'The older Black women and me, we got a thing': Sterling K Brown knows his fanbase

Perth Now09-06-2025

Sterling K. Brown has a "thing" with "older Black women".
The This Is Us actor - who has sons Andrew, 13, and Amare, nine, with wife Ryan Michelle Bathe - acknowledged his popularity within a "certain set" after his friend Natasha Rothwell joked her parents' marriage almost ended in divorce because of her mom's crush on him.
In conversation for Variety's Actors on Actors series, Natasha said: "You're so charismatic and easy to watch. You almost broke up my parents' marriage. [My mother] loved Army Wives.
"I thought, 'If [Sterling] comes up here and ruins 47 years of marriage, I'm going to be upset.' "
Sterling noted: "I'm big with a certain set. The older Black women and me, we got a thing."
The 49-year-old actor caused a stir with a shower scene in his latest drama series Paradise, and Sterling admitted it makes him "happy" to know people find him attractive as he approaches 50.
He said: "I'm 49 years old, and the fact that anybody wants to see 49-year-old booty, it makes me happy."
The American Fiction star views his career as a type of "controlled schizophrenia".
He explained: "I look at this acting thing as sort of controlled schizophrenia, in that there's so many people inside of me, and each character gives me an opportunity to let one aspect of myself out. "
Sterling thinks the TV industry has changed hugely since the early days of his career, as a lot of production has moved outside of Los Angeles, and series are substantially shorter.
He said: "I remind myself that the industry is just 100 years old. When I first started, there was a thing called pilot season. There was many a network drama. There was many a serialised. There were 22 to 24 episodes. Now we're doing six or eight.
"And so much has left Los Angeles.
"I was just working in Australia, and there were seven other productions living in my hotel."
Natasha agreed: "There was a game show shooting near us in Thailand.
"There's a little bit of 'Molly, you in danger, girl' about it all."

Karol G unhappy with critics

Karol G is unhappy with criticism of her song 'Latina Forever'. The 34-year-old singer's ode to Latin women was slammed for sexualising women with the lyrics 't*** and a**' but Karol thinks it is unfair that she gets blasted for singing raunchy songs. She told Variety: 'I feel like the bigger the project gets, the harder the people get with me. I think there are different opinions on how I should and shouldn't be acting at this point in my career and it gets so confusing sometimes that it becomes hard to handle. 'It's difficult, because the video is incredible but I knew having us in bikinis with me singing about t*** and a** … I just knew it was going to be a talking point. But the way I see it, I am just singing of my realities. I don't want to change myself to have to please anyone, either. I have emotional songs on this record that are soul-touching, and then I have my fun and sometimes raunchy songs - Latinas are everything. Why can't we just be everything?' Meanwhile, Karol is one of the few Latin artists – including Luis Miguel, Bad Bunny and Shakira – who have embarked on a global stadium tour and she admitted she still hasn't processed how monumental it is. She said: 'I haven't spoken with [Bad Bunny], but I would love the opportunity to get to talk to him about the experience, because it is such a massive accomplishment that I haven't fully digested. When we first sat down to route the tour, everyone kept telling me, 'Don't you think it's too much too fast?' I'm so proud that we did it. I remember thinking 'My God, Shakira is doing this. I'm doing this?! I get to do what she does on this scale?!' It's insane.'

FKA twigs designs 'sensual and strong' sneakers

FKA twigs has co-designed a pair of "sensual and strong" sneakers for activewear brand ON. The 37-year-old pop star teamed up with the company last year as a creative partner and she's starred in several campaigns but has now helped create a new capsule collection which reflects her busy lifestyle including the Cloud x FKA shoe - which retail for £170 - and the singer admits she wanted the pieces to be able to to take her from rehearsals to meetings and studio sessions. She said in a statement: "I live a busy and varied life, often moving between training, meetings, and studio sessions in a single day. I wanted to create pieces that could move with me through those shifts - pieces that feel sensual and strong, and reflect all the different sides of who I am. "This capsule collection is about feeling confident in your body and free to express yourself -- whether you're dancing, creating, or just moving through your day." A statement posted by ON on Instagram added: "A collection that explores movement as a source of constant transformation. Inspired by dance, designed for self-expression." The collection also includes the Studio Bra FKA (£75) which is designed to provide "no feel" comfort as well as the Studio Short FKA (£85) which is a hybrid of shorts and a skirt. Other pieces co-designed by the singer include tights, a long-sleeved T-shirt, a cropped hoodie, a scarf, headband and socks. The capsule collection is due to be released by the end of June. The singer previously revealed she is as meticulous about her beauty regime as she is about her fashion choices, FKA Twigs admitted she has a "vigorous" routine using "healing" products as part of a self-care ritual, telling Harper's Bazaar: "I express myself through ritual; for me it's not really about the end result, it's knowing that every single day I'm doing something to take care of myself." Twigs went on to reveal she uses Amala Pro Retinoic Treatment Oil which is packed full of 23K Gold as well as plant seeds and oils and retails at around £195. She also uses the £515 FaceGym Pro which is described as "a non-invasive facial device that uses electrical muscle stimulation to strengthen, tone and sculpt the face". She said of the gadget: "It basically lifts your face an inch ... it's like a mini facelift." The singer concluded by insisting she now has a much healthier approach to looking after herself, adding: "I used to be really hard on myself to be perfect, or have perfect skin or perfect hair, or be a certain weight. I don't feel like that anymore ... (self-care) alleviates a lot of the pressure of the usual beauty standards that I think we can all fall in a trap with".

Bad Bunny believes 'it feels silly to complain' about fame

Bad Bunny has declared "it feels silly to complain" about fame. The musician - real name Benito Martínez Ocasio - has become one of the most high-profile Latin stars in the world in recent years but he's determined to remain humble and insists his job is just to "sing" and cannot be compared to other professions despite all of the "sacrifices" he has to make. He told Variety: "At times, I do think ... what I'm signing up for is a lot. But the way I see it, I'm not a doctor; I'm not a teacher; I'm not someone who has to wake up every morning at 5 a.m. to lay down concrete on a busy road to survive. "My job is to f****** sing, and even though it comes with its own set of sacrifices, it feels silly to complain about it." He went on to add that he loves performing and hopes to continue for many years to come. Bad Bunny said: 'I like to perform like nobody there knows who I am or what I've accomplished. The stage is where I'm the most present and happiest. I'll probably be doing this until I'm an old man." In the interview, Bad Bunny credited his small circle of friends with keeping him grounded - insisting he's stayed close to pals he's known since childhood - and he's staying connected to his roots as he still lives in his native Puerto Rico despite finding fame in the US. He explained: "I've always felt that I read people extremely well ... "I'm very intuitive with who and how I spend my time. I take care of my mental and heart space ... "There are people that I work with who I've known since I was a kid, and what a blessing that is - to know that despite the outside world and time passing, or anything, they still love me the same ... "I'm still me, my greatest friends are still the ones from my childhood, and in the middle of it all, there's always Puerto Rico. It's not like I'm living a detached reality - I still live on the island."
