Maoist legacy of Gajarla family ends with Ravi: Top Maoist's four-decade journey ends in Andhra encounter; wife, brothers, cousins — all part of movement, most killed or surrendered
HYDERABAD: CPI (Maoist) central committee member Gajarla Ravi, who was killed in an encounter in the forest areas of Alluri Sitarama Raju district in Andhra Pradesh, joined the movement at a young age and gradually rose through the ranks.

A senior intelligence official told TOI, "He was just seven when he started running errands for the Naxals and putting up posters for them." There was a brief period in his youth when his brother Saraiah tried weaning Ravi away from the Maoists and made him join an ITI at Peddapalli.
But Ravi eventually joined the Chityala area Revolutionary Youth League in 1989-90. By 1990, he was in the Eturunagaram dalam, working alongside his cousin brothers Gajarla Ramesh alias Gajarla Naveen, who later died in an encounter in 2020.
Ironically, Saraiah too joined the Maoist movement later.
In 2002 Ravi, who was a district committee secretary of the Karimnagar east division, was demoted to district committee member after he was held responsible for the infamous Chintagudem bus blast in Warangal in which 20 civilians were killed and 16 others were injured.
However, he was soon promoted again. By 2004, he had become a state committee member and later took charge of the Khammam-Karimnagar-Warangal region under the North
Special Zonal Committee.
In 2009, he was shifted to the Andhra-Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC), becoming one of its top leaders.

Ravi's wife, Nidigonda Prameela alias Meena, was also a member of the Maoist ranks. She served as the divisional committee secretary of AOBSZC and died in an encounter in Andrapalli on Oct 12, 2018. Saraiah too was a central committee member and part of the central military commission.

He was killed in April 2008 in an encounter in Kanthanapally forest in Warangal along with his wife Padma alias Radha.
He had 70 criminal cases against him and was linked to the Manala killings, in which eight tribals were executed on charges of being police informers.
Another brother, Gajarla Ashok alias Aithu, was a district committee secretary of south Bastar. He surrendered in 2015 due to ill health. He now works as a reporter with a local newspaper.
His wife, Shanigarapu Uma alias Anitha, formerly part of a Maoist medical team, now works as a staff nurse in a private hospital in Hanamkonda.
The eldest brother, Gajarla Rajaiah alias Posaiah, did not survive the prolonged underground life and died due to ill health. The only brother to have led a non-Maoist life is Gajarla Sammaiah, a retired coal filler in Mancherial. A brother-in-law, Ramesh alias Naveen, also a Maoist, was killed in an encounter on July 26, 2020. He was part of the Annasagar dalam.

According to a report by The Times of India, a feasibility study is underway for a 113-km canal that would divert surplus flows from Jammu & Kashmir to Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan. This canal will link the Chenab with the Ravi-Beas-Sutlej system. The project aims to optimise India's share under the Indus Waters Treaty by ensuring better use of both eastern (Ravi, Beas, Sutlej) and western (Indus, Jhelum, Chenab) rivers, curbing excess flows into Pakistan. Live Events Sources told ToI that the proposed canal network will tie into 13 existing canal structures across J&K, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, eventually feeding into the Indira Gandhi canal system. The Ujh multipurpose project in Kathua district—pending for years—is also being revived. It would involve a barrage and tunnel to transfer water to the Beas basin. The Ujh is a tributary of the Ravi. India is also speeding up work on several hydroelectric plants — Pakal Dul (1,000 MW), Ratle (850 MW), Kiru (624 MW), and Kwar (540 MW) — to better utilise its Indus system share, ToI reported. Recently, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday reaffirmed Pakistan's willingness to talk with India on all outstanding issues, including Jammu and Kashmir, the Indus Water Treaty, trade and counter-terrorism. However, India has made it clear that it will only have a dialogue with Pakistan on the return of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and the issue of terrorism.

Gangster wanted for couple's murder killed in Firozabad police encounter
In Firozabad, a notorious gangster named Raju Khan, wanted for murder and robbery, was killed in an encounter with the police early Friday. SSP Saurabh Dixit reported that Khan opened fire on officers after being cornered, leading to retaliatory fire. AGRA: A notorious gangster, wanted in murder and robbery cases, was killed in an encounter with the police in the Firozabad district in the early hours of Friday. Police said the encounter happened at a secluded place under the jurisdiction of Shikohabad Police Station, following which the accused, Raju Khan , was taken to the community health centre in Shikohabad, where he was declared dead by the doctors. SSP Firozabad Saurabh Dixit told TOI that police received an alert from an informer that Khan, wanted in murder and robbery cases, was in the area. "Police surrounded the criminal near Nova Factory and asked him to surrender, but he started firing indiscriminately at the cops. In the retaliatory fire, Khan got injured and died during treatment. We have alerted the NHRC about the incident and requested DM Firozabad to launch a probe into it," SSP Dixit said. Sharing details about Khan's criminal record, Dixit further added that he was wanted in as many as five cases of murder, loot, and attempt to murder. "On the intervening night of March 4 and 5, Khan looted and killed Munna Lal Yadav and his wife Mithlesh Yadav (both senior citizens) in Bansi Nagar of Shikohabad.
