Malaysia, Guinea-Bissau deepen ties
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and Guinea-Bissau have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with focus areas including the halal industry, Islamic finance, energy and capacity building.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he had encouraged Malaysian corporations, including Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and FGV Holdings, to explore potential ventures in Guinea-Bissau.
'Hopefully, Petronas, FGV and others will explore potential opportunities not only in Malaysia and Guinea-Bissau, but also use them as a base to expand further into Africa and beyond,' he said during a joint press conference with visiting Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, here today.
Anwar said that Malaysia remains committed to supporting capacity-building efforts through the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP), which offers scholarships and specialised training across sectors including governance, agrotechnology and public administration.
He said discussions with Guinea-Bissau also explored potential collaboration in semiconductors, oil and gas and food technology and the further implementation of MTCP programmes tailored to Guinea-Bissau's developmental priorities.
'We are prepared to offer assistance under the MTCP and through larger programmes coordinated by Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani,' said Anwar.
On international affairs, the Prime Minister highlighted Embalo's strong diplomatic ties with key global powers, including the United Arab Emirates, France, Russia, the United States, and several African nations.
'As a country that practices neutrality and balanced foreign policy, Malaysia and ASEAN have long been involved with nations globally. This aligns closely with President Embalo's vision for Guinea-Bissau,' Anwar said.
The Prime Minister warmly welcomed the deepening of ties between the two nations, adding that, 'Malaysia will be your second home. My colleagues, the people of Malaysia, and I are very pleased that you have taken the initiative to establish a new relationship based on trust and affinity with Malaysia'.
Embalo is currently undertaking a three-day official visit to Malaysia, marking the first-ever visit by a head of state from Guinea-Bissau.

Swiss urge restraint, diplomacy after US strikes on Iran
GENEVA: Switzerland on Sunday urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint and immediately return to diplomacy, after the United States joined Israel's war with Tehran by striking Iranian nuclear sites. 'Switzerland is deeply alarmed by the dangerous escalation between Israel and Iran since June 13, including today's attacks by the US,' the foreign ministry said on its website. 'Switzerland emphasises the importance of full respect for international law, including the UN Charter and international humanitarian law. 'Switzerland urges all parties to exercise the maximum restraint, protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, and immediately return to diplomacy.' Talks took place in Geneva on Friday between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his counterparts from Britain, France, Germany and the European Union. The European powers had urged Tehran to revive diplomatic efforts with the United States to find a solution in the stand-off over its nuclear programme. However, Iran said it could only consider diplomacy once Israel halted its bombardment of the Islamic republic. 'Continued hostilities in the region and clashes between Israel and Iran could rapidly escalate and jeopardise the security of the entire region,' the Swiss ministry said. Switzerland on Friday temporarily closed its embassy in Tehran, but said that it would continue to fulfil its role representing US interests in Iran. US interference has only worsened Iran-Israel conflict, says Anwar
KUCHING: United States interference in the conflict between Israel and Iran has only worsened the crisis in the Middle East, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. Commenting on the recent US military strikes targeting three Iranian nuclear sites, Anwar did not mince his words as he questioned the international community's inconsistency in responding to the conflict. "If we claim to be neutral, there should at least be a call to end all acts of violence. "But why is Israel allowed to act in such a manner while Iran is denied the right to respond?" he told reporters after attending a meeting with Sarawak PKR leadership here today. "Now Iran is under attack and has chosen to fight back. "Unfortunately, the involvement of external powers like the United States is only making matters worse," Anwar added. It was reported that US President Donald Trump had confirmed that the US military launched strikes on Sunday against three Iranian nuclear sites, including the Fordow uranium enrichment plant. Trump was quoted as saying that a full payload of bombs was dropped on the underground facility at Fordow. Anwar said the escalation of violence, including recent attacks and retaliations, would continue unless pressure is placed on Israel to cease its provocative and aggressive actions against other nations. "We have firmly stated that for peace to prevail, Israel must be pressured to stop its provocative and violent actions against others. "When you launch attacks and kill people, there will, of course, be retaliation from Iran." Anwar also expressed concern that the ongoing conflict could lead to the potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which would pose a major threat to the global economy.
