India and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) star spinner Varun Chakaravarthy turned finisher for his Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) team Dindigul Dragons to beat Salem Spartans by two wickets at the Chennai Super Kings ground on Sunday evening.
The Dragons needed eight runs off the last two balls against medium-pacer M Poiyamozhi. The penultimate ball was a no-ball, and Chakaravarthy smoked the free-hit for a six over long-on, going across his off-stump to flick it high in the air. With one run needed, the fielders closed in for the last ball, and the batter played a smart, well-timed lofted shot to clear mid-off for a four down the ground.

Chakaravarthy's former Tamil Nadu and KKR captain Dinesh Karthik was all praise for him.
'Amazing .. Well done Varun. All the hard work you have put in is showing 👏👏👏," he wrote on X.
The spinner's childhood coaches have previously confirmed that he has been working on his batting since being dropped from India's T20 side after 2021. In 2024, KKR's then batting coach Abhishek Nayar, has also revealed that the national selectors had asked the spinner to work on his batting and fielding skills.
Chakaravarthy, among the best bowlers of the past two seasons, made his way back to the T20 team earlier this year and has become an integral part of the spin attack under Gautam Gambhir's coaching.
Coming back to the match, the Spartans scored 188/7 in the first innings. Nidhish Rajagopal was the top run-getter with 74 (47) to his name. For the Dragons, the spin duo of skipper Ravichandran Ashwin and Chakaravarthy shone with the ball. While Ashwin took three scalps, including Rajagopal's, Chakaravarthy got rid of skipper S Abishiek.
Ashwin led the charge in the chase, too, smashing a quick 14-ball 36 as the opener. The Dragons didn't find a single anchor to take them through but were helped by several small cameos, finished by Chakaravarthy's cherry-on-the-cake unbeaten 13 (5) that sealed the narrow last-ball win.

Key is to keep fast bowlers fit through the year: Kumaran

For more than a decade, former India pacer T. Kumaran has been in the United States, building an extensive coaching resume that includes stints with the USA senior and under-19 teams, as well as training kids. Now, the 49-year-old is back to his roots in Tamil Nadu and was appointed as the senior team's bowling coach last month. 'I am excited to be back in TN. I have worked closely with Robin Singh (currently a TNCA Consultant) in USA cricket, and when he broached this idea, I was happy at the chance to be a part of a professional set-up,' said Kumaran about his new role. 'I have always dreamed of winning the Ranji Trophy, but during my playing days, we only reached the semifinals. Now, as a coach, I hope to help TN achieve that.' Over the last fortnight, Kumaran has been closely watching the players in the ongoing TNPL in preparation for the upcoming season and is pleased by the fast bowling stock he has seen so far. 'One thing that has stood out so far is that the quicks are fitter and taller than what we used to have during my time. I have been observing how they are bowling in different situations and conditions. At the same time, I also want to see how they fare in the TNCA first division because that will be crucial and whether they can bowl long spells.' Explaining what his focus areas will be, he said: 'The main thing is to keep the fast bowlers fit through the year with emphasis on good recovery and workload management. Running fitness is a key to that. We also need to have a good bench strength, which is important to win the Ranji Trophy.' Kumaran, who played eight ODIs for India (1999-2000), said: 'I did not have a long international career. Now, I want to share my knowledge with these boys and develop them so that they can have that. We have had an R. Ashwin, who took more than 500 Test wickets, and I want to develop more cricketers like him.'

R Ashwin stunned into silence in dugout after Varun Chakaravarthy cracks 10 runs in 2 balls in nerve-wracking TNPL chase

India bowler Varun Chakaravarthy is more known for his exploits with the ball, having earned the tag 'mystery' spinner over the course of his career, which even saw him break into the national side. More recently, he was part of the title-winning Champions Trophy squad, where he was the second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament, picking up 9 wickets in just three matches. Varun Chakaravarthy smashed 10 runs in the last two balls However, on Sunday, Varun showed a different side to his cricketing prowess, helping Dindigul Dragons seal a last-ball win with the bat against SKM Salem Spartans in the ongoing Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL). Varun held his nerves in the thrilling chase, smashing 10 runs in the last two balls as the Dragons secured a two-wicket victory. Chasing 189 runs at the Indian Cement Company Ground in Tirunelveli, Dindigul Dragons needed 11 runs to win in the last over. However, M Poiyamozhi kept Salem ahead in the contest as he dismissed M Karthik Saran on the second ball of the over, as he conceded just three runs in the first four balls. However, an unfortunate no-ball from the bowler changed the momentum. Varun launched the penultimate ball for a six over long-on, before clobbering the final one for a boundary past the infield as he sparked a euphoric celebration in the Dragons' dugout. But captain Ravichandran Ashwin was stunned into silence. Head down, hands over it, even as players celebrated around him — and then, he looked up and smiled in disbelief. Earlier in the match, Ashwin gave his side a fiery start to the chase as he clobbered 35 runs in just 14 balls, comprising five boundaries and two sixes as the Dragons scored 50 runs in the first 20 balls without any loss. Subsequent batters - Shivam Singh (34 off 24), R K Jayant (25 off 15), Hunny Saini (35 off 28) and Vimal Khumar - all chipped in with handy cameos as the defending champions secured their third win in the tournament thus far. The former India cricketer also delivered with the ball, picking three wickets for just 22 runs in four overs. Dindigul now stand third in the table with six points from five matches, behind top-placed Chepauk Super Gillies, who have already qualified for the playoffs, and IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans, who have the same points as Ashwin's side, only separated by a higher net run rate. The Dragons have two more matches to play in the league stage. They next face Nellai Royal Kings in Tirunelveli on June 26, followed by Trichy Grand Cholas at home on June 29. The playoffs will begin on July 1 and the reigning champions need to win both games to secure a place in the next round.

He claimed his first wicket in the opening over and later dismissed Sunny Sandhu (25 off 14 balls) and Rajendra Vivek (35 off 20 balls).
