Temperatures to remain high to start the weekend, but Met Éireann says change is on the way

Today will be mostly dry and similar to recent days, most will enjoy warm temperatures, though the clear weather will give way to a mix of cloud and sunshine. Scattered showers will arrive, mainly in the west of the country, and could turn heavy or thundery during the afternoon. Highest temperatures will be between 19 and 25C. It could be another difficult night's sleep for some as overnight temperatures remain mild, on what will be a mostly dry night with just some scattered showers. Heading towards the morning, cloud and rain will start to form in the west. Lowest temperatures will range from 12 to 15C. The recent bout of summery weather looks set to end on Sunday, when temperatures will begin to drop and there will be cloud and outbreaks of rain in the west and north, though it will remain dry and sunny in the south. It will be 'cooler and breezier than recent days' according to Met Éireann, with highs of 15 to 19C. Met Éireann's outlook for next week is no better with 'generally unsettled' conditions expected. Monday morning will be cloudy with scattered showers before cloud builds up further, bringing more rain, particularly in the southern half of the country. The best of Monday's weather will be in the north of the country, where there will be dry and sunny spells in the evening. Highest temperatures will be between 15 and 19C, though some parts of the south and southeast may reach 20 or 21C. Tuesday will see a 'good deal of cloud' and 'limited sunny spells', though showers will ease off during the day to bring a dry, sunny evening. Highest temperatures will range from 15C in the northwest to 19 or 20C in the south and east. Early signs for Wednesday show a 'wet and breezy day', while the outlook beyond that shows more rainy, breezy conditions further into next week.

Hottest day of the year in Ireland will be followed by huge change in conditions

Ireland recorded its hottest day in three years on Friday, with the mercury hitting 29.6C in Co Roscommon yesterday but a major change is on the way. While today, Saturday June 21, is said to mark the start of summer as the solstice is the longest day of the year, it may actually signal a major downturn in conditions following the recent heat blast. Saturday will remain warm for many places but after today, the weather will turn unsettled as a spell of low pressure brings with it plenty of rain and showers and significantly cooler temperatures. Forecaster Alan O'Reilly, who mans the ever-popular @CarlowWeather account on X, detailed the major change on the horizon as he warned not to trust too many forecasts beyond Tuesday as there is uncertainty for the latter half of next week. "Saturday is going to be pretty warm but not as warm - temperatures over 20C for many parts but it will start to turn cooler in the west and there will be a lot of cloud around," he said. "For those getting up for the summer solstice, it's going to be hit and miss. There's going to be some cloud around but there will be a lot of breaks in it as well. Saturday is the longest day of the year by a second... "We will see some cloud but we will see some sunny spells. There is a risk of a shower. Now that risk is mainly in the afternoon and the evening and more in the Midlands... "Sunday it will turn much cooler. So if you didn't like the warm weather, well the good news for you is that it is going to turn much cooler and fresher. "There will also be a lot of cloud around on Sunday but there will be some sunny spells. There will be a lot more showers Saturday night into Sunday, again some areas especially in the south will see very little. But in the northern half of the country, you could see over 5mm."
