Australian top-order under scrutiny after WTC defeat at Lord's
Australia could shake up their batting after crashing to South Africa in the World Test Championship final, with captain Pat Cummins saying a "reset" was needed ahead of three Tests in the West Indies and a home Ashes series.
The five-wicket defeat at Lord's on Saturday, after posting a 74-run first-innings lead, has renewed focus on Australia's top order which has struggled since opener David Warner retired 17 months ago.
The elevation of out-of-form Marnus Labuschagne as Usman Khawaja's fifth opening partner since Warner bowed out did not work, while the experiment of Cameron Green at three flopped.
The 38-year-old Khawaja is also under the microscope, scoring nought and six as his lean spell against pace continued.
Green made four in the first innings and lasted only two balls before departing for a duck in the second as the new-look top three managed a total of 49 runs in the match.
Australia's batting woes were laid bare, particularly in the second innings, when only a plucky unbeaten fifty from fast-bowler Mitchell Starc and 43 from wicketkeeper Alex Carey gave the Proteas a tough chase.
"There's probably quite a few people in the line-up that wish they could have done a little bit more," Cummins told reporters.
"The top three was an obvious one in this game."
With the 2027 WTC cycle kicking off when Australia travel to the West Indies for a three-Test series beginning in Barbados on June 25, the skipper admitted "it does feel like a little bit of a fresh start".
"We've got a couple of weeks before the first Test in the Windies, so we'll sit down and have a bit of a think after we digest this game," he said.
"But for me, I think a new WTC cycle in some ways does feel like a bit of a reset.
"It's probably more for the selectors and for me to sit down and map it ahead."
Compounding Australia's woes, veteran Steve Smith, who hit a majestic first innings' 66, is doubtful for the first West Indies Test after dislocating his finger.
If he is ruled out, gung-ho teenager Sam Konstas, who played two Tests against India last summer before being dropped, could slot back in alongside Khawaja.
That would allow Labuschagne to drop back to three, should he survive the axe after averaging just 25.63 in Tests during the 2024/25 season.
There is also the option of Josh Inglis, who was in the WTC squad, as an opener.
Australian media made it clear that change was needed, with The Australian newspaper calling the defeat a "wake-up call" with the five-Test Ashes series against England beginning in November.
"Father Time is undefeated and selectors must now be decisive over key calls for the future," it said.
Cummins acknowledged all cards were on the table with only five months to go until the first Ashes Test in Perth beginning on November 20.
"Coming to this match, you've got guys like Sam Konstas and Scotty Boland and Josh Inglis, all those guys were right on the fringes," he said.
"So I think again, after this Test match, everyone gets thrown back into the conversation."

Young Australian opener Sam Konstas believes he has come a long way after his Boxing Day Test debut, where he scored a blazing half-century. The batter who did not feature for Australia in the ICC World Test Championship 2025 Final, is expected to open the innings along with Usman Khawaja in the West Indies. "There were quite a few lessons - one was my mental side," the young opener told as he recollected memories from his first Test match against India. "That was my first time playing in front of a big crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), so I've worked on trying to control my emotions better. "The second thing would be technical. I've been working on a few things with my front foot, opening it up slightly to get better access. It just helps work on my defence, as I felt there may be a slight weakness in that. "Those are the two things I'm working on and hopefully holds me in a good stead for the next few games." Konstas had everyone talking after he took on India seamer Jasprit Bumrah in his very first game and made an impact with his debut knock. "It was good reflecting and having a bit of time off to try to strengthen my game up," he added. The right-hander feels he is not trying to prove how he approaches his game to others while also speaking with his seniors, seeking guidance on how to navigate the game-changing phases in the match, especially the heated moments. "I chat to Usman Khawaja all the time on and off the field, whenever we train, I always try to get advice from Uzzie, Marnus [Labuschagne] or [Steve] Smith just seeing how they go about it. "I just want to be myself and understand when to take on the game and when to soak up the pressure to win games to Australia. The young batter, who will be the part of only his third Test, feels he is lucky to be where he is at that age and playing against the best players, getting to experience different cultures. "Obviously it's a tough team to crack into as we've got legends of the game in that team. For me, hopefully I grab my opportunity because it's such a strong side and I'm very grateful for that. "I've been trying to focus on a few key areas with my batting coach, and I feel like I've come a long way, so hopefully I can display that the next few Test matches. "It's been good training with the whole group and getting to know everyone a lot more." ILT20, KCB enter strategic partnership for growth of the sport in Kuwait
The DP World International League T20 and the Kuwait Cricket Board have entered an exciting partnership for the growth of the sport in Kuwait. Through the partnership the DP World ILT20 will organise cricket matches in the country which will be aimed at identifying and developing the participating players. The agreement between the Kuwait Cricket Board and DP World ILT20 was inked at a signing ceremony organised recently at the Dubai International Stadium. As per the agreement, a domestic event like the DP World ILT20 UAE Development Tournament, will be conducted annually in Kuwait to provide the players from Kuwait an opportunity to get selected by ILT20 franchises for the main DP World ILT20 event. In the coming years, the league will also aim to host DP World ILT2o matches in Kuwait.
