South Korea's LG Energy Solution pulls out of Indonesia EV battery investment

JAKARTA: South Korea's LG Energy Solution has formally withdrawn from a 142 trillion rupiah ($8.45 billion) project to develop electric vehicle battery making in Indonesia, the company said on Monday.
LGES and the Indonesian government signed a deal on the so-called Indonesia Grand Package project in late 2020, which includes investments across the EV battery supply chain in the Southeast Asian country.
'Taking into account various factors, including market conditions and investment environment, we have agreed to formally withdraw from the Indonesia GP (Grand Package) project,' LGES said in a statement.
'However, we will continue to explore various avenues of collaboration with the Indonesian government, centering on the Indonesia battery joint venture, HLI Green Power,' it added.
HLI Green Power, a joint venture led by LGES and Hyundai Motor Group, last year inaugurated Indonesia's first battery cell production plant with an annual capacity of 10 gigawatt hours. It has plans to expand the capacity in the second phase of investment.

Indonesia will continue to seek foreign investors to partner with local companies to develop the battery industry, leveraging the country's rich nickel reserves, said energy ministry official Tri Winarno.
'Even though LG has exited, Indonesia remains convinced our nickel is more competitive than other countries,' he told reporters.
Indonesian state-controlled miner Aneka Tambang, which had planned to form a JV with LGES to mine nickel, said it remained committed to work with other companies to supply nickel for battery production.
State firm Indonesia Battery Corporation, which had also planned to partner with LGES, did not respond to requests for comment.

Asia currencies: Thai baht hit by political turmoil

BENGALURU: The Thai baht weakened on Friday and was set for its biggest weekly drop in four months as political uncertainty weighed on already fragile sentiment, while other regional currencies were also headed for weekly losses on Middle East tensions. The baht fell 0.4% in its fifth session of losses and was on course to log its worst week since late February. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was facing the prospect of losing her government's majority as the United Thai Nation party, a vital coalition partner, looked set to demand her resignation after just 10 months in power. This follows the Bhumjaithai Party's withdrawal from the alliance after a leaked phone call with Cambodia's former leader. The political instability comes against the backdrop of persistent bond outflows driven by low returns and vulnerability to US trade tariffs and the government's call for a weaker baht to support exports and tourism. 'At a time when unprecedented geoeconomic challenges are confronting Thailand, the lack of political leadership/certainty is an unwelcome handicap for trade/diplomacy and wider geopolitical leverage,' said Vishnu Varathan, head of macro research for Asia excluding Japan at Mizuho Bank, in a note. 'The BoT (Bank of Thailand) arguably needs to compensate, hastening another 50-75bp of rate cuts,' he said, adding that the optimal policy mix for the central bank would be to cut rates while stabilizing the baht. Thai stocks rose 0.3%. Poon Panichpibool, markets strategist at Krung Thai Bank, attributed the rise to a combination of technical rebound and some investors buying stocks on a dip after Thursday's 2.4% fall. Other regional currencies inched up on the day but were set for weekly losses as investors weighed the possibility of US involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict. The Indonesian rupiah was on course for its worst weekly performance since early April, and the Philippine peso was poised for its biggest weekly drop since October. The South Korean won rose 0.8% on Friday but was set for its second consecutive weekly fall. Taiwan's dollar added 0.4%, a day after the country's central bank kept its policy rate unchanged and signalled there was no need for a rate cut this year. Meanwhile, the Hong Kong dollar hit the weak end of its trading band for the first time in two years.

Corridor linking Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan dry ports with Pakistan seaports proposed

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has suggested developing a trade corridor, linking Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan's dry ports with Pakistan's seaports via road and rail networks. During a meeting between Federal Minister Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry and the Ambassador of Uzbekistan, Alisher Tukhtaev, here on Thursday, various proposals to enhance mutual and regional cooperation were discussed. According to Pakistan's Maritime Minister this initiative, potentially unlocking over $20 billion in trade, would serve as a strategic artery for landlocked Central Asian economies, accelerating their access to the maritime domain. During the meeting both the delegations agreed to form a joint working group to deepening maritime cooperation, with a focus on unlocking the untapped potential of the blue economy, green shipping and creating a robust trans-regional trade architecture connecting Central Asia to the Arabian Sea. Furthermore, both sides emphasised the urgency of building sustainable maritime linkages to support shared economic growth, regional connectivity, and long-term prosperity through ocean-based industries. The meeting also discussed integrated logistics solutions bonded warehouses, multimodal transport systems, and smart port infrastructure as enablers of efficient cross-border trade. Synergy with the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) was recognised as vital for expanding Uzbekistan's reach to a $6 trillion regional market. Chaudhry stressed the importance of integrating Uzbekistan into maritime ecosystem through ports like Gwadar and Karachi offering cost-effective and efficient access to global markets. 'Uzbekistan can invest in improving road infrastructure and connectivity to Gwadar port underlining its commercial viability and alignment with global sustainability goals,' the minister suggested. The both sides explored avenues for joint ventures in key blue economy sectors, including marine fisheries, aquaculture, seafood processing, and coastal tourism, all poised to generate high returns in Gulf, African, and Southeast Asian markets. Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry extended an invitation to Uzbekistan to invest in Pakistan's port-based industries, shipbuilding, and renewable ocean energy initiatives. This engagement marks a significant step forward in Pakistan-Uzbekistan relations, laying the groundwork for a long-term maritime partnership rooted in blue economy collaboration, innovation, and regional integration. Responding to the minister's proposal, both sides agreed to convene fast-track consultative meetings involving technical experts. These sessions will identify Uzbekistan's specific maritime needs and determine Pakistan's potential offerings to support them. Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry further proposed a trilateral collaboration between Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Pakistan to enhance overland connectivity to Gwadar Port positioning it as a key gateway for Central Asian states through integrated road and rail networks. Uzbekistan's Ambassador Alisher Tukhtaev expressed strong interest in launching joint ventures in the seafood sector, particularly in fisheries production. He also suggested the allocation of an off-dock terminal dedicated to Uzbek trade operations in Pakistan. The ambassador informed the minister that a delegation of Uzbek business leaders would soon visit Karachi to inspect port infrastructure and operations especially those related to the Marine Fisheries Department as part of efforts to deepen commercial cooperation.
