Aamir Khan Clarifies Why He Reacted To Pahalgam Attack Late: "I Don't Consider Terrorists Muslims"

NDTV5 days ago

New Delhi:
Aamir Khan's initial reactions to the Pahalgam terror attack came almost a week later after India and Pakistan had agreed on a ceasefire, followed by India's retaliatory attack on terror camps of Pakistan under Operation Sindoor. Aamir Khan faced flak from a section of the Internet for responding to the attack just a few hours before the trailer of his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par released. In a recent interview with India TV, Aamir Khan responded to the queries why he talked about the attack late. He also defended Islam, saying Pahalgam terrorists are not "Muslims" as his religion doesn't endorse violence.
What's Happening
Aamir Khan, in a recent interview, addressed the query why he responded to the Pahalgam attack late while his contemporaries did it much earlier.
Aamir Khan argued he was late condemning the attack as he's not on social media.
"I'm not on social media. People react instantly to these events there," said the actor.
"The terror attack was cruel. It only demonstrates the terrorists' cowardice that they entered our country and fired bullets on common men. You or I could've also been there. They asked their religion and then fired bullets. What does that mean," added Aamir.
Responding to the allegation that his response came at a time when the release of his latest film is nearing, Aamir said, "If I speak about our forces delivering a befitting response, then am I doing something wrong? Should I think about the film or about our forces at that time? If I keep quiet just because my film is about to release, I feel that's wrong. So I spoke about it openly."
Aamir Khan defended that the Sitaare Zameen Par trailer releasing just 12 hours after his official statement was a mere coincidence.
"The trailer was supposed to release much earlier. I cancelled it because of the attack on our nation. I cancelled the premiere of Andaz Apna Apna that day," explained Aamir. His 1994 cult Rajkumar Santoshi's Andaz Apna Apna was re-released in cinemas on April 25.
Aamir also defended Islam by saying that it doesn't endorse violence. "No religion asks you to kill people. I don't consider these terrorists Muslims because it's written in Islam that you can't kill any innocent human, can't strike a woman or a child. They're going against the religion by doing what they are doing," said Aamir.
Aamir Khan also recalled an instance where the film veteran Manoj Kumar (died on April 4) complimented him for carrying forward his legacy of patriotic films.
"My patriotism reflects in my work. Watch Rang De Basanti (2006), Lagaan (2001), Sarfarosh (1999). I don't think any other actor has done more patriotic films than I have," claimed Aamir.
In A Nutshell
Aamir Khan, who's not on social media, condemned the Pahalgam terror attack (April 22) almost over a week later after the two nations agreed on a ceasefire. Aamir Khan was slammed on social media for releasing his official statement hours before the Sitaare Zameen Par trailer released. Ahead of the film's release, Aamir Khan responded to the allegations.

Kajol reveals Shah Rukh Khan was rude and mean to her during the shoot of 'Baazigar': 'I was not even 18 at that time...'

Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan are one of the most celebrated duos both on screen and off screen for their great camaraderie and believable on-screen presence. But the actress has now revealed that their first meeting was not as smooth as it is today. Kajol about Shah Rukh Khan 's first reaction to her Kajol shared that during the filming of Baazigar in 1992, both Shah Rukh and she had different energies. In a chat with Radio Nasha, Kajol said, 'First of all, I was not even 18 at that time—around seventeen and a half years old. We were shooting on January 1. Shah Rukh likes to shoot on that day. Saal ke pehle din shooting karo toh poore saal karte ho.' Shah Rukh Khan Surprises Sitaare Zameen Par Cast | Aamir Called Him 10 Times! Kajol's energy on set Kajol was the only one buzzing with excitement after a full night's rest, while the whole set was tired from the celebrations. She recounted how her talkative nature kicked in while others preferred silence. But her attempt to engage Shah Rukh in conversation didn't go as planned. Kajol recalled sitting beside him and playfully questioning his serious demeanour. However, SRK wasn't amused. 'Can you please shut up for a minute? Somebody shut her up, for God's sake,' he said. Kajol remembered feeling taken aback and called it 'so rude and mean' at the time. But later the duo developed a strong friendship. 'Of course, that led to a great friendship. I don't think he even remembers half of it,' she said. Kajol about Shah Rukh Khan pinching her to make correct reaction in a scene The conversation also touched on a memorable scene in Baazigar that required a touch of sensuality. Kajol was unsure how to portray that role as she was just 18. She admitted struggling with the shot until choreographer Saroj Khan stepped in with a quirky solution. 'Saroj ji said that you have to suddenly feel 'aah'. It has to be an expression of sensuality. I told her I don't understand,' she said. Kajol revealed that SRK was asked to pinch her during the scene to help her deliver the right expression. She added that over the years, both she and SRK have shared many such goofy and spontaneous moments on set. Kajol's work front Kajol is preparing for the release of her upcoming horror film Maa, which is set to arrive in cinemas on June 27.

'Exclusively in theatres': Bollywood tests new methods to release movies

Bollywood is trying out various scripts to lure audiences back to the big screen. This comes as the rising dominance of over-the-top (OTT) platforms makes it difficult for movies to run for long periods on the silver screen, thus hurting the cinema industry. The latest attempt is by Aamir Khan, who decided to release his film, Sitaare Zameen Par, exclusively in theatres. On Thursday, Multiplex Association of India (MAI) applauded Aamir Khan's decision to release the film exclusively in theatres. This comes after some media reports said that the much-awaited movie is expected to be released on YouTube through a pay-per-view model after its theatre release, and not on OTT platforms. According to a film trade analyst, it is still not confirmed if the RS Prasanna-directed sequel to Taare Zameen Par will be released on YouTube. On the other hand, Girish Wankhede, film trade analyst, said it is highly unlikely for any other movie to be released on YouTube. Selling the rights of movies to streaming platforms helps producers recover a certain amount of their invested budget on the film. Through YouTube, the chances of recovering this money are unlikely. He further noted that Sitaare Zameen Par isn't a mass-audience film like Dangal or PK. These had the possibility of working well on a popular platform like YouTube. While select movies like Chhaava and Raid 2 performed well at the box office (BO), some high-profile ones like Salman Khan's Sikandar, Akshay Kumar's Sky Force, and the latest being Sajid Nadiadwala-produced Housefull 5 have failed to attract the desired footfalls and BO numbers. 'Housefull 5 was not successful because the cost of production was too high (around ₹250 crore). It will, at the most, make around ₹170 crore…Still, the film is in loss,' said Wankhede. After the opening weekend, the movie has seen a spike in its BO collection due to the ticket price offers on Tuesdays. In May, the producers (Maddock Films) of Rajkummar Rao-starrer Bhool Chuk Maaf had suddenly decided to release the movie directly on Amazon Prime Video, which was later released in theatres due to a court order. This order came after PVR INOX took Maddock Films to court for changing its decision to release the movie in theatres. The cumulative BO collection for January-May was up by 27 per cent to ₹4,812 crore compared to the same period last year, according to an Ormax Media report. These attempts by the industry come at a time when film producers are still in a 'wait-and-watch' mode and are thinking twice before starting to work on movies. This comes as several films have not made money at the BO. Some have not even recovered their costs.
