Nurul Izzah admits hajj trip with hubby is self-funded after ‘backstabbing' by own PKR member

Focus Malaysia09-06-2025

NEWLY-ELECTED PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar has cleared the air that her hajj trip to Makkah with her husband was 'entirely self-funded' after an allegedly supporter of the pro-Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's faction accused her of splashing 'over RM200,000 per person' for her hajj expenses.
This came about after numerous slanderous social media posts and messages were hurled at the former Permatang Pauh MP who had recently engaged in a bitter contest for the deputy president post in the PKR top central leadership poll amid cries of nepotism and favouritism.
Aside from perhaps the privileged Mujamalah visa – an invitational or special visa issued by the Saudi Arabian government outside of the official quota – the eldest daughter of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reasoned that logistical arrangements were managed by licensed travel agency, Mimm Travel.
'We travelled on commercial flights and used our own savings (to pay for accommodation and transportation),' Nurul Izzah penned on her Facebook page yesterday (June 8) evening.
'No private jet as falsely claimed. The journey was undertaken just like millions of other Hajj pilgrims.'
Added the 44-year-old Nurul Izzah who married her ex-colleague Yin Shao Loong (now a Khazanah Research Institute senior research associate) on Aug 5, 2022 after her marriage with first husband Raja Ahmad Shahrir ended in divorce on Jan 16, 2015:
'While we may differ in opinions and compete in the political arena of this world, let us not allow worship to be used as material for slander and defamation.
'Let us pray for one another; may Allah SWT grant sustenance and opportunities to more Muslims to become His guests – in a state that is made easy with accepted deeds and kept far from human slander.:
Earlier, pro-HIRUK (Rafizi's PKR poll campaign tagline) Malaysian Affairs 🇲🇾007 (@msianaffairs) had demanded to know what Nurul Izzah's income source was after having claimed that the cost of her hajj expenses with her husband could have exceeded RM400,000.
Siapa yang bayar kos haji Nurul Izzah yang berharga lebih RM200,000 seorang?
Apakah sumber pendapatan beliau?
Kos 2 orang izzah dan suami sudah melangkaui RM400k
Semua tahu dia tinggal di Dar Al Tawhid Intercontinental, the most luxurious hotel in Mekah@n_izzah @anwaribrahim pic.twitter.com/BJLUGuhMmf
— Malaysian Affairs 🇲🇾007 (@msianaffairs) June 7, 2025
'Everyone knows she stayed at Dar Al Tawhid Intercontinental, the most luxurious hotel in Mecca,' claimed the self-proclaimed anti-nepotism advocate.
Despite being criticised for poking his nose on Nurul Izzah's private matters at a time when the couple needed the peace of mind to perform their pilgrimage solemnly and wholesomely, Malaysian Affairs 🇲🇾007 whose social media post has garnered 1M views at the time of writing seemed unremorseful in wanting to pin down the PKR president's daughter despite her clarification.
'Things can be done for damage control. You can change hotels in the middle of the trip. You don't need a miracle to do that 🤣,' added the keyboard warrior. – June 9, 2025

Anwar's dilemma grows as allies compete for Cabinet posts

THE resignations of PKR's Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad as economy and natural resources ministers have sparked a race among unity government parties for the vacant Cabinet posts. This has deepened the dilemma faced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. UMNO, eyeing its seventh ministerial slot after Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz's defection to PKR, has proposed names like Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, sources said. Johari is the current Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister. Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan is also mentioned as a potential interim economy minister. Meanwhile, Amanah also is pushing for more representation, citing its strong track record, while MIC and MCA demand fairer Barisan Nasional (BN) representation, criticising UMNO's dominance. While Anwar faces pressure to balance coalition dynamics, both MIC and MCA have so far been denied ministerial posts, though they are under the BN banner, and BN is a loyal party to the Madani regime. Reports now suggest Johari is among those tipped to act as interim economy minister, replacing Rafizi, who made it clear he is not coming back to Anwar's cabinet. However, Anwar could also appoint Johari, analysts said, as a permanent economy minister in a portfolio swap between UMNO and PKR. A portfolio swap could happen, but the quota balance remains. Some reports are saying UMNO could propose others to replace Johari at the Commodities, such as Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan or Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail. We also have to note that last week, Amanah Johor called on the Prime Minister to allocate more cabinet positions to the party following the resignation of two ministers. Its deputy chairman Dr Zuhan Zain highlighted Amanah's strong performance and commitment to the unity government, citing leaders like the late Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, and Health Minister Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. While the vacant posts were previously held by Rafizi and Nik Nazmi, Zuhan argued that UMNO's nomination of non-PKR candidates opens opportunities for all coalition parties to propose their leaders. On the other hand, UMNO has been reminded not to behave as if it is the sole party representing BN in the coalition government. MIC strategic director R Thinalan criticised BN chairperson Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's push to maintain UMNO's seven ministerial positions after Tengku Zafrul's departure, calling it disappointing to MIC grassroots. Thinalan argued that UMNO is not the sole BN representative, questioning why MCA or MIC cannot fill Cabinet roles. He emphasised that Tengku Zafrul's former ministry belonged to BN, not UMNO exclusively, and insisted that any Cabinet appointments must involve discussions with other BN component parties, highlighting the need for a fairer representation within the coalition government. — June 21, 2025 Main photo credit: Reuters

Pro-Palestinian protest leader released from US custody

NEW YORK: Mahmoud Khalil, a former Columbia University student who was one of the most visible leaders of nationwide pro-Palestinian campus protests, was released Friday from a federal detention center. Khalil, a legal permanent resident in the United States who is married to a US citizen and has a US-born son, has been in custody since March facing potential deportation. 'This shouldn't have taken three months,' Khalil, wearing a Palestinian keffiyeh scarf, told US media outside an immigration detention center in Jena, Louisiana hours after a federal judge ordered his release. '(President Donald) Trump and his administration, they chose the wrong person for this,' he said. 'There's no right person who should be detained for actually protesting a genocide.' The Department of Homeland Security criticized District Judge Michael Farbiarz's ruling Friday as an example of how 'out of control members of the judicial branch are undermining our national security.' Under the terms of his release, Khalil will not be allowed to leave the United States except for 'self-deportation,' and faces restrictions on where he can travel within the country. Khalil's wife, Michigan-born dentist Noor Abdalla, said her family could now 'finally breathe a sigh of relief and know that Maumoud is on his way home.' 'We know this ruling does not begin to address the injustices the Trump administration has brought upon our family and so many others the government is trying to silence for speaking out against Israel's ongoing genocide against Palestinians,' added Abdalla, who gave birth to the couple's first child while her husband was in detention. - Visas revoked - Since his March 8 arrest by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, Khalil has become a symbol of Trump's campaign to stifle pro-Palestinian student activism against the Gaza war, in the name of curbing anti-Semitism. At the time a graduate student at Columbia University in New York, Khalil was a prominent leader of nationwide campus protests against Israel's war in Gaza. Following his arrest, US authorities transferred Khalil, who was born in Syria to Palestinian parents, nearly 2,000 kilometers (1,242 miles) from his home in New York to the detention center in Louisiana, pending deportation. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has invoked a law approved during the 1950s Red Scare that allows the United States to remove foreigners seen as adverse to US foreign policy. Rubio argues that US constitutional protections of free speech do not apply to foreigners and that he alone can make decisions without judicial review. Hundreds of students have seen their visas revoked, with some saying they were targeted for everything from writing opinion articles to minor arrest records. Farbiarz ruled last week that the government could not detain or deport Khalil based on Rubio's assertions that his presence on US soil poses a national security threat. The government has also alleged as grounds to detain and deport Khalil that there were inaccuracies in his application for permanent residency. Amol Sinha, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey, which is among the groups representing Khalil, welcomed the release order. 'This is an important step in vindicating Mr Khalil's rights as he continues to be unlawfully targeted by the federal government for his advocacy in support of Palestinian rights,' Sinha said.
