Kota Kinabalu: Warisan President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal expressed concern about Sabah's heavy reliance on oil and gas revenue, which accounts for over 40 per cent of projected income. 'The State Government's calculations are based on an oil price of USD76 per barrel, but current prices hover around USD60. 'If prices stay low, Sabah could lose hundreds of millions in revenue which is enough to wipe out the projected RM24 million surplus and push the state budget into a deficit,' he said. He also noted the State's alarming unemployment rate of 7.9 per cent in the third quarter of 2024 (highest in Malaysia) representing over 170,000 jobless Sabahans. 'We want to work together with the rakyat to save Sabah so our children can inherit a future filled with hope and a Sabah we can all be proud of,' he said in a statement, Wednesday. He accused the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Government of mismanaging the State's record RM6.4 billion budget for 2025, claiming it has failed to address the fundamental issues facing Sabahans. Shafie said despite having a budget twice the size of Selangor's and six times larger than Penang's, Sabah remains the poorest state in Malaysia. 'Despite the record budget, Sabah remains the poorest state in Malaysia. Eight out of the 10 poorest districts in the entire country are in Sabah,' he said. 'If the economy is really growing as GRS claims, why are people still struggling to find jobs?' he said. He said employed Sabahans continue to face wage stagnation with median monthly earnings increasing by just RM18 from RM1,864 in Q1 2023, while food prices remain the highest nationwide. Shafie said half of Sabah's workers earn less than RM2,000 a month. He also raised concerns about child welfare in Sabah, pointing out that one in four Sabahan children under five is stunted, the highest rate in Malaysia. 'This reflects a failure in nutrition, rural healthcare and education. The GRS government has failed to plan for the next generation,' he said. He also expressed concern over recent corruption cases in the education sector, including a school principal in Kudat charged with making false claims amounting to RM85, 000 and two education officers remanded for allegedly receiving bribes tied to school maintenance contracts worth over RM600,000. 'These cases reflect a failure in governance. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has repeatedly reported misuse of funds and false claims in Sabah's education system but GRS has done little to fix the system or hold those in power accountable,' he said. Additionally, he criticised the State Government for what he described as wasteful spending on publicity events while neglecting essential infrastructure and services. 'All across Sabah, we see and experience water cuts and murky supply, frequent electricity outages disrupting homes and businesses, crumbling roads riddled with potholes that isolate rural communities and skyrocketing prices of basic goods that continue to hike the cost of living.' * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Warisan urges explanation of ‘hidden' tariff hikes in Sabah

Warisan Kota Kinabalu division information chief Samuel Wong has called for transparency over Sabah's electricity tariff structure, alleging hidden rate hikes under the tiered billing system. KOTA KINABALU: The city's Warisan branch has urged the state government to address what it claims are hidden electricity tariff hikes in Sabah through a quietly restructured tiered billing system. Its information chief, Samuel Wong said that although the state recently announced a six-month waiver of the electricity surcharge under the Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT) mechanism, Sabahans are still experiencing rising bills due to a more complicated and punishing tier structure. 'The government says there's no surcharge, but our bills tell a different story. What Sabahans are facing is a hidden tariff hike, not through official announcements, but via subtle changes to how electricity usage is charged,' he said in a statement. He explained that in 2022, there were five usage tiers ranging from RM0.175 to RM0.450 per 100 units. However, by 2025, the structure expanded to seven tiers, with a new highest rate of RM0.470 per 100 units. 'This expansion and reshuffling of thresholds means ordinary households are now more likely to hit the highest rate even with moderate usage. It's a disguised price hike,' he said. Wong contrasted Sabah's situation with upcoming reforms in Peninsular Malaysia, where the tiered system will be scrapped by July 2025 in favour of real-time tariff reviews based on actual fuel prices and foreign exchange rates. 'The peninsula is seeing meaningful reform. What about us in Sabah? Is the GRS-Pakatan Harapan government even trying to fight for a fair deal for us?' he asked. He also urged the government to abolish the 8% Sales and Service Tax (SST) imposed on residential electricity usage, calling it a burden on essential needs. 'Electricity is essential. Why are we taxing families who are already overpaying under a broken system?' he said. Wong called on Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) and the state government to fully disclose the current tariff structure and present a clear roadmap for reform. 'Sabahans have paid more than enough. We need answers, we need reform, and we need action now,' he said.

THE State Government will continue to strengthen the implementation of inclusive and comprehensive development policies through the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) roadmap in its efforts to ensure sustained progress and the well-being of the people in the state. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said that since its introduction, the policy has had a significant impact, particularly in areas such as economic recovery, investment, agriculture, human capital development, and public welfare. 'Alhamdulillah, we are witnessing growing investment activities and increased state revenue collection in recent years. This is proof of the effectiveness of the government's approach,' he said, in his speech during the Istiadat Pengurniaan Darjah-Darjah Kebesaran in conjunction with the official 74th birthday celebration of the Head of State, Tun Musa Aman, at Istana Seri Kinabalu, Saturday. He added that the State Government is also focusing on the development of the agricultural sector, which is a key contributor to ensuring food security in Sabah. Among the initiatives were establishment of the Sabah Rice and Padi Board (LPBS) and the launch of the Paddy Crop Takaful Scheme (STTP) aimed at increasing the state's rice Self-Sufficiency Level (SSL) from 24 per cent in 2025 to sixty per cent by 2030. 'This is a strategic step to ensure Sabah becomes more self-reliant in basic food production, thereby reducing dependence on imports,' he said. Advertisement He added that human capital development, especially among the younger generation, remains a top priority for the government through various youth development programmes such as skills training, education, entrepreneurship, leadership and sports. Hajiji said the State Government has also approved the establishment of the Sabah State TVET Council as a platform to coordinate and monitor technical and vocational education and training to meet current industry needs. 'We want to ensure Sabah's youths are equipped with the knowledge and skills relevant to contribute to the development of the state and the nation.' Hajiji also emphasised that the strong relationship and close cooperation with the Federal Government will continue to be upheld to ensure Sabah is not left behind in the national development agenda. He said the State Government highly values the various forms of assistance and initiatives provided by the Federal Government, including in infrastructure, health, education, and security. He expressed his appreciation to the Prime Minister for the Federal Government's commitment to defending Sabah's rights and sovereignty, including the successful rejection of external claims on the state at the international level. 'Malaysia's success in repelling foreign claims on Sabah proves that the sovereignty of this state remains firm under the Federation of Malaysia, and this gives confidence and reassurance to all Sabahans,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
