signed up before 11.59pm on Sunday, June 1 to take part in the latest scheme. Next Next is giving new and existing customers free electricity on every bank holiday until March 2026. The next one is the August bank holiday on August 25. Next said its offer could save households £3.50 every bank holiday - which would save you around £21 over the course of a year. To get the deal you need to be signed up for the supplier's Pledge tariff. Ovo Energy Ovo Energy offers customers the chance to win free energy if they reduce their consumption during peak times. The Power Move offer gives customers the chance to win up to £2,000 of free energy if they use 85% or more of their energy at off-peak times. For every month a customer's peak energy usage is less than 15% they are entered into a prize draw. Five customers win the top prize of £2,000 worth of energy to use over one year, with 200 winning £50 prizes and 22,850 receiving £2 of free energy. Danielle Bett, a Scottish-Israeli who was born in the capital, is an opponent of the Israeli PM's 'horrific' military action in Gaza, has said she worried the country's reputation could be tarnished forever. The 35-year-old, who now lives in the Ramat Gan area, said residents were struggling to cope with their 'dystopian' new lives after Netanyahu plunged the nation into a war against Iran on June 13, reports The Sunday Mail. She spoke of local businesses shuttered up and nightly trips to bomb shelters as an unprecedented barrage of Iranian ballistic missiles rain down on her community. Our sister publication, the Sunday Mail, spoke to Danielle on Thursday, June 19, just hours after a missile strike injured dozens of people in a business district close to her home. 'In this region, that's become incredibly dehumanising.' Danielle questioned Netanyahu's motives in escalating the Iran conflict at a time when he faces corruption charges and unpopularity at home. She added: 'It is both true - and it is true - that Iran is a serious threat and also that there are very big question over the current Israeli leadership. 'In the war in Gaza, Netanyahu has proven himself to be inadequate and unable to save the Israeli hostages who are still there. 'I can't say, even with the threat of Iran, that I can put my faith in what I see as a very dangerous leadership. 'Unfortunately, the same goes for Trump's interventions and his comments which have been so unclear.' Danielle, who is active on X as @daniellebett in opposing war and civilian suffering in the Middle East, added she was wary of any direct Western military involvement - including from Keir Starmer's UK Government. She said: 'I definitely have concerns about US involvement. 'We need to know if their end game is to reach a diplomatic resolution with Iran with regards to the nuclear programme, or if this is going to spill over into a regional war, or indeed, a global war. 'The level of instability in this region really needs to be taken into account. I'm very wary of this escalating without knowing what the plan is. 'Clearly, Iran is also a concern for the UK and others in Europe. "When it comes to helping with defence, defending civilians from missile launches which the UK has helped with in the past, that's one thing I would put support behind. I think protecting civilians on the ground is the most important thing, not just for us but for everyone. "But diplomacy is always the thing that's brought us the most security… that is what brings us safety, not war."
