Four rosé wines you've probably never tried before for under €20

Four rosé wines you've probably never tried before for under €20

Irish Times14-06-2025

While a small but growing group of wine drinkers enjoy rosé wines throughout the year, sales generally peak when the weather warms up and the sun comes out. There is something about a glass of chilled rosé that sings of summer, al-fresco lunches and dinners on the terrace. Provence was always known for its pale crisp dry rosé, but in recent years it has become hugely fashionable.
I tasted two of the biggest names in Provence rosé recently, Whispering Angel (about €20 a bottle) and Minuty M limited Edition (€24.50). Both were well-made, clean and refreshing with attractive delicate strawberry fruits; classic Provence rosé.
The demand for very pale-coloured rosés being as strong as ever, virtually every wine region around the world now produces its own version, some better than others. Personally I prefer mine to have a little more fruit and character. So this week we go off-piste with some slightly different rosés, all costing less than €20.
Remember that a dark-coloured rosé wine is not an indicator of a sweet wine. Quite often they are fruitier but still bone dry. Rosés are among the most adaptable wines, perfect sipped poolside on a hot sunny day or before a barbecue, but great with food too. Serve one with mixed summer salads, spicy Asian food and even with barbecued white meats and fish.

Two fast and easy midweek dinners that don't scrimp on flavour

This week I'm returning to my tried, tested and trusted recipes, ones that never fail to impress. Our house is like many around the country: busy, sometimes messy and full of constantly hungry people. As such, midweek dinners need to be quick, fulfilling and not cost the earth to put together. A well-stocked pantry and fridge is key to nailing this brief, using ingredients that are high in flavour and seasoning without breaking the bank. I'm also a divil for having the freezer stocked with garlic bread, a must for mopping up the sauce of this week's dishes. Both of these recipes are pasta-based and designed to live in a bowl. This means they can be swimming in sauce, which is where all the good stuff lives anyway. The first dish uses bucatini pasta, a thicker version of spaghetti (which will also work just fine). The sauce, which can be brought together in just 12 minutes, is made from cooking out a fennel bulb in olive oil and fennel seeds. While that's happening and as the pasta cooks, we make a simple pesto of capers, Parmesan and pine nuts. This is high in seasoning and, when added to the pasta sauce, immediately raises the flavour bar. Capers are definitely an ingredient to add to the pantry list. READ MORE Sausage, courgette and rosemary rigatoni. Photograph: Harry Weir The second dish turns to the humble sausage. Here, I'm using an Italian-style sausage with lovely savoury herbs and the perfect amount of seasoning. Cooking it off in oil and getting some colour stuck to the base of the pan is where the magic happens. Don't be afraid to let it get hot. [ Two Italian wines from Tesco to drink with pasta Opens in new window ] Rosemary brings another layer of Italian flair. Courgette has never been a vegetable that has floated my boat, but wilted down in pasta sauce and Parmesan, I'm anyone's. I've just ribboned them instead of using a peeler for ease of cleaning and speed. These dishes are quick, filling and full of flavour, because hectic lives still deserve delicious food. Charlotte Tilbury's new cream blush is summer skin, bottled

This time last year, I wrote about Charlotte Tilbury's new Unreal Skin Foundation Stick (€47 from Brown Thomas). It offered light bulb skin in foundation stick form – a finish so luminous it looked like you were permanently standing in front of a ring light. Offensively, aggressively radiant skin – and I absolutely loved it. Twelve months on , Tilbury has launched a cream blush version of that same formula , intensely pigmented (as her products always are) with that same unmistakable sheen. Unreal Blush Healthy Glow Collection (€40 each from Brown Thomas) encompasses six shades, ranging from deep berry hues (Berry Glow) to intense fuchsia pink (Pinky Glow) to a rich cherry red (Cherry Glow), with more in between. Housed in a stick, they're designed for swipe-and-go application, offering a strong hit of colour with a very noticeable glossy sheen – more blush-highlighter hybrid than subtle flush. Tilbury, never one to shy away from a bit of romantic drama, says: 'I wanted to bottle the unreal glow of Ibiza sunsets and golden hour, that dreamy glow of happiness you get when you're on holiday.' She's done just that. READ MORE Charlotte Tilbury Unreal Blush Healthy Glow Collection Aside from lashings of sunscreen, brightly hued cream blush is, to me, the epitome of summer. Nothing says 'healthy, sun-kissed, summer loving' quite like a gorgeous pop of peach or pink on the cheeks. I think I might be blush-blind which is, delightfully, a real internet trend. It basically means you're someone who applies too much blush. But really, is it even possible to apply too much cream blush? [ From soothing serums to hydrating masks, these overnight heroes work hard for your skin while you sleep Opens in new window ] Some other cream blush favourites for summer include: Jones Road Miracle Balm (€46 from ), a multitasking wonder that works on lips, eyes, and cheeks. Jones Road Miracle Balm in Miami Beach (€46 from My current favourite shades are Pinched Cheeks, a cool-toned rosy pink, and Miami Beach, a bright coral-peach. Both add a sheer wash of colour and a dewy glow to the skin. One pot seems to last forever, too. If you're after something compact and chic, Rhode Pocket Blush (€32 from ) is a great option. Rhode Pocket Blush in Juice Box: The formula melts into the skin A strong nine-piece shade range (standouts include Juice Box, a hot pink, and Spicy Marg, an orange-coral), creamy texture, and quick and easy application. The formula melts into the skin. Chanel has stepped up their cream blush game this summer, too. Their bestselling Healthy Glow Sheer Colour Stick is available in two new shades as part of the Les Beiges Golden Hour summer collection. Chanel Healthy Glow Sheer Colour Stick in Refresh delivers a flush of colour that looks and feels expensive Reset, a luminous orange-coral, and Refresh, a bright, cool-toned pink (€48 each from Boots). Both look somewhat bold in the tube, but in reality deliver a sheer flush of colour that looks and feels expensive. This week I'm using … Sol De Janeiro Body Badalada Lotion A new vitamin-infused lotion from Sol de Janeiro, Badalada Body Lotion (€32 from Brown Thomas) smells and feels like a slightly softer, more pared-back version of their bestselling Bum Bum Cream – and it's also more affordable, at €32 for a generous 400ml bottle. Sol de Janeiro's Badalada Body Lotion costs €32 and is available from Brown Thomas Formulated with vitamins K and E plus hyaluronic acid, it's perfect for soothing post-sun skin or for daily hydration that leaves your skin looking amazing (and smelling of summer holidays).

Look inside: Foxrock family home and guest apartment for €2.2m

Address : Greentops, Bray Road, Foxrock, Dublin 18 Price : €2,200,000 Agent : Janet Carroll Estate Agents View this property on The popular and much sought-after suburb of Foxrock began life in the late 1850s, when the Bentley and Fox families imagined a garden suburb in what was then a wilderness in comparison to the busy Dublin city-centre smog. Their planned self-contained community, designed to have plenty of green spaces and leisure facilities, began with the roads of Westminster, Brighton and Torquay, which at that time had access to the city via the Harcourt Street railway line. As houses popped up, so too did community life with the establishment of schools, churches and a golf club, founded in 1898, while racing at Leopardstown Racecourse had its first gallop in 1888. Said to be inspired by Sandown Park in the UK, the racecourse lies on a 220-acre estate which has become a cornerstone of Irish racing culture. Low-density, varying house styles which had good-sized front and rear gardens along with amenities far from the bustling city were what attracted buyers back then. More than a century later, these reasons still draw house-hunters at the upper end of the market. Greentops, a spacious detached home, lies directly opposite the junction with Westminster Road along the N11. In fact, you can see right up Westminster Road from the bedrooms to the front of Greentops, giving sylvan views of the mature plantings of older houses. But you don't really hear a thing despite its location, as the property has triple-glazed windows and is well set back from the N11. READ MORE [ Look inside: Architects' refurbished and extended Ballsbridge home for €1.75m Opens in new window ] Hall Kitchen Family room Sitting room in the main house Dining room in the main house It is one of five houses with unusual green tiled roofs along this stretch of the N11. All have generous sites and rear gardens. Greentops sits on a 0.14-hectare (0.34 acre) plot according to the planning permission granted in 2007 for additional accommodation on the site. This saw a single-storey shed/utility room knocked and replaced with a two-storey apartment to the side of the main house. At 112sq m (1,206sq ft), the apartment is more akin to a two-storey guest house given its size, two bedrooms, kitchen, dining and separate living space. This is in addition to Greentops – the main house in the photographs – which is a spacious five-bedroom residence. When the two-bedroom unit was being planned, its design also allowed for the unit to be amalgamated with the main house to create an even more spacious 298sq m (3,213sq ft) seven-bedroom home, if required. Testament to its current residents, it is in great condition, and the Ber rating of B2 is indicative of improvements over the years to make it what it is today: a fine, substantial home that will accommodate the needs of a large family on a generous site, close to a wealth of amenities. It has four reception rooms, including a family room, livingroom and diningroom – that lie off a well-appointed kitchen – in addition to a dual-aspect sittingroom that runs the full depth of the house. At its core is a triple-aspect kitchen with an Aga taking centre stage opposite a solid oak breakfast bar. Appliances include a Liebherr fridge-freezer and a wine fridge with buckets of storage space in wall-lined kitchen units. From here, there is access via sliding doors to a raised deck housing a barbecue, dining area and outside seating space. Overlooking the rear garden, which has a westerly aspect, it's a great space for family gatherings with lovely views over the well-stocked grounds. Kitchen in the apartment Dining area of the apartment Deck to the rear overlooking the garden The house stands on a third of an acre With five bedrooms – one currently laid out as a study – the principal bedroom enjoys dual aspect and has a Jacuzzi bath in its en suite, which is one of four en suites in this energy-efficient house. It will be the size, condition and the fact that the house has a separate self-contained two-bedroom guest house that will attract well-heeled house-hunters to Greentops. Its proximity to Foxrock Village, a golf course and indeed a racecourse, along with amenities such as shopping at Dunnes Stores's flagship Cornelscourt store, a selection of popular schools, boutique shops, cafes and restaurants, add to its offering. The property, which qualifies for a green mortgage, is now on the market, seeking €2.2 million through Janet Carroll Estate Agents.
