"We are trying to promote cricket here": BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla on scheduling matches in Raipur
Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [India], June 15 (ANI): The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) vice-president Rajiv Shukla said that the board is scheduling two home games for the Indian Cricket Team in Raipur in order to promote cricket in the city.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) held its 28th Apex Council meeting on Saturday, where the venues for the home white-ball series between India and New Zealand were approved.
'We are in favour of promoting cricket in Chhattisgarh. Two matches will be played in Chhattisgarh, one between India and South Africa and the other between India and New Zealand. This is a great achievement for Raipur. We are trying to promote cricket here...,' Rajiv Shukla told the reporters.
The Apex Council confirmed the venues for India's upcoming white-ball home series against New Zealand, scheduled to be held in early 2026. The series will have three ODIs to be held at Baroda (January 11), Rajkot (January 14) and Indore (January 18) and five T20Is to take place at Nagpur (January 21), Raipur (January 23), Guwahati (January 25), Vizag (January 28) and Trivandrum (January 31).
The BCCI Domestic Season 2025-26 was also approved during the meeting. The season will start with the Duleep Trophy (August 28, 2025) and conclude with the Senior Women's Inter-Zonal Multi-Day Trophy (April 3, 2026).
There have been some key changes made to domestic cricket tournaments and structure:
*The Duleep Trophy and Senior Women's Challenger tournaments will now be contested between six zonal teams selected by zonal selectors.
*Plate Group restructuring has been introduced across age categories. The bottom 6 teams (based on the previous season's rankings) will be placed in the Plate Group for limited-overs tournaments.
*Promotion/relegation rules updated: Only one team will be promoted/relegated between Elite and Plate groups going forward.
*Tournament Format Updates: The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Senior Women's T20 Trophy will now include a Super League stage instead of a traditional knockout.
*New Grouping Formats: Major tournaments such as Vijay Hazare Trophy, Senior Women's One Day Trophy, and Men's U23 State A Trophy will follow a 4 Elite Groups + 1 Plate Group model. Most junior and women's tournaments (U16, U19, U23) have moved to a 5 Elite + 1 Plate group structure.
The Apex Council has resolved to establish a Working Group comprising five (5) 'Umpire Coaches' to oversee the development of umpires and enhance their on-field performance. These five 'Umpire Coaches' must possess international umpiring experience and have served as former umpires.
Additionally, the Apex Council has decided to form a Working Group consisting of three (3) former Match Referees. This Working Group will be responsible for monitoring the development of match referees and providing them with opportunities to improve their performance in cricket matches. (ANI)

KL Rahul's 'Unfair Treatment' Called Out By Ex-India Star. Sanjay Manjrekar Contradicts
Former India cricketers Deep Dasgupta and Sanjay Manjrekar had contrasting takes on star batter KL Rahul 's international career, especially Test cricket. Since his debut in 2015, Rahul has played 58 Tests so far, scoring 3,257 runs with a below-par average of 33.57. However, the 33-year-old has not been able to establish himself, be it due to injury or form. However, Dasgupta called out the BCCI for its unfair treatment towards the player. He pointed out Rahul has been made to play at different positions, as per the need of the team. "See, I just hope they give him a permanent position now. He made his debut in 2014. It's been more than a decade, but we still don't know where does he fit into the Indian Test side? Is he a middle-order batter? Is he an opener? I think it's about time to tell him, 'KL, you've got to play this series or whatever, and you're going to play as an opener. This is what you're going to do. And I think once you give him that position, that security, we will see a different KL Rahul," Dasgupta said on Star Sports. Dasgupta suggested it's time for the management to give Rahul a fixed spot, since the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are no longer part of the Test setup. "As of now, in every series,Virat Kohli's absence felt even before first ball is bowled in IND vs ENG Test: 'Moved on from Gavaskar, Sachin but...' it's like KL Rahul is trying to cement his position from one series to the next. You need a wicketkeeper in South Africa, call him. You need a No. 5, call him. Opener? Yes. So that's something I think is being quite unfair on him. It's been a decade now. Come on. Give him that series, maybe more than that and tell him this is how we are looking at you - as an opener - and play him," he added. On the contrary, Manjrekar was of the opinion that Rahul has not shown consistency when it comes to Test cricket. "Am I allowed to contradict? I will be nice. I believe KL Rahul has not shown the kind of consistency that's expected of him at any position. Had this been a guy who averaged 52 as an opener, nobody would dare drop him to No. 4 or 5. Having said that, huge responsibility on him. And Deep, given your assessment of leaving the balls, we'll see how Rahul goes about it today," said Manjrekar.

Sanjay Manjrekar Makes Big 'Pressure' Statement On Shubman Gill, Says: "Nothing To..."
Shubman Gill is all set to become India's youngest captain in the 21st century in the first Test against England, beginning from June 20. Gill, at the age of 25, has been viewed as the long-term captaincy prospect following the retirement of Rohit Sharma from Test cricket. While it is impossible to not carry the weight of expectation on your shoulders, former India cricketer and reputed pundit Sanjay Manjrekar believes that Gill won't feel the pressure. He also suggested that head coach Gautam Gambhir will share a better relationship with Gill than he did with Rohit. "The advantage that Shubman Gill has is that they have nothing to lose. The big names have gone, Jasprit Bumrah is not the captain, it's almost like he had to do the job. So he's not going to feel the pressure," Manjrekar said, speaking on ESPNcricinfo. "Because the selectors have made such a big call, they'll back him and be supportive," Manjrekar added. Manjrekar also explained why he feels Gambhir will enjoy working with Gill. "Gautam Gambhir, as coach, will enjoy a young captain with him. You can see him as coach when he's with Suryakumar Yadav as India captain versus him with Rohit Sharma. There is going to be a better relationship between the captain and the coach," Manjrekar reasoned. Shubman Gill is embracing the challenge of England's ever-changing weather as he prepares to lead India for the first time in a Test series, while senior batter KL Rahul is equally enthusiastic about playing in English conditions. The five-Test series starting at Headingley on Friday marks a generational shift in Indian cricket, with Gill taking over as the new red-ball captain. Veterans Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and R Ashwin are no longer part of the Test setup, having announced their retirements. From the old guard, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Rahul, Rishabh Pant, who is the vice-captain, remain, providing a blend of experience alongside the new leadership group. In a video shared by the BCCI on 'X', several Indian players, including skipper Gill, shared what comes to mind when they think of playing in England. "Dukes ball, that's number one. The weather, which is always changing, that's exciting and tough. And just the atmosphere of the crowd," Gill said. Rahul added: "Playing Test cricket here excites me. The English summer here is different from what we get back home, it's something that I enjoy playing cricket in. When the sun is out it's great to play cricket. The third thing is the options for restaurants and food."

‘What has Abhimanyu Easwaran done wrong?': Fans ask after Sai Sudharsan makes India debut during IND vs ENG 1st Test
Abhimanyu Easwaran's much-anticipated Test debut got extended after the Bengal batter was once again overlooked as India handed Sai Sudharsan his maiden cap on Friday against England in the first Test at Headingly in Leeds. The Tamil Nadu batter was handed his maiden Test cap by veteran Cheteshwar Pujara. The 29-year-old Bengal batter, who has been a prolific run-getter in domestic circuit, has bene travelling with the Indian team since 2022, but is yet to make his place in the starting XI. The right-hander was in terrific form last season as he piled up runs in the Duleep Trophy, Irani Trophy and the Ranji Trophy for Bengal, which included a double hundred and five centuries. Despite that, Easwaran's omission left the fans amazed. 'What has Abhimanyu Easwaran done wrong? So conveniently he gets overlooked for an inexperienced Sai Sudharsan. Think IPL form > domestic performance?' wrote one user on X. 'No disrespect to Sai Sudharshan, he is a good batsman but Abhimanyu Easwaran deserved a debut. How long will you keep him in the touring party and not hand him a Test cap? Abhimanyu is far more experienced,' another user pisted. Having been made the captain of the India A side against England Lions, Easwaran had a good outing in both the unofficial Tests. While he scored a 68 in the first game while opening the batting, Easwaran scored 80 in the second game after being dropped to no.3 spot. On the other hand, Sudharsan's Test debut comes after his Orange Cap finish in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League.
