Gulf markets hold steady despite US entry into Israel-Iran war
Gulf stock markets held steady on Sunday after the US struck three nuclear sites in Iran in overnight attacks, escalating the Israel-Iran war that threatens to disrupt energy supplies from the oil-rich region. Saudi Arabia's Tadawul gave up early gains and its main index ended traded 0.34 per cent lower. Qatar's main index closed up 0.19 per cent, while the main market in Kuwait ended the session 1.81 per cent higher on Sunday. Bahrain's bourse closed up 0.27 per cent, while the main index on the Muscat bourse reversed early losses to end 0.42 per cent higher. "Markets are focused on whether the war spreads to other countries and there is no evidence of that as yet," Hasnain Malik, head of emerging and frontier market investment strategy at Tellimer, told The National. "The benign interpretation is that the US intervention will accelerate the end of the war. That, of course, remains to be seen." Investor attention is now centred on the risk of Iranian retaliation, particularly towards US assets, regional energy infrastructure, and maritime routes like the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, Iridium Advisor said in a note on Sunday morning. " GCC investor sentiment will be shaped by rising geopolitical risk following US air strikes on Iranian nuclear sites," it said. "While broad financial disruption appears unlikely, markets will monitor liquidity conditions. For now, the market impact will hinge more on the nature and timing of Tehran's response than the strikes themselves." Meanwhile, the Tel Aviv stock market also gained on Sunday, with the TA-125 index up 0.98 per cent and TA-35 up 0.75. The US military bombed three nuclear sites in Iran, President Donald Trump said on Saturday night, calling the attacks a "spectacular military success". "Iran's key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated," he said. He also warned of the possibility of further attacks, saying there were "many targets left". "Iran, the bully of the Middle East, must now make peace. If they do not, future attacks will be far greater and a lot easier." Iran retaliated on Sunday morning with about 25 missiles, authorities said. The war, which began on June 13 following air strikes by Israel on Tehran, has rattled investors. The UAE markets ended higher last week, with the Dubai Financial Market up 1.5 per cent at the close of session and the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange gaining 0.95 per cent at market close. Global stocks ended last week on a mixed note, with both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq composite ending the session on Friday lower, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed slightly higher. In Europe, London's FTSE 100 closed 0.2 per cent lower, while Paris' CAC 40 gained 0.5 per cent. Frankfurt's DAX was up 1.3 per cent. In Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index edged 1.3 per cent higher and Shanghai's composite was down 0.07 per cent, with Japan's Nikkei down 0.2 per cent.

In 2024, seven members advanced to the final stages of the District Toastmasters Annual Conference (DTAC), representing Bahrain in a regional competition that included participants from Kuwait, Iraq, and Egypt. This year, five members have represented the club at DTAC, which was hosted in Bahrain in May 2025. As part of the celebration, INJAZ Bahrain also announced the winners of the Toastmasters of the Year Awards. Abdelrahman Nasser was honored with 1st Place, followed by Abdulla Madan in 2nd Place, and Malak Almeel in 3rd Place. These individuals were recognized for their outstanding contributions, consistent growth, and leadership within the Toastmasters community. Beyond competitions, the club's members have extended their impact through meaningful community engagement. They have delivered the Youth Leadership Program at Busaiteen Secondary Girls School, offering public speaking workshops to students participating in the INJAZ Bahrain Company Program, and collaborating with Bapco Refining Toastmasters Club. From leading a public speaking masterclass at the JA Global Alumni Summit in Porto to serving as master of ceremonies at a high-level UN conference in Tunis, the club's members have proven their ability to inspire change on local, regional and global stages. Dr. Jawahery reiterated Bapco Energies Group's commitment to continue supporting purposeful national initiatives implemented by INJAZ Bahrain and other entities. INJAZ Bahrain Toastmasters Club remains the only Toastmasters Club in Bahrain dedicated specifically to Generation Z youth. It has consistently been recognized as a top-performing club among more than 100 others in the region according to Toastmasters International's performance indicators. From trophy counts that have surged from 17 in 2023 to 50 in 2025, to its members' leadership roles across clubs in Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, and Egypt, the momentum is unmistakable. This expansion comes as INJAZ Bahrain celebrates 20 years of impact since its inception in 2005 as part of Junior Achievement Worldwide. Over the past two decades, the organization has reached more than 1,000,000 students with the support of over 22,000 volunteers, implementing 28 programs that champion financial literacy, work readiness, entrepreneurship, and digital literacy across more than 290 schools and 15 universities in the Kingdom. With strong leadership under Chairperson H.H. Shaikha Hessa bint Khalifa Al Khalifa and the dedication of its board and partners, INJAZ Bahrain continues to shape a brighter future for the youth of Bahrain—one voice, one leader, one club at a time.

Bahrain issues public guidance following US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites
Bahrain, home to the US Central Command's regional base, issued public safety guidance on Sunday in the wake of American strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. The Gulf nation is strategically close to Iran. It hosts US personnel and military officials and established ties with Israel several years ago. "In light of recent developments in the regional security situation, we urge citizens and residents to use main roads only when necessary, to maintain public safety and to allow the relevant authorities to use the roads efficiently," an Interior Ministry statement read. Manama also said 70 per cent of government employees, including those in ministries and government agencies, will work from home, starting immediately, following the US attacks. Emergency staff are excluded from the order, Bahrain's Civil Service Bureau said. "A remote working system will be activated across ministries and government agencies, with a 70 per cent work-from-home capacity," the official Bahrain News Agency said after the US bombed Iran. Nearly 9,000 defence personnel are stationed in Bahrain, including military and civilian staff. The US Navy's Fifth Fleet provides security to ships and aircraft in the region. Kuwait emergency plan In a similar development, the Kuwaiti Finance Ministry said on Sunday it has activated its emergency plan to ensure the continuity of financial and service operations with high efficiency. The measures included preparing shelters in the building of the ministries' complex, which will accommodate about 900 people, and providing warehouses to be used when necessary. Kuwait hosts a major American military base, Camp Arifjan, which is south-east of the capital, Kuwait city. It was established in 1999 and provides primary logistics for US military operations across the region. Iran has previously threatened to target US military bases in the region if Washington intervened on Israel's side. Bahrain and other Gulf states also lie near Iran's Bushehr nuclear reactor, which has reportedly been the target of Israeli strikes. Their proximity, just across the narrow waters of the Gulf, has raised regional security concerns, especially amid fears of radioactive fallout or wider escalation.
