Pixel phones may finally get native flashlight brightness controls, years after Samsung and Apple

Mishaal Rahman / Android Authority
TL;DR Google may add native flashlight brightness controls to Pixel phones in the next quarterly release of Android 16.
While the hardware has long supported it, Pixel users currently need to use an app to adjust the flashlight's intensity.
The new feature, discovered in the latest beta, will likely make the Quick Settings flashlight tile expandable.
Nearly every smartphone has an LED flash on the rear that you can use as a flashlight in a pinch, but most don't let you adjust its intensity, leaving you stuck with a light that's either too dim or too bright for the situation. Google Pixel phones currently lack a flashlight brightness slider in the Quick Settings panel, but that could finally change in the next quarterly release of Android 16.
While Samsung Galaxy devices have offered flashlight brightness controls for years, stock Android only added support for the underlying functionality with the Android 13 release in 2022. This update introduced an API that allows apps to control flashlight brightness, provided the phone's hardware supports it.
Most Pixel devices already support brightness control at the hardware level, but Google has yet to provide a built-in way to access it. As a result, Pixel users must turn to third-party apps like FlashDim or Google's Magnifier app to adjust the flashlight brightness, both of which use the Android 13 API to provide a brightness slider. This workaround is especially needed on newer Pixel phones, which oddly default to 50% brightness when the flashlight is toggled from the Quick Settings panel.
It was always strange that Google's own Magnifier app provides a UI for adjusting the flashlight brightness while the Android OS doesn't, but Google is finally rectifying this discrepancy. While digging through the latest Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 release, we spotted new code that hints at a 'Flashlight Strength' dialog being added to the System UI.
Code Copy Text Flashlight Strength
Although there aren't many references to this dialog yet, we believe Google will make the flashlight tile expandable, similar to the Internet and Bluetooth tiles. Thanks to tipster Nail Sadykov who managed to activate the dialog, we can confirm this will be the case. Sadykov first revealed the existence of the feature in a post on his unofficial Google News Telegram group a few weeks ago, and he shared some images with Android Authority that show the feature in action.
Nail Sadykov
Tapping the tile's icon will toggle the flashlight, while tapping its text label will open the new 'flashlight strength' dialog with a slider. When the flashlight is enabled, the brightness level will be shown underneath the text label in the tile. If the tile has been shrunk, the brightness level won't be shown and a long press will be required to open the dialog.
The dialog is quite basic in its current form and lacks the visual polish found in Apple's version of the feature. We don't know if Google plans to add a more refined interface later, but it wouldn't be surprising given the competition.
Once this feature rolls out, Google will be joining other manufacturers like OnePlus and Xiaomi in finally offering native flashlight controls. OnePlus quietly introduced this feature to some of its flagships in the past year, and Xiaomi recently did the same for some of its devices.
Flashlight brightness controls in One UI 8 (Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra)
Flashlight brightness controls in HyperOS 2 (Xiaomi 15 Ultra)
Flashlight brightness controls in OxygenOS 15 (OnePlus 13)
It's surprising it has taken this long for many Android phones to add what's considered a basic function, but the addition is welcome nonetheless.

How Advisors Can Avoid Becoming Over-Reliant on AI

Apparently there's no AI in team. Artificial intelligence is being hailed as a key element of the fourth industrial revolution, and new tools are now assisting financial advisors with taking notes, drafting emails, and brainstorming thought leadership content. In fact, the vast majority of advisors said generative AI helped their practices, according to a survey earlier this year. But AI isn't a silver bullet. It lacks emotional intelligence and a human touch. Advisors risk damaging client relationships if they become too reliant on automation — even for routine tasks. 'AI is poor at empathy so far,' said Adrian Johnstone, CEO of the CRM platform Practifi. 'Advisors need to recognize where the personal connection is most powerful, and use AI to automate and alleviate the lesser functions.' READ ALSO: What the GENIUS Act Means for Stablecoins and Advisors and Why UBS Is the Only Wirehouse to Allow Podcasting Today, most advisors use AI to boost meeting efficiency and streamline workflows. Ideally, this frees up more time to spend with clients, but misusing these tools can backfire. 'The common refrain of disaffected clients is: 'I pay you to understand me, my goals, and my fears, not to outsource me to a machine,'' Johnstone said. Wealth management is built on bespoke service, but AI hasn't yet learned to fully adapt to individual client needs and goals. While tools that draft emails and website content are improving, the output still reads 'hollow and generic,' Johnstone warned. Use it or Lose it. Client-facing AI tools can be 'extremely risky' because they can't interpret emotional undertones of client's concerns, said Rafael Loureiro, CEO of an estate planning platform. Still, AI can be useful for quick, factual tasks. 'If it's midnight on a Sunday and a client asks, 'What was my marginal tax rate last year?' that's a perfect use case,' Loureiro said. 'It's not doing financial planning, but answering factual questions.' Everything in Moderation. This isn't the first time new tech or strategies meant to disrupt the wealth management industry have wound up causing trouble for advisors and their clients. Will Trout, director at Datos Insights, pointed to the 2008 financial crisis as a warning. 'Firms that over-relied on risk models without human oversight suffered catastrophic losses,' he told Advisor Upside. This post first appeared on The Daily Upside. Meta and Oakley Are Launching AI-Powered Glasses This Summer

Meta on Friday unveiled a new line of AI-powered glasses made in collaboration with Oakley. The Oakley Meta HSTN will drop later this summer with a $399 price tag, Meta said, with a $499 limited edition version available for preorder on July 11. Oakley's parent company EssilorLuxottica previously partnered with Meta on Ray-Ban branded AI (META) and Oakley unveiled a new line of AI-powered glasses Friday that will be available for preorder starting next month. The Oakley Meta HSTN glasses include an Ultra HD camera, open-ear speakers, and the Meta AI app built in, allowing users to take hands-free photos and videos. It also comes equipped with a longer battery life than earlier models of Meta AI glasses. A limited-edition version of the HSTN will be available for preorder starting July 11 for $499, with a $399 version expected to launch later this summer. The new Oakley glasses are Meta's latest collaboration with eyewear maker and Oakley owner EssilorLuxottica, which also partnered with the tech giant on a line of Ray-Ban Meta glasses. A line of Prada glasses is expected in the future, according to a report from CNBC. 'Glasses have emerged as a major new hardware category of the AI era,' Meta said in a statement. It isn't the only Big Tech player trying its success with AI-powered eyewear. Alphabet's (GOOGL) Google in May said it partnered with glasses retailer Warby Parker (WRBY) to develop AI-powered glasses. Google committed to investing as much as $150 million, including buying a stake in Warby Parker. Snap (SNAP), meanwhile, has said it plans to launch the latest version of its own AI glasses, known as Specs, in 2026. Meta shares were down about 2% to just above $684 in Friday afternoon trading. They've added roughly 17% of their value since the start of the year. Read the original article on Investopedia
