Joao Felix becomes second Chelsea star stripped of squad number in clear message

Daily Mirror12-06-2025

Portugal international Joao Felix has struggled to find a club to call home in the past few years, and he would appear to be on the move again after his squad number was taken away
Joao Felix's second spell at Chelsea seems destined for an inauspicious ending after the Portugal international saw his squad number given to new arrival Dario Essugo.
Felix, still just 25, joined Chelsea from Atletico Madrid last summer in a deal worth an initial £42million, but after 20 appearances in all competitions he was on the move again, joining AC Milan on loan for the remainder of the season in February.

Now back at Chelsea, where he first arrived on loan from Atletico for the second half of the 2022-23 season, there would appear to be little prospect of Felix forcing his way into Enzo Maresca's first-team plans for next season after he saw his No.14 shirt handed to his Portuguese compatriot Essugo.

The move is the latest twist in Felix's career, with the attacker seemingly destined for his fifth change of clubs in the last two-and-a-half years.
Felix has become the second Chelsea player to see their shirt number taken from them this summer after winger Mykhailo Mudryk's No.10 was handed to talisman Cole Palmer, who vacates the No.20.
Mudryk remains provisionally suspended from football for alleged doping, and hasn't kicked a ball for Chelsea since November.
Essugo has arrived at Chelsea in an £18.5million deal and will go into the squad for this summer's Club World Cup. The Portugal under-21 international played 25 times for Sporting's youth team, and had loan spells as Portuguese side Chaves and La Liga outfit Las Palmas in the past two seasons.
'It's a big step to make in my early career,' said Essugo as he was unveiled by the Blues. 'Every player dreams of getting to a big club, and Chelsea is no exception. It's a massive club and I'm feeling proud and very happy to be here.

'Chelsea showed big interest in me. When that happens, you can't turn it down. When my Dad told me Chelsea were interested, I was very happy and here we are now.'
Mamadou Sarr, another of Chelsea's new arrivals, has taken the No.19 shirt that was worn by Jadon Sancho during the past season, with the Englishman's loan spell from Manchester United having now ended.

"I feel really good, it's like a dream for me," Sarr said after his move. "Since I was young, I dreamed of playing for a club like this. Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in the world and I am very happy.
"For me, Chelsea is the best club in London, one of the best clubs in England. Chelsea have a good project in place for young players. The supporters, the club, it's history and the stadium are all fantastic. It's an iconic club with a full history."

Ollie Pope doubts Harry Brook has regrets after missing out on hometown hundred

Ollie Pope doubts Harry Brook will have any regrets about his dismissal after the Yorkshireman fell one run short of a hometown hundred in the first Rothesay Test against India. With Pope at the other end, Brook dispatched Prasidh Krishna into the stands from the first over of day three, while he then stepped out of his crease and thumped top-ranked Test bowler Jasprit Bumrah through the covers for four. Dropped on 46 and 82, he was on the cusp of a ninth century in just his 26th Test but with the Headingley crowd on red-alert, Brook pulled Krishna to Shardul Thakur in the deep, unable to follow Pope to three figures. But Pope suspects Brook will focus more on helping to lift the hosts to 465 and within six of India, who closed 96 ahead on 90 for two, rather than his downfall, the 16th time an Englishman has been out for 99 in a Test. Oh, Harry Brook 😭 An incredible knock ends just short of 100 🙈 — England Cricket (@englandcricket) June 22, 2025 'He was pretty gutted to get out,' said Pope. 'I think he'd either like to keep it down or hit it for six next time; he was as frustrated as anyone to get out but he plays that shot pretty well. 'It was an unbelievable knock. Even the pull shot he hit in the first over of the day, I was like 'where did that come from?'. 'Everyone knows what a fantastic player Harry is and to be able to put a guy like Jasprit Bumrah off his pace a little bit with a shot like that early on shows the confidence he has in his game. 'His ability to flip a game – if he batted for another hour, we could have been in an amazing position, it shows the skill and power he has.' Brook might have been dismissed the previous evening for a duck after being caught off Bumrah, who also drew the edge of the England batter when he was on 82 only for Yashasvi Jaiswal to spill in the cordon. An intense Day 3 duel leaves the series opener finely balanced in Leeds 💥 #ENGvIND — ICC (@ICC) June 22, 2025 'I think fate had decided on 99 for him, because he got dropped a few times after (the no-ball) as well,' said Bumrah, by far the best bowler on show as he collected five for 83. 'But that is not to take away from him. He assessed the conditions well, he fancies his game and plays an aggressive style of cricket. 'He makes you think he can play an aggressive shot but he can shut up shop as well. Full credit, he played really well and we'll try to have better plans in the next innings.' Pope was dismissed in the third over of the day for 106, adding just six to his overnight total, having shut down speculation about his position in the side with a majestic century on Saturday. Ollie Pope – 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣*Harry Brook – 0️⃣* We're underway at the start of a big morning session on Day 3 👇 — England Cricket (@englandcricket) June 22, 2025 England's vice-captain has appeared much calmer at the crease in recent months, with a frequent criticism the skittishness he displayed early on in his innings that brought about his downfall. 'Something I got better at even in the New Zealand series (before Christmas) is just trusting my game a little bit more, not feeling like I've got to rush to 30 to really feel in,' said Pope. 'It's trying to enjoy the process of building an innings rather than getting to 30 then make a big one.'

Conor Coady breaks Rangers transfer cover as Russell Martin now knows unseen benefit he will bring to Ibrox

The defender is high up on Martin and sporting director Kevin Thelwell's shopping list this summer Rangers target Conor Coady has broken his silence with a Leicester City exit gathering pace. Record Sport broke the story that the the Light Blues have asked the Foxes about his availability with Rangers sporting director Kevin Thelwell a huge fan of the England international after previously bringing him to Everton. The 32-year-old still has a year left on his contract at Leicester but after their relegation from the Premier League and uncertainty over Ruud van Nistelrooy's long-term future he faces a decision on his future. While Wolves are also said to be keen on Coady, he appears to have put a decision on his future on the back-burner to take on punditry duties for the Club World Cup. He was on hand for DAZN to break down Real Madrid's clash with Mexican giants CF Pachuca alongside Juan Pablo Angel and Luis Garcia. And he offered Russell Martin an insight on the tactical insight he could be getting if the Scottish Premiership giants can get a deal over the line. Coady also hinted at his love of attacking full-backs - a system often deployed by Martin - as gushed over Trent Alexander-Arnold. Asked if he preferred his defenders on the "under lap or over lap" he said: "I think someone like him can do both. "I think it is going to be really interesting, he likes to come inside Trent. I think developing the relationship with Arda Güler will be so important for Real Madrid this season. "It's really, really good for Real Madrid that they have got him going forward this season." Martin is looking to add to his squad in the coming days and has already lined up a loan move to sign Max Aarons from Bournemouth. New recruit Lyall Cameron is set to miss Rangers' return to pre-season - as exclusively revealed by Record Sport - while free agent Kwame Poku is also high up on the agenda after leaving Peterborough. Tommy Fleetwood makes disappointing start at Travelers Championship

The Englishman had opened up a three-shot lead following a flawless 63 on Saturday, sitting at 16-under par. Fleetwood, though, found the going tough when heading back out at TPC River Highlands looking to stay clear of the chasing pack – which included American Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley and Russell Henley. Tommy Fleetwood had a a stuttering start (Jessica Hill/AP) After starting with five before swiftly getting that shot back with a birdie, successive bogeys followed to see Fleetwood's advantage eaten away as Bradley had also made a three at the par-four second. Fleetwood, though, then got himself back clear at the top of the leaderboard after making a par five on the sixth, after which Bradley knocked in for a bogey to drop back to 13 under alongside Henley. The 34-year-old would be a popular winner, with Fleetwood having the most top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour since 1983 without claiming a title. Keegan drops a shot on the par-5 sixth. Fleetwood is once again our solo leader. — TravelersChamp (@TravelersChamp) June 22, 2025 World number one Scottie Scheffler looked to put his nightmare start to the fourth round behind him by soon climbing back up the leaderboard. Scheffler, who had been the overnight leader, made a triple bogey seven at the first hole on Saturday, when he was strangely out of sorts for most of the round, eventually finishing nine shots adrift of Fleetwood. The American, though, was soon back on the charge, this time making a solid birdie on the first and then picking up another with a two at the par-three eighth to head into the turn at two-under. Scottie Scheffler is looking to make up ground (Jessica Hill/AP) Masters champion Rory McIlroy had started the final day tied for eighth, in a group which included Scheffler. The Northern Irishman picked up two birdies in the opening six holes, having dropped a shot at the par-four fourth. Australian Jason Day moved to within two shots back of the co-leaders following five straight pars after his birdie on the first. Viktor Hovland, meanwhile, withdrew during his final round, on the third hole, because of a neck injury, the PGA Tour confirmed.
