Eddie Murphy says Sidney Poitier urged him not to star in Oscar-nominated film
Eddie Murphy has shared the advice Sidney Poitier gave him after he was approached to star in the 1992 film Malcolm X.
Murphy, 63, who shot to fame on Saturday Night Live before establishing himself as a lead man with starring roles in The Golden Child and Harlem Nights, was steered away from the role by Poitier.
In the new documentary Number One on the Call Sheet: Black Leading Men in Hollywood, Murphy recalled the confusing career advice from the legendary In the Heat of the Night star.
'They were talking about doing Malcolm X [and] Norman Jewison (who directed Fiddler on the Roof and Moonstruck) was putting it together,' he recalled.
'They were gonna use The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Alex Hayley and they approached me about playing Alex Haley.'
Murphy continued: 'Around the same time, I bumped into Sidney Poitier at something and I asked him, 'Yeah, I'm thinking about playing Alex Hayley.' Poitier said, 'You are not Denzel, and you are not Morgan. You are a breath of fresh air, and don't f*** with that,'' the actor recalled, per Entertainment Weekly.
'I didn't know if it was an insult or a compliment,' Murphy admitted. 'I was like, 'What?'' Murphy, Freeman and Washington were all finding their way as Hollywood leading men at the same time.
While Washington was eventually cast in Malcolm X, Murphy went on to star in a series of much-loved comedies, including Boomerang, Nutty Professor and Dr. Dolittle.
Washington won Best Actor at the 1993 Oscars for his role as the civil rights activist in the film ultimately directed by Spike Lee, which did not include Hayley's character despite being based on his book.
When reflecting on why Poitier saw him as a different type of actor to his peers, Murphy said: 'I was in uncharted waters. For Sidney and all those guys, when I showed up, it was something kinda new.
'They didn't have a reference for me, they couldn't give me advice, because I was 20, 21 years old, and my audience was the mainstream – all of everywhere.
'My movies [were] all around the world, and they had never had that with a young Black person. So nobody could give me advice, really. Everything broke really big and really fast.'
Murphy said singer James Brown also offered him a career tip: 'He told me I should stop cursing,' he revealed. 'He said, 'You wanna be in this business for a long time? Stop that cursing.''
Brown also recommended that if Murphy had made a million dollars he bury his money in the woods so the government couldn't take it from him.
'I was like, 'But can't the government take your land?' and he said, 'But they won't know where the money is,' Murphy claimed. 'That's a true story.'
He added: 'That's the kind of advice I used to get. We didn't have a lot of elders.'
Last year, Murphy reflected on how 'racist' jokes were made at his expense on Saturday Night Live in the Nineties, despite him being 'the biggest thing that ever came off that show'.
One such joke occurred when comedian David Spade, as part of his 'Hollywood Minute' sketch, showed a photo of Murphy, stating: 'Look children, it's a falling star. Make a wish.'
Murphy said of the comment: 'It was like: 'Yo, it's in-house! I'm one of the family, and you're f***ing with me like that?' It hurt my feelings like that.'
The actor said the joke 'was personal', adding: 'It was like, 'Yo, how could you do that?' My career? Really? A joke about my career? So I thought that was a cheap shot. And it was kind of, I thought – I felt it was racist.'

James Gunn confirms controversial Superman trailer scene isn't in the final cut

The upcoming DC flick will be released in cinemas on July 8 in the US, and premiering in the UK on July 11 – with Rachel Brosnahan playing Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as villain Lex Luthor. Fans were left devastated after the first teaser dropped in January, and flocked to social media to voice their fears that the latest star to wear the coveted costume looking 'a little off'. In a new interview, the director and DC CEO had his say over the reaction, and how he is 'learning a lot' about how to 'shoot stuff' on set. When asked how much he sees the flick as a 'proof of concept' for what other films in the DCU could look like, the filmmaker insisted: 'I don't think of it like that at all. I just think of it as I'm making another movie. I'm trying to make the best movie I possibly can. And I'm learning a lot. 'This process has been more similar to the first Guardians for me than anything else because I'm learning so much about how to shoot stuff with Superman, which is very different. 'The flying and figuring all that out and figuring out the simplicity and elegance of this character, which is so different from anyone I've ever written a movie for before. I'm learning a lot along the way.' Discussing the backlash to the moments in the trailer showing a bulked-up David flying as Superman, James lifted the lid on how it was filmed, and shared that he didn't 'love' that the footage made it into the teaser. 'It was a TV commercial and it wasn't a finished visual effects shot,' he continued to Entertainment Weekly. 'So the part of him flying, it was a photograph of his face and him flying. It was a photograph of a drone flying in front of an actual background. 'All the pieces were real, but it was incorporated in kind of a funky way. I didn't love the shot, so it's not even the shot that's in the movie. 'Sometimes I'm pretty strict about when I'm going through a trailer and looking at each of the shots, but sometimes the commercials, I forget to look at this closely. So that one kind of got by me.' Moments after the 30-second teaser was released, film lovers were up in arms over the brief shot, questioning why it was filmed that way. Many made their feelings known on social media, branding the footage 'too fake'. 'This shot looks so bad every time. why do filmmakers insist on it?' Reddit user ProtectMeAtAllCosts complained. 'The background plate in Svalbard [a filming location in the Norwegian archipelago] is 100% real as is David.' David was unveiled as the new Superman in 2023, taking over from Henry Cavill. Something happened at the London premiere of Jurassic World Rebirth that caused ripples online. Scarlett Johansson, the star of the film, walked over to her co-star Jonathan Bailey on the red carpet and planted a smooch on his lips. It's worth disclaiming off the bat that Johansson is married to Saturday Night Live comedian Colin Jost, and that Bailey is openly gay. In theory, those disclaimers, and the fact the kiss looked consensual between two close friends and colleagues, should be enough to put the discourse to bed. But, of course, that's not how the digital world works, is it? Photos, videos and memes of Johansson in her pink Vivienne Westwood dress kissing a blazer and baseball cap-wearing Bailey have gone viral. While Vulture covered the story with the title, 'Jonathan Bailey is allowed to kiss your wife.' The Today Show's headline reads, 'Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey kiss on the red carpet and fans approve.' Speaking of fans, one X user wrote: 'Scarlett Johansson just doing what you supposed to do when you have your crush close to you,' and attached a junket video of the actress gushing about her co-star. In the clip, Johansson is speaking to BBC Radio 1 and said, 'I will say my current celebrity crush because I am working with him and he's too cute for words and it's Jonathan Bailey. I absolutely love him. I have such a crush on him.' As such another X user simply posited, 'You know it's #PrideMonth when a hot straight girl kisses a hot gay man.' While a third wrote, 'This new collaboration and friendship warms my heart.' However, the picture was not as positive over on Instagram. Under a clip of the kiss, one person commented: 'So its okay for a married woman to kiss a gay man on the lips? You have some real weird customs in the States not gonna lie.' Another wrote, 'Wait, I'm so confused.' A third comment reads, 'Just because you played in a movie together doesn't give you the right to just kiss each other when you see each other at celebrity events.' If you watch the full clip, which is less than 30 seconds long, Johansson claps excitedly as she spots Bailey on the carpet before walking over and giving him a quick kiss and a longer hug. They both look extremely happy to see each other. The video proves how misleading a still image can be without context. That's not to say public kisses should always be taken at face value or that we should freely give the benefit of the doubt. There have been countless uncomfortable moments over the years where the public and media have been privy to a seemingly non-consensual kiss. Earlier this year, Spain's former football federation boss, Luis Rubiales, was found guilty of sexual assault for kissing the player Jenni Hermoso without consent when Spain won the 2023 Women's World Cup. He was ordered to pay a fine of €10,800 (£8,942). Johansson has even been on the receiving end of an awkward red carpet kiss herself. In 2015, John Travolta planted a peck on Johansson's cheek at the Oscars and in the viral picture she looks somewhat disengaged. However, kisses really do come on a case by case basis. She later released a statement to say the viral photo was taken out of context. 'There is nothing strange, creepy or inappropriate about John Travolta,' she told the Associated Press. 'The image that is circulating is an unfortunate still-frame from a live-action encounter that was very sweet and totally welcome.' She continued, 'That still photo does not reflect what preceded and followed if you see the moment live. Yet another way we are misguided, misinformed and sensationalised by the 24-hour news cycle. I haven't seen John in some years, and it is always a pleasure to be greeted by him.' The reality is any time famous co-stars or contemporaries share a kiss in public – especially if they are not dating – it is bound to spark a conversation. In 2021, Jessica Chastain was forced to respond to her viral PDA moment with her Scenes From a Marriage co-star Oscar Isaac at the Venice Film Festival. While posing for photos together on the red carpet, Isaac grabbed Chastain's arm and kissed her inner bicep. It was met with a similar degree of social media chatter as Johansson and Bailey's moment – particularly because Isaac and Chastain are both married. Chastain responded by tweeting a photo of The Addams Family 's Gomez Addams kissing Morticia Addams' arm, captioning it with a devil emoji and 'Sept 12th' which was the release date of their new show. It also transpired that the pair had been friends for more than 20 years, having first met while studying at Juilliard together. In other words, there was nothing untoward about the bicep kiss, even if it isn't most co-stars' go-to pose. At Cannes this year, Pedro Pascal and Alexander Skarsgard shared their own 'viral kiss' (on the cheek) after Skarsgard's film Pillion received a seven-minute standing ovation. This was equally harmless and sweet, not least because Skarsgard recently became a father with his partner Tuva Novotny and the pair are good friends. Nevertheless, their platonic affection became a talking point. Sometimes it doesn't even have to be a kiss, either. Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, who co-starred in the romcom Anyone But You, are constantly bombarded with questions about the state of their relationship. Despite confirming that they are just friends, their tactile friendship and comfortability gushing about each other is always a source of confusion for fans on social media. It's been almost two years since their film came out and they are still 'shipped' on a weekly basis. In the post #MeToo era, our collective up-tightness around platonic PDA makes sense. If we're going to default to any position, questioning kisses between co-stars or friends who aren't romantically involved seems like a sensible one. However, we mustn't let it warp our sense of what healthy, friendly, reciprocated affection looks like in the process. Not every kiss is suspicious.
