I'm going on a European vacation this summer — here's 10 essential items I'm packing
I have a long-awaited (and long-needed) summer vacation coming up, where I'll be traveling overseas. I don't want to pack too much — got to save room for souvenirs — but being the techie that I am, I can't resist bringing along a few gadgets and some gear.
From chargers and smart glasses to apparel and headphones, here are the 10 things I'm packing for my summer trip.
Oh, and if you can wait, I recommend holding off until Prime Day, as many of these items are likely to go on sale.
As part of my trip involves an overnight overseas flight, I put a premium on noise-cancellation over other features, and Bose's QuietComfort Ultra headphones are the best at what they do. I just want to strap them on my head, put on some movie I may have missed in the theaters, and tune out everything while I'm winging away. While the Bose aren't our favorite headphones overall — their battery life could be longer — we did rate them the best for noise-cancellation, which is my number one priority.
The Bose QC Ultra are at the top of our list of the best noise-cancelling headphones. They're simply the best at blocking out noise, and they're exceedingly comfortable to wear. They're also available in a variety of colors. I suggest waiting for Prime Day to buy these, when they're likely to go on sale.
I'm bringing these open-ear earbuds with me for one specific reason: Anker has added free live AI translation to these buds, and it can interpret more than 100 languages. While I can reasonably get by in France, Italy, and to some degree Spain, Portuguese is like Greek to me.What's nice about Anker's buds is that, when used with the app, they can also translate English to Portuguese, so I can make myself understood as well. Because of their open-ear design, they feel a bit different than the best wireless earbuds. They're not as comfortable to wear when you have sunglasses — but their small charging case means I can keep them tucked in my pocket for when I need them.
The Soundcore Aerofit 2 open-ear headphones feature 20mm × 11.5mm racetrack drivers, up to 10 hours of battery life plus an additional 42 hours in the case. They can translate more than 100 languages, and come in four colors.
As I'll be traveling to a foreign country, I was really interested to see how the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses would work as an interpreter. They can translate English, Spanish, French, and Italian — which unfortunately won't come in handy where I'm going. But, the shades have more functions than that. While their cameras aren't the highest quality, I do like that I can simply ask them to take a photo or video without having to pull my phone out of my pocket.
The Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses are far more than just a pair of specs with a camera. Meta AI features give them all the smarts to answer any questions about the world around you. All of this is underpinned by a stellar-looking set of specs that feel great to wear all-day round. Plus, boasting water resistance always helps. Multiple styles are available from $299.
If I'm bringing the Meta Ray Bans, then why am I bringing a second pair of sunglasses? I've been using the Smith Lowdowns for more than a year, and I absolutely love their ChromaPop lenses, which make colors — especially reds — really stand out. It's like someone turned on the Vivid setting in your eyes.
You can get these shades in a variety of colors and finishes, and for this year, the company also launched a pair with photochromatic lenses, so that they'll automatically darken in sunlight. After wearing these, everything else just looks dull.
The Smith Lowdown 2 sunglasses are available in a variety of frames and lenses, and come in three sizes (look for Lowdown Slim and Lowdown XL if you have a smaller or larger head).
You never know when it's going to rain, but neither do you want to pack a bulky jacket that you might not use. Outdoor Research's jacket fits the bill for me. It packs down really small, and is also very light and breathable, so I don't feel icky and sweaty if I get caught in one of those really humid summer rainstorms. I got mine in green, but it's available in a variety of colors and sizes.
The Stratoburst rain jacket is made of 100% recycled materials, weighs just 8.47 ounces, has an adjustable hood, zippered vents under the arms, and can be packed into its left-hand pocket.
It's always important to pack a pair of long pants, even if you're going to a hot climate; you never know when you'll need a pair to go out to a formal dinner, or if you're visiting a holy site that requires you to cover your legs. There's no way I'm bringing a pair of jeans — they're much too heavy — but these Stio Vallis pants are super light and breathable, and pack down into almost nothing. Plus, they have a bunch of pockets, and come in four colors. They're so comfortable, they're the pants I'm planning to wear on the plane.
The Stio Vallis pants are made of 4-way stretch fabric that resists wrinkles and creases, and has a PFAS-free water-resistant finish. The pants have zippered back pockets, weigh 10.6 ounces, and come in blue, green, gray, and coral.
One of the issues when travelling with tech means carrying a lot of cables. The standardization to USB-C is helping, but I still have a variety of cords for my older iPhone, as well as backup 3.5mm audio for my headphones — not to mention my various chargers.
Thule makes a few small travel pouches that make it easy to organize and store all your cables, so they're within easy reach if you're crammed in an airline seat. The Thule Aion is about twice as expensive as the company's other bags, but it includes a detachable RFID-blocking 2-in-1 pouch for your passport and other documents.
Thule's Aio travel organizer is made of 100% recycled waxed canvas, has three small mesh compartments, a zippered pouch, and a removable RFID-safe pouch for all your documents.
I try to avoid checking bags wherever I go, but even for my carry-on suitcase, an Airtag is essential if I have to gate-check a bag, or worse, if it gets lost or stolen. Because I have an iPhone, the AirTags are the best keyfinders for my use case, but others might want to check out the Tile Mate or Samsung Galaxy SmartTag 2.
Save $25 on a 4 pack of Apple's AirTag trackers in this early Prime Day deal. Once you have them, it hopefully means you won't be losing track of your keys, wallet or luggage anytime soon.
I'm lucky enough that the place I'm heading to for vacation has a private pool for me and my family, and the UE Miniroll Bluetooth speaker is just what we need for some water-side tunes. I like that it's compact and waterproof, yet it delivers really good sound for its size, and lasts a while on a charge. It's one of the best Bluetooth speakers around.
The Miniroll is the ultimate musical companion. It's a super small Bluetooth speaker, so it'll fit into a backpack without a problem. It's sturdy too, which will let it survive even the most traumatic of outdoor mishaps. The small but mighty device is a great deal at its original price, but if you can, wait until Prime Day to see if it goes on sale.
As I'll be out touring the sites, taking lots of pictures, and probably using navigation on my iPhone, I know battery life is going to take a hit. Since I don't want to be without a charge, I'm also bringing along the Anker 633 Magnetic battery. It has a capacity of 10,000 mAh, so it should easily keep my iPhone topped off. I also like that it has a small kickstand, so I can keep my phone propped up while charging.
The Anker 633 has a 10,000 mAh battery with a 20W USB-C port, as well as a Magsafe-compatible dock that will work with the iPhone 16/15/14/13/12 series. It's available in black, blue, or white.

Amazon Prime Day 2025: The best early deals you can shop now, dates and everything else you need to know
Amazon Prime Day 2025 will be here soon on July 8-11, but as to be expected, you can already find some decent sales available now. Amazon always has lead-up sales in the days and weeks before Prime Day, and it's wise to shop early if you're on the hunt for something specific and you see that item at a good discount. Prime Day deals are typically reserved for subscribers, but there are always a few that anyone can shop. We expect this year to be no exception, and we're already starting to see that trend in these early Prime Day deals. These are the best Prime Day deals you can get right now ahead of the event, and we'll update this post with the latest offers as we get closer to the official days of Prime Day. Audible Premium Plus (three months) for $3 ($42 off): New subscribers can get three months of Audible for only $3, which represents a $42 discount. The Premium Plus tier gives you one book credit per month to use on any audiobook the service has, and you can stream any of the included titles for free on top of that. Audible also has members-only sales and discounts that you'll be able to take advantage of, too. The deal runs through July 31. Anker 313 wireless charging stand for $14 (29 percent off): One of our top picks for the best wireless chargers, Anker's 313 stand keeps things simple but effective. Just plop your phone down on its wide stand to get up to 10W of fast-charging power. It supports both portrait and landscape orientation for your phone, and it'll work with cases up to 5mm thick. 8BitDo Micro Bluetooth gamepad for $17 (33 percent off): This cute controller works with Switch, Android and Raspberry Pi devices, and it has 16 buttons that can be customized with mapping using 8BitDo's mobile software. Samsung SmartTag 2 for $18.50 (38 percent off): Samsung users looking to keep track of their stuff need look no further than the SmartTag 2. One of our top picks for the best Bluetooth trackers, this accessory easily attaches to keys, bags and other items and uses Samsung's large finding network to show you their last known location. Anker 633 10K magnetic battery pack for $43 (28 percent off, Prime exclusive): This 10K battery pack attaches magnetically to the backs of iPhones, making it easy to recharge while on the go. It also has a built-in kickstand for easy video watching or FaceTime calling while powering up. Soundcore Space A40 wireless earbuds for $45 (44 percent off): The Space A40 are some of the best budget wireless earbuds you can get right now, thanks to excellent ANC performance for their price, a pleasant sound profile, a comfortable fit and multi-device connectivity. They also have a solid eight-hour battery life, plus an extra 40 with their charging case. Apple AirPods 4 for $99 at Amazon ($30 off): Apple's wireless earbuds don't have the best sound quality or battery life, and this entry-level model lacks wireless charging, Find My tracking and onboard volume controls. But it still gets you tons of Apple-friendly features — from fast pairing with iCloud devices to spatial audio to hands-free Siri — and its lightweight design should fit most ears better than previous AirPods. Apple iPad (A16) for $299 at Amazon ($50 off): The latest base model iPad comes with a faster A16 chip, 2GB more RAM and 128GB of storage as standard. It earned a score of 84 in our review — if you only need an iPad for roaming the internet, watching shows and doing some lighter productivity tasks, it's a good starter tablet. Apple Mac Mini M4 for $469 ($130 off): If you prefer desktops, the upgraded M4 Mac mini is one that won't take up too much space, but will provide a ton of power at the same time. Not only does it come with an M4 chipset, but it also includes 16GB of RAM in the base model, plus front-facing USB-C and headphone ports for easier access. Apple Watch Series 10 for $329 ($70 off): We consider Apple's flagship wearable to be the best smartwatch you can buy, period. It's a mostly iterative update, with faster charging, a slightly slimmer design and a marginally larger display than the prior Series 9. That said, it's still a comprehensive fitness tracker, and no other smartwatch can integrate as neatly with iPhones and other Apple devices. Ring Doorbell Battery + Indoor Cam 2 for $70 (50 percent off): If you're looking to build out a security system in your home, this bundle is a good place to start, giving you a video doorbell and an indoor security camera. You'll be able to see both live feeds in the Ring app, and they can send you motion alerts and let you speak to people on the other end of the camera when you're not at home. Anker MagGo 3-in-1 charging station for $82 (25 percent off): A top pick in our guide to the best multi-device wireless chargers, this Anker power station can charge a phone, pair of earbuds and smartwatch all at once. It's primarily built for Apple devices, with a built-in Apple Watch charger and a neat space for AirPods. It's a solid option for frequent travelers thanks to the fact that it folds up to roughly the size of a deck of cards when not in use. Levoit LVAC-200 cordless vacuum cleaner for $150 (25 percent off): One of our top picks for the best cordless vacuums, this Levoit machine picks up a good amount of dirt, debris and pet hair considering its size and cost. It's pretty lightweight and has a convenient single-button start, plus it can be quickly disassembled for easy storage. Blink Outdoor 4 security cameras (five-camera system) for $160 (60 percent off): Get enough security cameras to outfit most of your home with this bundle. The Outdoor 4 cams are some of our favorites; you can use them indoors or outdoors, they supports 1080p video, motion alerts, local video storage when you employ a thumb drive with the Sync Module 2 that comes with the pack and they're totally wireless, running on two AA batteries each. Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 for $200 ($50 off): The latest Powerbeats Pro earbuds have a comfier design and powerful bass performance that's sure to keep you hyped during a workout. These are Apple's first wireless earbuds with built-in heart rate monitoring, too, but that will likely only appeal to those who intend on using these buds primarily while working out. GoPro Hero 13 Black action camera for $329 ($100 off): Our favorite action camera for most people, the Hero 13 Black now works with a family of module lenses, making it even more versatile than models that came before it, plus it has a larger battery that supports longer capture times. On top of that, it has good digital stabilization, a full-color screen and excellent image quality. Eufy E20 3-in-1 robot vacuum for $380 (42 percent off): One of Eufy's latest machines and a top pick of ours for the best robot vacuums, the E20 can putter around your home automatically, sucking up dirt and debris in its path. But then it can quickly transform into a cordless or handheld vacuum, allowing you to clean hard-to-reach spots manually. Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones + $30 Amazon gift card for $448 ($30 off): Sony's newest pair of premium cans just came out not too long ago, and they promptly took the top spot in our best wireless headphones guide. The company managed to improve sound quality and ANC this time around, plus they have an even comfier design and loads of extra features like multi-device connectivity, Speak-to-Chat and more. LG 42-inch C4 evo OLED smart TV for $700 (20 percent off): This 2024 OLED TV has over eight million self-lit pixels, a 144Hz refresh rate and support for NVIDIA G-Sync, AMD FreeSync Premium and VRR for gaming. It's powered by LG's a9 AI processor Gen7, and it has Alexa built in as well. Prime Day is Amazon's members-only shopping event, which means you'll have to be a Prime subscriber on Prime Day to take advantage of most of the savings. Amazon still offers a 30-day free trial to new Prime subscribers, so you can start your free trial closer to July and participate in the event. Amazon Prime Day 2025 will be back this year on July 8 through July 11. Amazon Prime Day typically comes around annually in July. In the last few years, Amazon has also had its "Big Deal Days" in October, which is effectively a second Prime Day and the unofficial kickoff to the holiday shopping season. Prime subscribers can go to Amazon's site on Prime Day to see all of the exclusive deals they have access to. Prime subscribers do not have to do anything additional to get Prime Day sales: the discounts you see on product pages will show up in your cart automatically. If you're not a Prime subscriber and you go to Amazon to shop on Prime Day, you'll likely see tons of items on sale but only "with Prime;" those discounts will not be available to those who are not active Prime subscribers. Technically yes, but even if you do not pay for a Prime membership, you should still check out Amazon on Prime Day. While most Prime Day deals will be exclusively available to subscribers, there are always a handful of sales available to all shoppers. Amazon distinguishes between them very clearly: you'll see "Prime exclusive" on product pages near the deal pricing on the discounts that are only available to paying members. Separately, it's very likely that other retailers like Walmart, Target and Best Buy will have their own competing Prime Day sales during that time frame, too. So if you're not keen on shopping at Amazon at all, it's worth checking out other retailers during the week of Prime Day to see if they are matching Prime Day deal prices.

See inside Coe Hall, a 65-room mansion built by a Gilded Age businessman who was booked on the Titanic's return voyage
The mansion, Coe Hall, was built by William Robertson Coe, an executive who succeeded in the insurance and railroad businesses, and his wife, Mai Rogers, an heiress to a fortune built on Standard Oil money. In fact, Coe was the president of the company that brokered the insurance for the hull of what was known as an unsinkable ship: the Titanic. He was even booked on the return voyage of the Titanic from New York City to England, per the Long Island Press. Coe Hall — the second mansion to be built on the property after the original from 1906 burned down in 1918 — looks like it was transplanted from the English countryside and dropped on the Gold Coast, a stretch of Long Island's North Shore that earned its nickname for the opulent estates built by wealthy families around the turn of the 20th century. That's on purpose, as they wanted to make it seem like the home had been there for decades, making them " old money." During my tour of the property this spring, a docent told me some architectural touches didn't match at the time of construction, as if to give the appearance that the home had been remodeled over the years. In addition to the main house, which was designed by the architectural firm Walker & Gillette, the arboretum is home to beautiful landscaping and gardens designed by the famous Olmsted Brothers, who also designed Central Park and Oheka Castle. Here's what it's like to visit one of the largest Gold Coast mansions left on Long Island. Down the other hallway were the kids' bedrooms. They were all closed, though, because Netflix filmed season three of "The Diplomat" at Coe Hall, and these rooms were used as storage. Coming back down the stairs, I got another look at just how intricate and intentional every detail in the house was. Now it was time to check out the much-revered grounds. Right off the bat, this fountain caught my eye. I also enjoyed this courtyard. The landscaping was by the Olmsted Brothers, who also designed Central Park and Oheka Castle. Near the house, there's a small pond and a bench off a hidden path. It's the perfect spot for quiet contemplation. But the main draws of the backyard are the Blue Pool Garden and the Tea House. Before the pool was here, this area was a tennis court. It took 16 workers to dig out 16,000 square yards of soil to build the sunken pool. At the end of the garden is the Tea House, which was built in 1906. The exterior makes the Tea House look like something out of a fairytale. Can't you just hear someone saying, "Once upon a time"? Rogers entertained her friends in the Tea House on nice days. It looks like the inside of a Tiffany's box. The other structure in this area of the park is the Playhouse, which was built so Natalie, the Coes' daughter, could have a place to play house. As we continued walking around the park, we came to this archway made of pine trees. Walking through it felt like walking through a storybook. On the other side of the archway is the Main Greenhouse, built in 1914. This was originally called the Hibiscus House, but now it's a mixture of tropical plants. One corner of the building was anchored by this giant palm tree. There were plenty of paths to walk down to get the full experience. We then walked the Azalea Walk, one of 13 trails at the Planting Fields. That led us to the other greenhouse on-site, the Camellia Greenhouse, built in 1917. It has the largest collection of camellias under glass in the northeast. However, camellia season is in January, so we missed it. But there were still plenty of flowers and plants to check out in this greenhouse. There are many more gardens to see at Coe Hall, including a rose garden, a hydrangea collection, and a dahlia garden. Walking around Planting Fields and Coe Hall felt like stepping back in time and revealed the remarkable wealth of Gilded Age families. Any history buff should pay it a visit, if they can.
