Vargas has tiebreaking hit in 8th inning as White Sox rally to beat Blue Jays 4-2
TORONTO (AP) — Miguel Vargas hit a tiebreaking double in the eighth inning and the Chicago White Sox rallied to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2 on Sunday.
Vargas had two hits and drove in a pair as the White Sox won a series for the first time since taking two of three against Kansas City from June 6-8.
Chicago had lost nine of 10 coming into Sunday's game. The White Sox snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 7-1 win Friday.
Bo Bichette's RBI single in the seventh gave Toronto a 2-1 lead but the Blue Jays' bullpen couldn't hold it. Left-hander Brendon Little (3-1) took the loss while closer Jeff Hoffman blew his fourth save opportunity in 21 chances.
Activated off the paternity list before the game, White Sox right-hander Adrian Houser allowed two runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.
Jordan Leasure (2-4) got two outs in the seventh and Brandon Eisert worked the eighth. Rookie Grant Taylor finished for his first career save.
With temperatures in Toronto hovering around 90 degrees and high humidity making it feel even warmer, the retractable roof at Rogers Centre was kept closed Sunday.

CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) — Tommy Fleetwood has never come closer to his first PGA Tour victory. The 34-year-old Englishman led by three strokes with four holes to go in the Travelers Championship on Sunday and still had a one-stroke lead on No. 18 before two-putting from inside seven feet and watching Keegan Bradley steal the win. 'I'm upset now; I'm angry,' Fleetwood said calmly. 'I would love to, you know, just go and sulk somewhere — and maybe I will — but there's just no point making it a negative for the future, really. Just take the positives and move on.' Fleetwood has seven European Tour victories and been on two winning Ryder Cup teams, scoring the clinching point at Marco Simone two years ago. He has top five finishes in in all four majors, including runner-ups in the 2018 U.S. Open and the 2019 British. But he's 0 for 84 in regular PGA Tour events, earning the unwelcome distinction of being the best player on tour without a victory. He is the only player with to earn more than $30 million on tour without a win. 'Search goes on, I guess,' he said. 'When it happens, it will be very, very sweet.' Fleetwood's previous close calls also include the 2023 Canadian Open, when he lost to Canadian Nick Taylor, and the 2019 British, when he lost to Irishman Shane Lowry at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. 'Keegan made birdie, so fair play to him. But still feel like from where I was, I should at least be in a playoff,' Fleetwood said. 'So, yeah, it's a crappy way to finish.' Bradley could sympathize. 'I know how hard it must be for him. He's just an unbelievable player, and he's fighting so hard to get his first win,' the Vermont native said after claiming his eighth tour victory and his second at the only current tournament in New England. 'It's a weird thing to be on the other side of that. I do feel bad for him, but I've got to go out and do what I need to do,' Bradley said. 'But he battled today, and I really hope that he gets his win soon.' LONG POND, Pa. (AP) — Chase Briscoe returned to victory lane Sunday at Pocono Raceway, conserving fuel down the stretch to hold off Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin for his first win with his new race team. Briscoe raced his way into an automatic spot in NASCAR's playoffs with the win and gave the No. 19 Toyota its first victory since 2023 when Martin Truex Jr. had the ride. Briscoe lost his job at the end of last season at Stewart-Haas Racing when the team folded and he was tabbed to replace Truex in the four-car JGR field. Hamlin, who holds the track record with seven wins, appeared on the brink of reeling in Briscoe over the final, thrilling laps only to have not enough in the No. 11 Toytota to snag that eighth Pocono win. 'It was just so hard to have a guy chasing you, especially the guy that's the greatest of all time here,' Briscoe said. Briscoe, who won an Xfinity Series race at Pocono in 2020, raced to his third career Cup victory and first since Darlington in 2024. Briscoe has been on bit of a hot streak, and had his fourth top-10 finish over the last six races, including a seventh-place finish in last week's ballyhooed race in Mexico City. He became the 11th driver to earn a spot in the 16-driver field with nine races left until the field is set. Hamlin finished second.
