Local dads share joys and challenges of fatherhood
Father's Day often brings heartfelt reminiscences of the roles dads play in society. Several Pretoria fathers have decided to share their profound journeys of fatherhood, filled with laughter, tears, and invaluable lessons.
Rekord this year sat down with a diverse group of fathers to peel back the layers of what it truly means to be a dad today. In their views, whether it's countless sacrifices, teaching their children how to ride a bicycle, attending school meetings or offering comfort after a hard day, fathers play an essential role in the well-being of their families.
Here is what Pretoria dads shared and reflected on their different experiences in fatherhood:
William Lebudi (29) from Silverton said the most exciting part about being a father is seeing your child grow in your presence.
'Although I have one biological child, I am a father of many. Being a protector, provider, and dream maker to children is fulfilling.'
He said being there for children gives him a bigger purpose in life.
'Attending those school meetings and dance classes means a lot for your child.
'It's no longer the same as when we grew up, where our fathers would just buy us school shoes and a uniform, then they've played their part,' he said.
Just like any leader, being a pillar of strength and holding together a family has its ups and downs, which is why they need all the support they can get from their loved ones and the community.
Wesley Petersen (40) from Eersterust shared the challenges he faced as a father.
'My wife and I struggled to have children for some time before we had our now 11-year-old daughter. We went through two miscarriages.'
He said it was the toughest challenge he faced in his life, which is why he wants to provide the best life for his daughter.
'I want to raise my daughter the way my father raised me, with love and by being there at all times.'
Some dads feel that the most challenging part about being a father is not knowing whether you're good enough for your children.
Andries Van Der Walt (52) from Meyerspark said being a father is not always as easy as the way people make it seem, but it is the biggest blessing from God.
'Sometimes you feel tired, stressed, and unsure whether you're good enough or not for your family.
'You only realise when you see your child smile that, 'No, you're doing just fine'.'
He said it feels good to know that he tried his best to raise his children, even through hardships, and he stuck around.
Morgan Simelane (64) from Mamelodi West said the pathway to a happy family is taking responsibility and being there for your family in all aspects.
'I am not just there financially for my family. I provide emotional and mental support as well.'
He said using an 'iron fist' to build a family never works.
'I am in a partnership with my wife. I also help with chores in the house like everyone, and this has set a good example for my children.'
Simon Sibanyoni (31) from Danville shared how his life transformed for the better after he had his first child.
'Having a child made me realise that I could be a better person than I was then. I used to not care about life, I was irresponsible and wasted my years on useless things.'
He said his children are a blessing in his life.

Crèches are now ready to fight fires Tshwane has delivered fire safety equipment, including serviced and upgraded extinguishers, hose reels and hydrants, to nine early childhood development centres in regions 3 and 6. This comes after a routine inspection by the DA caucus's Section 79 Community and Social Development oversight committee, chaired by Phuti Kwenaite. 'Recently, we pointed out there are maintenance elements that have been neglected in Tshwane's ECDs.' She said the fire extinguisher problem was supposed to be addressed two years ago. Kwenaite highlighted the significant risk posed when fire extinguishers are neither present nor functional. 'It is a big risk for the extinguishers not to be there and functioning. MMC for Corporate and Shared Services Kholofelo Morodi confirmed that Tshwane has completed the servicing and upgrading of fire-fighting equipment, with a sharp focus on ECD centres. She said the initiative, executed by Group Property Management, ensures full compliance with national safety standards, specifically SANS 10400 Part T (fire safety) and SANS 1475 (fire extinguishers). Marodi added that these mandate the installation, maintenance and servicing of portable fire suppression equipment. 'It includes the maintenance of fire extinguishers, hose reels, and hydrants and forms part of the city's annual fire safety programme.' She said these maintenance efforts signal a broader shift in Tshwane's multiparty coalition prioritising the safety of employees, children and communities. Marodi added that maintaining a safe workplace supports an efficient municipality and reflects Tshwane's commitment to this principle. 'Reinforcing Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards remains pivotal to protecting employees and service users. 'This intervention forms part of an ongoing effort to strengthen internal systems, promote compliance, and safeguard infrastructure, all aimed at delivering reliable and dignified services to residents.' No injuries reported as blaze destroy 23 buses in Mabopane A total of 23 buses have been destroyed in a fire that broke out at a private bus company depot in Mabopane on Tuesday afternoon, Tshwane Emergency Services has confirmed. Emergency Services spokesperson Lindsay Mnguni said firefighters responded swiftly to the scene and managed to save 14 buses from being engulfed by the blaze. No injuries were reported, and the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. 'When our teams arrived, they found several buses already ravaged by the fire,' said Mnguni, adding that the buses were parked in an open area at the depot. Mnguni further said that the destroyed buses were not in operation and had not been commissioned, meaning public transport services for commuters in the area would not be affected. He added that the buses do not belong to the city of Tshwane. He said firefighters managed to extinguish the fire and remained on the scene to continue damping down operations to cool the fire and eliminate any chance of reignition occurring. Tshwane electrician electrocuted during fault repairs in Pretoria East
A City of Tshwane electrician was injured on Tuesday after being electrocuted while conducting tests to locate a faulty cable in Equestria, East of Pretoria, amid ongoing power outages. The incident occurred during restoration efforts following a widespread outage that affected several eastern Pretoria suburbs, including Wapadrand and Equestria, which lost power at around 23:00 on Monday, June 16. According to Ward 85 councillor Jacqui Uys, the outage was linked to a trip at the Wapadrand Substation. Technicians were deployed the following morning and traced the issue to a cable fault. 'While the team was conducting tests to pinpoint the fault, one of the electricians was electrocuted and suffered burn injuries. The incident also caused the substation transformer to trip again,' said Uys. She said Emergency Services were called immediately, and the injured worker was stabilised on site before being transported to hospital for further care. Following the incident, the technical team was withdrawn to allow for a full safety investigation, which has delayed the estimated time of power restoration in the remaining affected areas. Uys confirmed that while electricity has been restored to most suburbs, a section of Equestria remains without power as work continues. 'Our thoughts are with the injured official and his loved ones during this difficult time,' she said. Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said Tshwane Metro regrets to confirm that one of its electricians was injured earlier today while performing maintenance duties as part of a scheduled operation in Equestria, East of Pretoria. 'The incident occurred during an effort to recover a trip on the network,' Mashigo stated. He said the employee, a member of the switching team, sustained injuries and has since received medical attention. The full extent of the injury is still being assessed. 'In line with safety protocols, the team has been temporarily withdrawn from the site,' he added According to Mashigo an Occupational .Health and Safety (OHS) inspection is currently underway to determine the exact cause and nature of the incident. 'As a result, this may impact the estimated time of restoration (ETR) for affected areas.' Mashigo said the ETR will be communicated tomorrow morning, following the conclusion of the safety investigation. He added that the city appeals for patience and understanding during this period, as the safety of personnel and the public remains our top priority. 'We also urge public representatives to refrain from making premature or misinformed statements, as these can create unnecessary confusion during critical operations.
