India, U.S. discuss carrier cooperation

The Hindu20-05-2025

Continuing the dialogue on aircraft carrier cooperation, India and the U.S. discussed plans for future co-operation under various aspects of Aircraft Carrier Technology at the 8th round of the India-U.S. Joint Working Group on Aircraft Carrier Technology Cooperation (JWGACTC), constituted under the Defence Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI), the Navy said in Tuesday.
A six-member U.S. delegation headed by Rear Adm. Casey Moton, Programme Executive Officer (PEO), Aircraft Carriers, was in Delhi for the dialogue held from May 13 to 16; they also visited various defence establishments in Delhi and Goa. From India, the dialogue was co-chaired by Rear Adm. Vishal Bishnoi, Assistant Controller Carrier Projects. The working group held its first meeting in 2015 and the last edition was held in the U.S. in April 2024.

'Both sides appreciated the remarkable work undertaken by the Joint Working Group towards valuable information exchange on Aircraft Carriers. Plans for future co-operation under various aspects of Aircraft Carrier Technology were discussed and a Joint Statement was also released,' the Navy said.
At Goa, professional interactions were undertaken with the Indian Navy's aviation specialists on carrier operations and technical aspects, it added.
The Indian Navy currently operates two carriers — INS Vikramaditya, acquired from Russia, and the indigenously designed and manufactured INS Vikrant — both of which operate the Mig-29K fighter jets. Unlike the bulk of the U.S. nuclear-powered super carriers displacing 100,000 tonnes, the Indian carriers are medium-sized with a displacement of over 40,000 tonnes, conventionally powered and use a ski-jump to launch aircraft.
The ambitious DTTI initiative between India and the U.S. was announced a decade ago with two joint working groups and four path funder projects for co-development and co-production, though they made no progress.

Puri (Odisha) [India], June 21 (ANI): On the occasion of the 11th International Day of Yoga celebrations, renowned sand artist and Padma Shri awardee Sudarsan Pattnaik on Saturday created a striking sand sculpture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi performing Ustrasana (Camel Pose) at Puri Beach. Below the sculpture, the theme for this year, 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health', was written. His creations are typically accompanied by vibrant colors and intricate designs. He spoke about the deeper meaning of yoga and how it has gone far beyond just being a form of physical exercise. Meanwhile, Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan performed yoga at the Kishan Mela Ground in Pusa, New Delhi, joining thousands of participants across the country in marking the occasion. Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) [India], June 21 (ANI): While Prime Minister Narendra Modi was leading the main event of the 11th International Day of Yoga in Visakhapatnam, 11,000 personnel from the Eastern Naval Command, along with their family members, performed yoga onboard Indian Navy ships and across the Vizag coastline. Eastern Naval Command is proud to join hands with YogAndhra 2025, a landmark initiative spearheaded by the Ministry of Ayush and the State Government of Andhra Pradesh, celebrating the International Day of Yoga in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam, an official statement from the Indian Navy said. In solidarity with the citizens of Vizag and demonstrating commitment to holistic well-being, over 11,000 naval personnel and their family members from Eastern Naval Command would be participating in the grand morning yoga session with the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, the statement added. These naval participants would be occupying around 10 enclosures along the 30-km-long RK Beach stretch, forming an integral part of the historic gathering. In a parallel display at sea, yoga would also be practiced on board Indian Naval ships anchored off Visakhapatnam. The impressive maritime lineup would include frontline Eastern Fleet ships and two Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Vessels, stationed at the Visakhapatnam anchorage off the RK Beach. These ships, silhouetted against the Vizag skyline, stand as powerful symbols of the Indian Navy's commitment to the national vision of 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health.' Pakistan to officially nominate Trump for Nobel Peace Prize

Islamabad [Pakistan], June 21 (ANI): The Pakistani government has decided to formally recommend US President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, citing his 'decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership' during the recent conflict between India and Pakistan, as reported by The Dawn. The conflict ended in a ceasefire after several days of cross-border shelling. In a post shared on X, the government said the international community had 'bore witness to unprovoked and unlawful Indian aggression, which constituted a grave violation of Pakistan's sovereignty and territorial integrity, resulting in the tragic loss of innocent lives, including women, children, and the elderly,' Dawn reported. Following the Indian aggression, Pakistan 'launched Operation Bunyanum Marsoos -- a measured, resolute, and precise military response', the post read. It noted that the response was executed to exercise the country's 'fundamental right to self-defence' and 'carefully to re-establish deterrence', defending its 'territorial integrity while consciously avoiding civilian harm,' Dawn reported. The post further read that 'at a moment of heightened regional turbulence', President Trump 'demonstrated great strategic foresight and stellar statesmanship through robust diplomatic engagement with both Islamabad and New Delhi,' Dawn reported. It continued that the US president 'de-escalated a rapidly deteriorating situation, ultimately securing a ceasefire and averting a broader conflict between the two nuclear states that would have had catastrophic consequences for millions of people in the region and beyond,' as reported by Dawn. 'This intervention stands as a testament to his [Trump's] role as a genuine peacemaker and his commitment to conflict resolution through dialogue,' it added. 'Durable peace in South Asia would remain elusive until the implementation of United Nations Security Council resolutions concerning Jammu and Kashmir,' it observed, as reported by Dawn. The government noted that President Trump's leadership during the 2025 Pakistan-India crisis 'manifestly showcases the continuation of his legacy of pragmatic diplomacy and effective peace-building'. In conclusion, the post read that Pakistan remains hopeful that Trump's 'earnest efforts' will continue to contribute towards regional and global stability, particularly in the context of ongoing crises in the Middle East, including the humanitarian tragedy unfolding in Gaza and the deteriorating escalation involving Iran, as reported by Dawn. Trump has repeatedly said that the nuclear-armed South Asian neighbours agreed to a ceasefire after talks mediated by the US, and that the hostilities ended after he urged the countries to focus on trade instead of war, Dawn reported. The cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan was reportedly agreed upon following a call from Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) to his Indian counterpart, Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai. During the conversation, the Pakistani DGMO proposed an end to hostilities, which was accepted by the Indian side, leading to a cessation of cross-border firing and air intrusions starting from 5:00 pm on May 10. However, Lieutenant General Ghai later disclosed that the cessation of hostilities was short-lived, as Pakistan violated the agreement with cross-border firing and drone intrusions just hours after it took effect. The conflict had initially intensified after the Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting nine terrorist infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK). This operation was a direct response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the death of 26 civilians, including one Nepali national. The Indian military's retaliatory strikes were followed by increased cross-border shelling from Pakistan and a series of counter-responses by the Indian Armed Forces. (ANI)
