Louisville strikes for 6 runs in 8th to eliminate Arizona from College World Series with an 8-3 win

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Zion Rose's two-run single gave Louisville its first lead during a six-run eighth inning and the Cardinals knocked Arizona out of the College World Series with an 8-3 win Sunday.
Louisville's 19th come-from-behind win of the season moved the Cardinals (41-23) to another elimination game Tuesday against the loser of Sunday night's Coastal Carolina-Oregon State matchup.
Arizona (44-21) has lost six straight CWS games over three appearances since 2016.
The Cardinals trailed 3-1 early and came up empty after having runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and fifth innings. When they broke through, the runs came in bunches.
Lucas Moore's sacrifice fly in the seventh made it a one-run game against Garrett Hicks (5-2), and then Arizona had an improbable meltdown with National Stopper of the Year Tony Pluta on the mound after the Cardinals' first two batters reached in the eighth.
Tague Davis's blooper loaded the bases, and then Rose punched a two-run single down the right-field line to put Louisville up 4-3. No. 9 batter Kamau Neighbors singled in another run to cap his 4-for-4 day.
Garrett Pike got caught in a rundown between third and home and scored when Pluta dropped the ball trying to tag him at the plate. Neighbors came home on Alex Alicea's squeeze bunt, and Matt Klein singled to left for the final run.
Tucker Biven (4-0) pitched the last four innings for the Cardinals, working around two singles to hold Arizona scoreless in the ninth. Louisville is 26-0 when leading after eight innings and 203-5-1 since the start of 2019.
Adonys Guzman, who singled in the Wildcats' first run in the first inning, hit his second homer of the NCAA Tournament and ninth of the season to give his team a two-run lead in the third.
Freshman Smith Bailey gave Arizona another strong start. He went six innings for the fifth time in six starts, including three straight in the NCAA Tournament. He allowed five earned runs over 18 postseason innings (2.50 ERA).
This was the teams' second meeting of the season. In February, Louisville won 13-1 in Arlington, Texas, in a game shortened to eight innings by the run rule.

LSU sweeps Coastal Carolina in CWS finals for its 2nd national title in 3 years and 8th overall

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — LSU knocked previously unbeaten Coastal Carolina ace Jacob Morrison out of the game with a four-run fourth inning and the Tigers won their second national championship in three years Sunday with a 5-3 victory in the College World Series finals. The Tigers (53-15) completed a two-game sweep of the Chanticleers (56-13), who entered the finals on a 26-game win streak and on Sunday saw coach Kevin Schnall and first base coach Matt Schilling ejected in the bottom of the first inning. LSU gave the Southeastern Conference its sixth straight national title in baseball and 11th in 16 years. It was LSU's eighth, all since 1991 and second most all-time behind Southern California's 12. Tigers coach Jay Johnson became the first Division I coach to win two titles in his first four years at a school. No other coach had accomplished that feat in fewer than eight seasons. Coastal Carolina won the national title in 2016 and was trying to become the first team since 1962 (Michigan) and the fifth all-time to win the championship in its first two CWS appearances. With five-time champion coach Skip Bertman watching from the stands, LSU tied it at 1 in the third on Ethan Frey's RBI double and went up 5-1 in the fourth on two-run singles by Chris Stanfield and Derek Curiel. Coastal Carolina pulled within 5-3 in the seventh against LSU starter Anthony Eyanson when No. 9 batter Wells Sykes hit his fourth homer of the season. That brought on Chase Shores for his fourth appearance of the CWS. The 6-foot-8 right-hander touched 100 mph with his fastball while retiring the first five batters he faced before Dean Mihos, who homered in the second, singled through the right side leading off the ninth. With Tigers fans on their feet and chanting 'L-S-U, L-S-U,' Shores struck out Ty Dooley and got Wells Sykes to ground into a game-ending double play. The Tigers' dugout emptied and the celebratory dogpile behind the mound ensued. ___ AP college sports:

Abbott throws 7 strong innings, lifts Reds to 4-1 win over the Cardinals

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Andrew Abbott retired the final 18 batters he faced in seven commanding innings, and the Cincinnati Reds avoided a three-game sweep with a 4-1 win against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. Jose Trevino, Jake Fraley and Elly de la Cruz each doubled and scored, and Matt McLain hit his ninth home run for the Reds. The Cardinals had a five-game winning streak snapped. Trevino doubled and scored on Fraley's liner to the right-center field gap that put the Reds ahead 2-1 in the fifth. After a passed ball, Fraley scored on TJ Friedl's sacrifice fly. Cincinnati extended the lead when de la Cruz doubled to lead off the sixth and scored on Gavin Lux's RBI groundout. Abbott (7-1) allowed only three singles, including Yohel Pozo's RBI single in the second inning. The Cardinals didn't have another base runner until Taylor Rogers issued a one-out walk to Jose Barrero in the eighth. Abbott had three strikeouts and lowered his ERA to 1.79. Jake Fraley had 10 putouts in right field on fly balls. Emilio Pagán worked a spotless ninth for his 18th save in 21 chances. Miles Mikolas (4-5) allowed three runs, two earned, in five innings for St. Louis. He struck out six and walked one. McLain put Cincinnati up 1-0 on a 387-foot home run into the right-field bullpen in the first inning. St. Louis responded with a run in the second on three straight grounders to the right side — singles by Nolan Arenado and Pozo sandwiched around a fielding error by McLain on Thomas Saggese's grounder to second. Key moment After Pozo's single tied the game and put runners on first and second with no outs, Abbott struck out Jordan Walker to start his run of dominance. He got Barrero to foul out and Brendan Donovan to fly out to end the threat. Key stat The Reds have not been swept in any of their first 25 series this season. It's their longest streak to start a season since 1989 (30 consecutive series).
