Four suspects arrested for murders of two Gqeberha women
Police have arrested four suspects aged between 28 and 46 for the alleged murders of two women in Sakhasonke Village, Gqeberha, on Thursday.
The motive behind the killings of the women, aged 40 and 19, is under investigation.
The arrest of the two suspects was the result of a joint operation led by the Nelson Mandela Bay district detective intervention task team and Operation Bamba members.
'On Thursday night at about 8.30pm, SAPS Walmer officers responded to reports of gunfire. On arrival they discovered the lifeless bodies of two women, aged 40 and 19, both with multiple gunshot wounds,' said Capt Sandra Janse van Rensburg.
Acting on a lead, members expanded their search for the suspects to local hospitals.
They arrested the first suspect at Dora Nginza Hospital while he was receiving treatment for a leg injury.
'Further investigations led the members to a residence in Greenshields Park, where three more suspects were arrested.'
During the operation, police confiscated a Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun and a box of 9mm ammunition.
'The suspects are facing charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition,' said Van Rensburg.
They are set to appear in the Gqeberha magistrate's court on Monday.

Rape of 11-year-old: Closing arguments presented in bail hearing
The bail hearing of a 28-year-old man accused of raping and impregnating an 11-year-old Boksburg girl was again postponed at the Boksburg Magistrate's Court yesterday (June 9). The matter will resume on June 12. This follows the defence and the State presenting their closing arguments for the bail application. The accused's lawyer, Frik van Rensburg, said the investigating officer's statement contains no supporting evidence and should not be relied upon. He pointed out that the child initially denied the alleged rape when questioned by her mother, raising the question of how the court could then accept her version of events. ALSO READ: State opposes bail as officer testifies in child rape case 'The prompting of the victim could, with all due respect, be indicative of an ulterior motive,' he said. Van Rensburg said the child was only assisted by her mother when the statement was taken — in English, not her mother tongue. State prosecutor Kagiso Ralethata argued that the State's case is not weak. 'The only thing outstanding is the DNA results, which could take about nine months. The victim was assessed by a doctor and no independent evidence was handed in to show that the applicant would be acquitted,' he said. 'The contentious point was the circumstantial evidence in the form of a statement from the victim's sister. 'It was highlighted that the witness is out of the country and that the investigating officer has not yet obtained her statement. 'We cannot say whether we will be able to obtain the statement. I will argue that, although the statement is important to a certain degree, it is not a crucial piece of evidence. The State can proceed without it.' The suspect, who cannot be named to protect the child complainant, was arrested on April 22. Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said Motherwell police attended to a complaint in the Shukushukuma area at about 6.30pm on Thursday. 'On arrival they were informed by a witness that while passing a house, he noticed the female suspect assaulting her three-year-old son with an empty bottle,' Janse van Rensburg said. 'The witness entered the house to intervene and managed to stop the woman and alerted the police. 'The boy was taken to hospital by family and had visible injuries to his head and face. 'The female suspect was arrested on charges of attempted murder and child abuse.' Janse van Rensburg said the 35-year-old woman would appear in the Motherwell magistrate's court on Monday. Huggers target students in Hatfield
A TikTok video released by the Hatfield Community Intervention Desk (CID) has sparked concern among students after it warned of a new trend where criminals are stealing phones by hugging unsuspecting victims. This comes after another video circulated on social media, showing a man embracing a young woman at a fast food outlet in Hatfield, only to slip her phone out of her possession during the hug. INCIDENT CAUGHT ON CCTV IN HATFIELD PRETORIA Please assist us in identifying the suspect seen on the video stealing a cellphone. — CrimeInSA (@sa_crime) May 14, 2025 CID Hatfield head of security, Deon van Rensburg, confirmed a spike in incidents involving students, particularly around clubs, restaurants, and other night-time hotspots. 'Criminals are now using hugs as a distraction technique,' he said. 'When you're hugged by a stranger, make sure to keep your valuables safe – especially your phone, watch and wallet.' Van Rensburg added that offenders often linger outside fast food joints and nightlife venues, waiting for the right moment to strike. He urged students and young adults to avoid physical contact with strangers and report any suspicious behaviour immediately. Hatfield, known for its dense student population due to its proximity to the University of Pretoria, falls under the jurisdiction of the Brooklyn police precinct. The station is currently grappling with high crime rates. According to the latest crime statistics for the fourth quarter of the 2024/25 financial year, released by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on May 23, Brooklyn remains one of the country's worst-hit areas for several categories of crime. The precinct, which covers 28 suburbs including Hatfield, Brooklyn, Lynnwood North, Hazelwood, Menlo Park, and Waterkloof, was ranked: – 5th nationally for property-related crimes – 6th for commercial crimes – 8th for common robbery – 9th for serious crime overall – 10th for 'theft not otherwise specified' – 20th for non-residential burglaries – 23rd for the overall category of community-reported crimes. While the national report noted a slight dip in motor vehicle and motorcycle thefts during the last quarter, Brooklyn continues to lead the country in these categories. The area's crime complexity is amplified by its mix of high-density student residences, shopping centres, sporting venues, bars, and academic institutions, all creating opportunities for opportunistic criminals. Residents and students are advised to remain alert, especially when moving through busy areas or socialising in public spaces. Do you have more information about the story?
