Ahmed Bham, head of Gift of the Givers' search and rescue team, told broadcaster Newzroom Afrika that the airwing of the South African Police Service has been instrumental in finding the bodies.
"We have a multi-disciplinary search and rescue team consisting of the South African Police Service, Department of Health and Gift of the Givers. We said over the next two days, we are going to intensify our searches, and we are lucky to have the (SAPS) airwing assisting us. We were in the flight as well to look at the Mthatha Dam, flying to the rivers, when we recovered two bodies at the same place yesterday (Saturday)," said Bham.
"While hovering and doing our searches we saw that something was odd in the water. We sent in our rescue diver and he confirmed that it was a third body. Our other teams are working around the Mthatha River quite intensively with the 'crocs' - the boats that they use in this type of situation, along the river on both sides, combing the area with K9s."
On Saturday, IOL reported that Police Minister Senzo Mchunu confirmed the revised death toll, up from 78 the previous day, in a meeting with officers and rescue personnel.
More than 38 people have been rescued thus far, while search and rescue teams remain on the ground recovering additional bodies, SAPS spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said.

This comes as families continue to search morgues for loved ones who went missing during last week's catastrophic weather events, which caused severe flooding to engulf parts of Mthatha and surrounding areas in the early hours of Tuesday morning, SABC News reported.
President Cyril Ramaphosa visited some of the affected communities where he expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families in the affected communities.

261 arrested in Tshwane crime crackdown
A total of 261 suspects have been arrested in a sweeping, high-impact crime-combating initiative led by police under the banner of Operation Shanela in the Tshwane District. The multidisciplinary operation, which focused on the Sinoville and Villieria policing precincts, was spearheaded by Tshwane District Commissioner Major-General Samuel Thine in collaboration with various law enforcement partners. The co-ordinated effort, executed on June 19, forms part of ongoing SAPS strategies to curb crime and enhance visibility in known hotspots. With intensified patrols, compliance inspections, and suspect tracing, law enforcement officers targeted criminal elements plaguing the northern parts of Tshwane. Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk said the operation yielded significant results. He said of the 261 suspects arrested, 187 were apprehended through detective work. These arrests include seven suspects for murder, three for attempted murder, nine for armed robbery, 30 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and six for rape. Van Dyk said road safety and immigration compliance were also in focus. A major roadblock, executed with support from tactical teams, led to the detention of 63 undocumented foreign nationals. The individuals are currently undergoing processing for possible court appearances and deportation. 'As part of proactive enforcement, 682 individuals and 306 vehicles were searched during the operation, with ownership of 14 vehicles verified. Officers also conducted patrols across 35 high-crime areas and premises, resulting in multiple arrests. 'One suspect was arrested for possession and dealing in dagga. Police recovered a shopping bag full of dagga, two compressed dagga balls, and 28 small bags of dagga, along with an undisclosed amount of cash,' said Van Dyk. He said another individual was taken into custody for possession of suspected stolen property. The suspect was found in possession of three TV sets, seven cellphones, two tablets, and two watches. He failed to provide a plausible explanation for the goods. Traffic law enforcement also formed a critical pillar of the operation. Tshwane traffic officers issued 160 AARTO infringement notices amounting to R72 600. Seven minibus taxis were impounded for various violations of the Road Traffic Act, and five pedestrians were fined for creating dangerous circumstances on the roads. Six premises were inspected, and two were shut down for failing to comply with the Liquor Act. Police confiscated over 127 litres of alcohol during the crackdown. Major-General Thine expressed appreciation for the dedication and co-operation of all SAPS members and stakeholders who participated in the operation. 'The collective efforts of our law enforcement family continue to bring tangible results in our fight against crime,' he said. Shooting near White River Rugby Club: Man appears in court for murder The man allegedly at the centre of a recent shooting near White River Rugby Club, Marco Schalekamp (42), handed himself over to police on Tuesday. During his first court appearance, the state claimed he has ties to several residential addresses and own three passports, making him a flight risk. The Lowvelder reports that Schalekamp faces charges of murder and attempted murder following the fatal shooting of Pieter Burger and the critical wounding of Arno van Niekerk. Emergency responders describe chaotic scene The incident unfolded in Danie Joubert Street in the early hours of June 5. Burger died at the scene, reportedly from a gunshot wound to the heart. Van Niekerk sustained severe injuries to his abdomen, chest, back, shoulder and head. He has since been discharged from the hospital. Schalekamp was also critically wounded – shot through both cheeks, with additional injuries to his neck and shoulders. Emergency responders and police described a chaotic scene. Schalekamp was found bleeding in his vehicle, in which his young son and pet dog were also present, but unharmed. A family friend later removed both from the scene. The SAPS recovered multiple firearms and several spent cartridges. Police say the motive remains unclear, with several conflicting versions of events still under review. Accused owns three passports, state claims he is a flight risk In the White River Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, where security around the courthouse was exceptionally tight, the defence attorney, Leendert Viljoen, applied for the matter to be brought forward to June 20. However, the prosecutor, Mbongeni Chris Magagula, objected, stating that Schalekamp's ties to three addresses – Mooiplaas, Barberton and Pretoria, and his reported possession of two to three passports, posed a significant flight risk. Magistrate Nakedi Malomane granted a seven-day postponement. The case will return to court on June 25. Schalekamp had allegedly discharged himself from the hospital due to fears for his safety. His legal team requested single-cell detention owing to a C2 vertebra injury – a request the magistrate denied. A 27-year-old man was gunned down in an alleged gang-related shooting. Elsies River parents are concerned about the safety of their children after two separate shooting incidents in the middle of the day left three people dead on Wednesday. Communities such as Eureka Estate, Clarke Estate, Uitsig, Ravensmead and surrounding areas have been under siege from continuous gun violence. School learners had to scramble to safety when a 27-year-old man was gunned down in an alleged gang-related shooting in Gladiola Street at 2.10pm when returning from the shop. Earlier in the day, two people aged 30 and 40 years were also gunned down in a drive-by shooting in Eureka Estate around 12.30pm on the corner of 40th and 42nd Avenue. Residents are fearing for their lives and one parent is hoping that her kids will stay indoors during the school holidays as the gangsters run riot on the streets. The parent said: 'I am a bit relieved that the schools are closing, but we still have people who need to go to work early and come back safe. 'When they are not shooting, they are targeting the cars, smash-and-grab and throwing cars with stones.' Another added: 'They shoot at any time. I have to fetch my children from school and be vigilant always because they don't care if it is children or adults, they shoot. 'We stay in the house but we are still not safe because bullets travel and we need to go to the shop and they like standing on the corners.' Police say that additional boots on the ground have been deployed in the Ravensmead policing precinct. Police spokesman Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi reported: 'Ravensmead police responded to a complaint on Wednesday June 18 2025. Upon their arrival in Gladiola Street at about 2.10pm, they found the body of a man who sustained a gunshot wound. 'The victim was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel. Reports suggested that the victim returned from a local spaza shop when an unknown gunman opened fire, fatally wounding the 27-year-old man. 'The motive for this attack is believed to be gang-related. The unknown suspect fled the scene and is yet to be arrested.' Of the drive-by shooting, Sergeant Wesley Twigg said that SAPS detectives are investigating two counts of murder. He confirmed: 'Police members responded to a complaint of a shooting and upon arrival on the scene they found the victims with gunshot wounds to their bodies. Both victims were declared deceased on the scene...' According to reports a white Toyota Corolla drove up to the victims and opened fire. Cape Argus
