Dubai Municipality completes $75.4mln Nad Al Sheba 3 drainage project
Dubai Municipality has announced the completion of a sewerage and rainwater drainage network development project in Nad Al Sheba 3, at a total cost of AED277 million.
Serving an area of 340 hectares and encompassing up to 300 plots of land, the project forms part of the Municipality's strategic plans to upgrade and future-proof Dubai's infrastructure, supporting the emirate's vision of becoming a global model for sustainable, smart urban development.
Eng. Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director-General of Dubai Municipality, said, 'This project is part of Dubai Municipality's strategic efforts to develop and deliver world-class infrastructure that keeps pace with Dubai's ambitions for global leadership and urban sustainability. Completing the Nad Al Sheba 3 project is a significant step towards connecting all areas of Dubai to a fully integrated sewerage and rainwater drainage network, ensuring the emirate's readiness to face future climate challenges for the next 100 years. These efforts are part of two of the region's largest strategic infrastructure programmes: the AED30 billion 'Tasreef' project to develop Dubai's rainwater drainage network, and the AED80 billion sewerage system upgrade programme.'
He added, 'Dubai Municipality remains committed to expediting the delivery of integrated development works for sewerage and rainwater collection systems, in line with the highest international standards. By applying advanced technologies and smart solutions, we aim to increase operational performance, ensure service continuity, and improve quality of life for Dubai's residents — reinforcing the emirate's status among the world's leading cities for advanced infrastructure.'
Under the project, Dubai Municipality has provided Nad Al Sheba 3 with an advanced sewerage network spanning approximately 24 kilometres, with pipeline diameters ranging from 200 to 800 millimetres.
This network will enhance public health standards, maintain environmental sustainability, and facilitate more efficient future maintenance works. An additional 11 kilometres of household connections have been constructed to link citizens' homes, new residential units, and other properties directly to the main network.
In terms of rainwater drainage, the Municipality has installed an advanced pumping station with a capacity of 4,000 litres per second, improving rainwater management and ensuring efficient water flow towards the main network. This is complemented by a 31-kilometre gravity-based drainage pipeline network, with diameters ranging from 250 to 1,500 millimetres, which will maintain system readiness during periods of heavy rainfall and mitigate potential flooding risks.

Dubai Basketball to join EuroLeague as 'dream becomes a reality'
Dubai Basketball will join the EuroLeague on a five-year contract from September 2025, just a year after being founded. The competition, regarded as one of the toughest basketball leagues in the world, announced its expansion from 18 to 20 teams in late May. Dubai Basketball has now been confirmed as one of the two new teams to secure a slot to play in the 2025/26 EuroLeague season. In a stellar debut campaign in the ABA League – where the team reached the play-off semi-finals before being halted by Partizan – Dubai Basketball showed the huge potential for the sport in the emirate. Not only did they excel on the court, they made the Coca-Cola Arena their home, attracting crowds in excess of 5,000 fans. 'I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the leadership of Dubai and the Dubai Sports Council for their unwavering support,' Abdulla Saeed Juma Al Naboodah, chairman and Founder of Dubai Basketball, said. 'Their vision and commitment have been instrumental in making the success of Dubai Basketball possible.' The team, under the stewardship of head coach Jurica Golemac, will now take a huge step forward in a competition boasting the elite of European basketball. The move also deepens the UAE's ties with the EuroLeague, with the 2025 finals having been staged at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi in May. Co-Chief Executive Officer Dejan Kamenjasevic said this latest step follows years of hard work to get the project off the ground. 'Dubai Basketball is not an instant project – it has taken us years to reach the point we are in today,' he said. 'But it brings me great pride to say that this team is an instant success [on the court]. Credit goes to our coaches, players and all Dubai Basketball employees who worked hard to convert this dream to a reality. 'Now, with EuroLeague ahead, we have even more to show. We're building something this city has never seen before, and we're excited to make history while growing the Dubai Basketball family.' In just their first season, Dubai Basketball attracted a total of nearly 80,000 fans to Coca-Cola Arena, paving the way for a new era for the sport in the emirate. That fan base is expected to grow next season, with the team's home arena boasting a capacity of 15,000 in its basketball format. Major expansion plan for Burj Khalifa-Dubai Mall Metro Station unveiled
Transport authorities on Sunday launched a major expansion project for the Burj Khalifa-Dubai Mall Metro Station that will increase capacity by more than 5,000 passengers an hour. Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority has joined forces with leading UAE developer Emaar Properties to carry out the large-scale upgrade, to help keep pace with surging passenger numbers amid Dubai's continuing population boom. The number of journeys made at the station – which connects travellers to two popular tourist attractions in Dubai's biggest shopping centre and the world's tallest building – soared from six million in 2013 to more than 10.5 million last year. The scheme will expand the station from 6,700 to 8,500 square metres and enable it to accommodate 12,318 passengers an hour, up from 7,244. The wide-ranging project will feature improvements to entrances and pedestrian bridges to boost access, extending concourse and platform areas, additional escalators and elevators, and separating entry and exit gates to ease passenger movement. The number of fare gates will increase, with more commercial spaces integrated to raise revenue. On track for growth The move comes as ambitious plans to expand the Dubai Metro network gather pace. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, announced this month that work was under way on the emirate's flagship Blue Line project. The public transport master plan is set to transform the north-east of the city, easing traffic congestion and establishing a direct link with Dubai International Airport. The Dh18 billion ($5.17 billion) project – which is to open in 2029 to coincide with the 20th anniversary of Dubai Metro's launch – will include 14 new stations and add 30km to the Metro network, with 15.5km underground. The expansion is part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which has easier commuting among its top priorities, to cater for a fast-growing population. Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority said the Blue Line would connect five principal urban regions of Dubai – Bur Dubai/Deira, Downtown/Business Bay, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Dubai Marina/JBR and Expo City Dubai. When completed, the Metro network will be 131km long and encompass 78 stations served by 168 trains. The number of Dubai Metro passengers is expected to exceed 300 million in 2026 and reach 320 million by 2031, Dubai Media Office has reported. Bolstering Dubai's public transport network is viewed as crucial to efforts to address traffic congestion as the emirate's population increases at a rapid pace. Dubai's population stood at 3.962 million as of Sunday, up from 3.754 million on the corresponding date in 2024.
