China evacuates 1,600 from Iran and hundreds from Israel, warns of border congestion
China has evacuated more than 1,600 citizens from Iran and hundreds more from Israel, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said on Thursday, as evacuees clog border crossings amid the intensifying conflict between the two countries.
Evacuation efforts are continuing and China has maintained communication with Iran, Israel, Egypt, and Oman, spokesperson Guo Jiakun told a regular press conference, while calling for immediate measures to cool down tensions as soon as possible.
China urges parties to the conflict, especially Israel, to immediately cease fire, Guo said.
Israel struck a key Iranian nuclear site on Thursday, and Iranian missiles hit an Israeli hospital, as the conflict showed no signs of a détente nearly a week after Israel first launched what it called 'pre-emptive strikes' against Iran.
The Chinese embassy in Iran renewed calls for citizens to leave the country via land routes, while also warning people about longer immigration processing times as congestion has formed at two border checkpoints—Astara heading into Azerbaijan and Bajgiran into Turkmenistan.
Those border crossing points are 490 kilometers (304 miles) and 910 kilometers away from Tehran, respectively.
Chinese people can also leave Iran via Turkey, Armenia, and Iraq, the embassy advised.
Earlier on Thursday, China's embassy in Israel said it will begin evacuating people in batches from Friday, taking those who want to leave to the Taba Border Crossing into Egypt via bus, about 360 kilometers from Tel Aviv.

Japan Hosts Coast Guard Drills With US and Philippines as Sea Tensions Rise
Japan's coast guard on Friday held a joint exercise with counterparts from the US and the Philippines as the three Pacific nations beef up defense cooperation in the face of China's expanding maritime activities. The exercise came after Japan confirmed that two Chinese aircraft carriers had operated together for the first time in the Pacific in June. Japan and China blamed each other after Tokyo complained that a Chinese fighter jet from one of the carriers flew dangerously close to Japanese reconnaissance aircraft. Friday's coast guard exercise just off Japan's southern prefecture of Kagoshima involved 350 personnel from the three countries and was based on a scenario of a collision between vessels at high seas, a fire, and crew members falling overboard. The three nations' leaders last year agreed to bolster maritime cooperation as they expressed concern over Beijing's military maneuvers in the region. Their first joint drills were held in the Philippines in 2023. 'The coast guard cooperation is part of an effort to secure a free and open Indo-Pacific by promoting mutual understanding and trust,' Japan coast guard commander Adm. Yoshio Seguchi told a news conference Wednesday. China routinely sends coast guard vessels, warships, and warplanes around disputed East China Sea islands and recently as far as Guam, a US Pacific territory with military bases. Beijing also sends coast guard vessels in the South China Sea, which it claims virtually in its entirety, clashing frequently with Philippine vessels.

Switzerland temporarily closes Iran embassy, UK withdraws embassy staff
Switzerland announced Friday the temporary closure of its embassy in Tehran, adding that it would continue to fulfil its role representing US interests in Iran. 'In view of the intensity of military operations in Iran and the highly unstable situation on the ground, the FDFA has decided to temporarily close the Swiss embassy in Tehran,' the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs said in a statement. Meanwhile, the UK said it had withdrawn its embassy staff from Iran on the eighth day of the war with Israel, as the US mulled whether to enter the conflict. 'Due to the current security situation, we have taken the precautionary measure to temporarily withdraw our UK staff from Iran. Our embassy continues to operate remotely,' the foreign ministry said in a statement.
