PFF picks this starter as Rams' make-or-break player in 2025
The Los Angeles Rams made a lot of preparations this offseason to build on the success of 2024 and create a championship-caliber team in 2025.
Matthew Stafford is back, the offensive line is mostly the same and the team even added Davante Adams to replace Cooper Kupp. While the defense remains a work in progress, this Rams squad has the makings of another team who can compete in the playoffs.
A lot of the Rams' success hinges on Stafford's ability to stay healthy and upright, though. That's why Pro Football Focus's Dalton Wasserman wrote that starting left tackle Alaric Jackson is the Rams' top make-or-break player heading into the season.
"No current starting quarterback needs proficient pass protection as much as Matthew Stafford," Wasserman wrote. "That's a huge reason why the Rams re-signed left tackle Alaric Jackson to a three-year contract worth roughly $19 million per year. Unfortunately, Jackson is now dealing with a blood clot issue that puts his status in doubt, at least for the beginning of the 2025 season. The Rams ranked 30th in the NFL in PFF pass-blocking grade last season, and Jackson is arguably the most important part of a turnaround in the department."
General manager Les Snead wouldn't have re-signed Jackson if he didn't think he was an important piece of the Rams' 2025 puzzle. The former undrafted free agent has shone in recent years and is coming off a solid season despite missing the first two games with a PED suspension.
The blood clot issue isn't good, as a similar ailment cost Jackson the final nine games of the 2022 season. The Rams signed veteran D.J. Humphries to step up in case Jackson needs to miss time. Jackson's deal is big, but it's effectively just a two-year deal, which gives the Rams some flexibility if Jackson's health goes south.
The Rams have to hope it doesn't come to that.

FIFA could give Jackson a longer suspension if it chooses to review the tackle. Find out where CBS Sports puts Matthew Stafford, Brock Purdy, Kyler Murray and Sam Darnold in their 2025 QB tiers. The NFL is done with all offseason work and it is the time of year where we get lists and rankings of all sorts. CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin ranked and tiered all 32 projected starting quarterbacks for 2025. The tiers? Arizona Cardinals fans will have interest in seeing where the quarterbacks in the NFC West fall? While we did focus on Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray already, let's see about all four starters in the division. NFC West quarterback tiers The four starters in the division fall into two categories: Borderline stars Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams and Brock Purdy of the San Francisco 49ers fall here, and they are fairly tiered. Stafford has been elite talent for much of his career, but now he is a little less consistent and needs his playmakers to do more, while Purdy, after MVP-type production, saw his play level out after he missed top offensive players. Volatile veterans Murray probably should be up in the borderline star tier, but he hasn't looked like that since 2021. He isn't necessarily volatile because, at his worst, he plays at a league-average level. Seattle's Sam Darnold is the face of volatile veteran. While his 2024 season showed the level of play he could reach when he was drafted third overall in 2018, he has been wildly inconsistent in his career, prone to turnovers. he won't have the weapons he had in Minnesota, so he will have to prove himself again with the Seahawks. Dillon Wade was a valuable piece to Auburn's offensive line in 2024 by playing over 100 snaps at three different positions last season. Wade spent the majority of last season playing left tackle, where he totaled 379 snaps. Outside of tackle, he provided help at left guard and right tackle by playing 254 and 116 snaps, respectively. He added two snaps at right guard as well. The 2024 season was unique for Wade, who is primarily a left tackle. In 2023, he played 816 snaps at left tackle for Auburn, adding three at right tackle.
