Ukraine applies to host Prince Harry's Invictus Games
Ukraine has launched a 'compelling' bid to host Prince Harry 's Invictus Games in four years.
Kyiv, the capital, is among six cities vying to host the 2029 event, despite war-torn Ukraine 's 'complex ongoing geopolitical challenges'.
The announcement comes weeks after the Duke of Sussex made an unannounced visit to Ukraine, where he met wounded military personnel and civilians at a rehabilitation clinic in the western city of Lviv.
In February, Dominic Reid, the outgoing chief executive of the Invictus Games Foundation (IGF), expressed hopes of holding the event in Ukraine as soon as possible after the war ended.
He said the country was now home to '100,000 amputees'.
The Foreign Office currently advises against all but essential travel to certain parts of Ukraine including Kyiv.
The IGF said: 'Notwithstanding the complex ongoing geopolitical challenges, Ukraine has submitted a compelling expression of interest for hosting a future Invictus Games.
'With a demonstrable pressing need and powerful rationale for an internationally collaborative approach, Kyiv emphasises its legacy of hosting major international events and its commitment to using the Games as a platform for innovative recovery and rehabilitation services for its veteran population.'
It said a multi-ministerial commission would oversee planning and delivery.
Natalyia Kalmykova, Ukraine's veterans affairs minister, who met Prince Harry during his trip, said: 'Sport is a key function in veterans' healthcare.
'It's thanks to our relationship with Invictus that we established, and continue to develop, the role of sports in recovery in Ukraine, and why it's included in the veteran policy strategy.'
The Ukrainian team has played a prominent role in the Games in recent years.
In 2023, Harry and Meghan embraced Ukrainian silver medalist Yulia 'Taira' Paievska during the presentation ceremony in Dusseldorf, Germany.
The military medic had been due to participate in the 2022 event in The Hague but was captured by Russian forces during the siege of Mariupol shortly beforehand.
Ms Paievska had previously been given a body camera to capture footage for the Duke's Heart of Invictus Netflix documentary series, which was later smuggled out of the country.
Other bidders to host the 2029 event are Aalborg, in Denmark, the Veneto region of Italy, Abuja in Nigeria, Daejeon in South Korea and San Diego in the US.
The 2029 bids were unveiled at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, and are said to reflect the 'unprecedented global enthusiasm' and growing impact of the Invictus movement worldwide.
Rob Owen, chief executive of the IGF, said it was a record number of bids.
He added: 'We look forward to working with each of these locations over the coming year to develop fuller propositions with the recovery of international wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans at their heart.'
A shortlist will be announced later this year, with the winning host city unveiled next summer.
The next Invictus Games will be held in Birmingham in July 2027, raising the prospect that Prince Harry might bring his children, Archie and Lilibet, back to the UK to be reunited with members of his family.
The first Invictus Games was held in London in 2014 and was attended by the King and Queen as well as Prince William.

Major sporting events and grassroots sport to receive £900 million funding
At least £400 million will also be invested in new and upgraded grassroots sport facilities nationwide after the funding was outlined in last week's Spending Review, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) said. England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland will be co-hosting Euro 2028, with the showpiece men's football tournament expected to generate up to £2.4 billion in socio-economic value alone, the DCMS said. Lisa Nandy said the investment represented 'major backing' to deliver world-class sporting events (Gareth Fuller/PA) Other major events scheduled to be held in the UK include the women's Rugby World Cup in England this summer, the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the Invictus Games, founded by the Duke of Sussex, in Birmingham in 2027. Earlier this month, more than 100 athletes called on the Prime Minister to support a London bid for the 2029 World Athletics Championships. But the Government is yet to commit to the bid, but has not ruled it our either, with a spokesperson saying it was working with UK Sport to secure a series of major sporting events up until 2035. However, the DCMS confirmed that work was continuing to develop a bid for the UK to host the women's Fifa World Cup in 2035. Sporting bodies and local leaders for grassroots initiatives will work closely with the department to establish what each community needs before further plans are laid out. It said the investment will not only help create jobs and boost regional prosperity, but would also reduce barriers to opportunity and 'bring communities together through shared national moments'. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said: 'Sport tells our national story in a way few other things can, uniting communities, inspiring millions, and showcasing our nation on the global stage. 'This major backing for world-class events will drive economic growth across the country, delivering on our plan for change. 'Coupled with strong investment into grassroots sport, we're creating a complete pathway to allow the next generation of sporting heroes to train and take part in sport in communities across the UK.' The peloton rides past as stage two of the Tour de France passes York Minster, Yorkshire in 2014 (John Giles/PA) The announcement comes after Ms Nandy previously pledged £100 million to upgrade sports facilities across the UK, including new and improved pitches, changing rooms, goalposts and floodlights, back in March. Nick Webborn, chairman of UK Sport, praised the new funding as having 'huge potential to drive economic growth, bring people together and inspire the next generation'. He said: 'We believe that live sport is a fundamental part of this country's social fabric. 'We are really excited to be working with the Government and support their commitment to secure the pipeline of big events beyond 2028 to ensure we can continue to reach, inspire and unite people in every corner of the country.' Stuart Andrew, the Conservative shadow culture secretary, said: 'Funding for major sporting events and grassroots sport is welcome – but the spending review was no boon for British sports. 'Rachel Reeves' tax hikes are forcing schools to sell playing fields and driving up business rates for stadiums. 'At the same time, Labour have scrapped the Opening Schools Facilities fund and the National Citizen Service – depriving young people of sporting opportunities. 'Labour must recognise that their economic mismanagement is dealing a devasting blow to the sports sector.'

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca yet to speak to Mykhailo Mudryk after doping charges
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has revealed he has not yet spoken to winger Mykhailo Mudryk since the Ukrainian was charged with violating anti-doping rules. The 24-year-old is facing a lengthy ban after the Football Association announced on Friday it had charged the player. Advertisement Mudryk has not played since being suspended last December after testing positive for a prohibited substance. The Chelsea manager has not spoken to Mudryk since hearing of the charge he faces. Photo: Rafal Oleksiewicz/PA. He was last seen in public at the Europa Conference League final in Wroclaw last month having attended in a private capacity. Mudryk is not allowed to train with the squad, who are currently at the Club World Cup in the United States. Speaking ahead of the Blues' second match of the tournament against Flamengo in Philadelphia on Friday, Maresca said: 'I spoke with 'Misha' in Poland when we played the Conference League final but I didn't speak with him since that time. Advertisement 'To be honest, I didn't see the news. They communicated (it to) me last night. There is nothing more that I can add at the moment because I don't have more information.' Chelsea did not officially comment after the charges were announced but have previously said they are supporting the player. Maresca said: 'The last time I spoke with Misha he was quite good. I didn't see him worried, or at least I didn't see him not good. It was OK. 'I don't know how he is now but for sure in the next days, weeks, we're going to have a talk.' Chelsea are in the market for a new winger this summer, and have been heavily linked with Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Gittens, but Maresca says that is not because of the Mudryk situation. The Italian said: 'We had already one entire season, almost, without Misha. 'We've decided to go for a winger not because of Misha. It's something quite clear, it's a position that we need to improve.' Maresca dismissed speculation over the future of another winger in England international Noni Madueke, with reports Arsenal are monitoring his situation. Advertisement Maresca said: 'Noni is our player. In this moment, you can read much speculation about many players, but Noni is our player. We consider Noni our player for next season.' Maresca is set to make changes to his side for the Flamengo clash at Lincoln Financial Field due to the anticipated heat. The Blues, who opened their campaign in Group D with a 2-0 win over LAFC, are set to face the Brazilians at 2pm local time, with the temperature forecast to reach 28C. Maresca said: 'It's not easy because of the temperature. This is the reason why we're going to try to rotate players. Advertisement 'Unfortunately for us, as a Brazilian team, they are more used to playing in this temperature – but it doesn't matter. We're going to try to do our best to win the game.'

Enzo Maresca has not spoken to Mykhailo Mudryk since May, manager reveals
Enzo Maresca has said he has not spoken to Mykhailo Mudryk since the Football Association announced on Wednesday that the Chelsea winger has been charged with doping offences. Mudryk is facing a four-year ban if he is found guilty by the FA of taking a banned substance. Maresca said he still trusts the Ukraine international and plans to check on his welfare soon, but Chelsea's head coach added that he has had no contact with the 24-year-old since May. 'I spoke with Misha in Poland when we played the Conference League final,' he said. 'I didn't speak with him since that time. 'To be honest, I didn't see the news. They communicated to me last night. 'The last time I spoke with Misha he was quite good. I didn't see him worried or at least I didn't see him not good. Since that day I didn't speak with him, so I don't know how he is now. But for sure in the next days and weeks we are going to have direct contact with him.' Mudryk has not played since November and was provisionally suspended the following month after producing a positive A sample. It is believed the banned performance-enhancing substance meldonium was found in his system. 'Misha is a Chelsea player,' Maresca said. 'Until he's not a Chelsea player, I will trust all the Chelsea players. It's not just about Misha. It is in general.' Maresca said Chelsea would sign a winger regardless of the outcome of Mudryk's case. They are keen on Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Gittens and have made an inquiry for Lyon's Malick Fofana. 'We had already one entire season almost without Misha,' Maresca said. 'We're going to decide to go for a winger not because of Misha. It's something quite clear that it's a position that we need to improve.'
