AICB holds 8th ceremony to confer top banking honour

(L-R) CBI president Paul Denton, AICB chairman Azman Hashim, Bank Negara Malaysia governor Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour, and Central Bank of the Philippines governor Eli M Remolona, Jr, at the conferment ceremony at Sasana Kijang on Saturday.
PETALING JAYA : The Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers recently held its 8th Chartered Banker conferment ceremony, honouring the commitment of banking professionals who exemplify the highest standards of professional excellence and lifelong learning.
The ceremony conferred the prestigious Fellow Chartered Banker status on 14 distinguished industry leaders, including AICB council member Rashid Mohamad, group managing director and group CEO of RHB Bank Berhad.
'Additionally, 71 AICB members were conferred the Chartered Banker status, while over 500 members attained the Associate Chartered Banker status,' the institute said in a statement.
Bank Negara Malaysia governor Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour in a special address said that Malaysia has invested significantly in developing talent in the financial sector.
'Over the years, we have developed a comprehensive ecosystem of talent affiliates providing training, certification, and future-looking guidance on the skills needed by the financial sector.
'I also wish to highlight the important role played by financial institutions to further complement these efforts through their respective learning and development academies,' he said.
He added that while the financial services industry benefits from a good talent development ecosystem, more collective action was needed to future-proof the workforce.
AICB chief executive Edward Ling said that the institute is strongly committed to expanding the growing community of over 800 Chartered Bankers in the next two years, empowering the industry with forward-looking capabilities.
Held under the theme 'Charting the Growth of Finance', the ceremony highlighted the need to nurture future-ready, ethical finance professionals amid rising challenges in cybersecurity, data privacy, sustainable finance, and digital disruption.
A key highlight of the event was the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award by Chartered Banker Institute president Paul Denton to AICB chairman Azman Hashim.
This global recognition – the first awarded by CBI in over a decade – celebrates Azman's decades-long leadership in promoting ethical banking and professional excellence across the region.
Governor Eli M Remolona, Jr, of the Central Bank of the Philippines was also conferred the AICB Honorary Fellowship, one of the institute's highest distinctions.
The prestigious award recognises Remolona's transformative contributions towards fostering greater Asean banking integration, effective policymaking, and championing talent development within the financial sector.

Bursa opens marginally lower in absence of catalyst

KUALA LUMPUR : Bursa Malaysia opened marginally lower in the absence of new catalyst, coupled with the closure of Wall Street on June 19, an analyst said. At 9.06am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) declined 0.79 of-a-point to 1,500.65 from Thursday's close of 1,501.44. The benchmark index opened 0.50 of-a-point lower at 1,500.94. The broader market was negative, with 118 decliners outnumbering 68 gainers, 192 counters unchanged, while 2,046 were untraded and 25 suspended. Turnover stood at 56.66 million shares worth RM24.34 million. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd's equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said Wall Street was closed for a holiday yesterday as traders were pondering over the involvement of the US in the Middle East conflict. The US 10-year Treasury yield eased to 4.39%. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index (HSI) declined sharply on inflationary concerns induced by prevailing higher tariffs coupled with the conflict in the Middle East. This also disrupts global crude oil supply and could be inflationary as well. Back home, the FBM KLCI on Thursday closed just above the 1,500 level, likely due to continued foreign selling. 'Nonetheless, we would advocate investors to accumulate blue chips if and when the index dips below the 1,500 mark at around the 1,480 threshold,' Thong told Bernama. Among heavyweights, Maybank gained 2.0 sen to RM9.62, Tenaga Nasional fell 4.0 sen to RM14.18, CIMB was 1.0 sen higher at RM6.59, while Public Bank, IHH Healthsare and CelcomDigi remained unchanged at RM4.19, RM6.85 and RM3.82 respectively. Among the most active stocks, Velesto Energy was flat at 18.5 sen, Magma eased half-a-sen to 46 sen, Pavilion REIT was down 6.0 sen to RM1.48, Aizo dipped half-a-sen to 8.0 sen and Dataprep added half-a-sen to 12 sen. On the index board, the FBM Emas Index lost 7.90 points to 11,215.84, the FBMT 100 Index shed 7.68 points to 10,996.32, and the FBM Emas Shariah Index declined 15.09 points to 11,217.80. The FBM 70 Index lost 18.82 points to 16,074.63 and the FBM ACE Index dropped 24.59 points to 4,390.46. By sector, the Plantation Index narrowed 4.34 points to 7,214.27, while the Energy Index declined by 0.71 of-a-point to 738.94. The Financial Services Index rose 19.36 points to 17,349.51, but the Industrial Products and Services Index slid 0.20 of-a-point to 148.04.

Bursa slips in early trade amid rising geopolitical risk

KUALA LUMPUR : Bursa Malaysia trended lower in early trade today as investors turned wary amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, an analyst said. At 9.07am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) declined 13.03 points, or 0.87% to 1,489.71 from Friday's close of 1,502.74. The benchmark index opened 9.55 points lower at 1,493.19. The broader market was negative, with 479 decliners thumping 72 gainers, 217 counters were unchanged, while 1,664 were untraded and 39 suspended. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd's equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said Wall Street closed mixed on Friday due to uncertainty over interest rate cuts. At the same time, further escalation in the Middle East may weigh on market sentiment in the near term. 'With the US involvement in the war against Iran last Saturday, it would be interesting to see the market's reaction today. 'Given the possible heightened volatility, we expect the index to hover within the 1,480-1,500 range today and would be buyers of blue chips at the 1,480 level,' he noted. Among heavyweights, Maybank dropped seven sen to RM9.59, Public Bank fell three sen to RM4.18, CIMB and CelcomDigi were each four sen lower at RM6.61 and RM3.75, respectively, while Tenaga Nasional and IHH were flat at RM14.22 and RM6.85, respectively. InvestPenang seeks clarity on Intel's plan as new Penang facility nears completion amid reported global job cuts

GEORGE TOWN, June 23 — InvestPenang will be meeting with chip giant Intel soon to gain clarity on the company's plans for its new facility in the state. Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the meeting, expected to take place this week or next, will focus on Intel's progress and intentions for the nearly completed site. 'The meeting, either this week or next week, is to know about their plans with regard to the facility that they are constructing,' he told a press conference at his office today. He said the investment for the facility was announced in 2021 and that the building is now nearing completion. 'These internal features are also in progress,' he said. Chow said he last visited the site a few months ago, and with construction now further along, it was timely for InvestPenang to seek an update. 'I think we let InvestPenang to meet with them to get the updates on the latest position on the facility,' he said. Yesterday, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz said his ministry had held discussions with Intel regarding its reinvestment and expansion plans in Malaysia. According to the minister, Intel has invested RM50 billion in Malaysia to date and employs 12,300 local workers. In April, Bloomberg reported that Intel planned to cut more than 20 per cent of its global workforce to streamline operations.
