Police uncover courier-assisted drug ring in Penang, seize RM2.1m in narcotics as suspect used juice boxes for MDMA distribution

GEORGE TOWN, May 16 — Penang police have uncovered a drug processing and distribution operation using courier services, seizing an assortment of narcotics worth RM2.1 million in two raids in Butterworth yesterday.
Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the state Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department launched the operation between 9 am and 8 pm, leading to the arrest of a 41-year-old man at the parking lot of a condominium.
'Police raided a unit in the condominium and discovered various types of drugs, including 5,320 grammes of MDMA, 397 sachets of instant drink powder containing MDMA, 384 grams of ketamine, 500 Erimin 5 tablets and 150 ecstasy pills.
'A range of drug-processing and packaging equipment was also seized from the rented unit. The suspect is believed to possess the expertise to process multiple substances into MDMA,' he told a press conference today.
Hamzah said the suspect's modus operandi involved repackaging MDMA into juice boxes or instant beverage sachets for distribution to buyers via various courier services.
Hamzah said the suspect's activities were uncovered following three weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering, which also led police to identify the syndicate supplying him with the drugs.
'The man is unemployed but was living a lavish lifestyle funded by his drug trafficking activities, which began late last year. He also tested positive for drugs and has a prior criminal record,' he said.
Police also seized a luxury Mercedes-Benz vehicle, cash, and seven pieces of gold jewellery, with a combined estimated value of RM170,882.
The suspect has been remanded for seven days until May 22 to assist in investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. — Bernama

New IGP to harness AI in fight against crime

KUALA LUMPUR: Newly appointed Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail has pledged to strengthen the force's capabilities and credibility, particularly in combating cross-border crimes through the use of technology. He expressed hope that the move would steer the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) towards greater heights, in line with the force's modernisation, particularly in adopting the latest technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI). 'To carry out future policing tasks, I believe the use of AI must be given due attention so that our force continues to progress and is able to deal with any form of threat,' he told reporters after the 'Paluan Berundur KPN' farewell ceremony at the Kuala Lumpur Police Training Centre (Pulapol) here today. Mohd Khalid officially assumed duties as the 15th Inspector-General of Police (IGP) today, replacing Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, at a handover of duties ceremony witnessed by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. The event was also attended by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil and senior PDRM officials. JPJ to audit 500 bus and lorry operators from June 23 in special ops

BUTTERWORTH: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will audit 500 operators of public service vehicles (PSV) and high-risk goods commercial vehicles (GCV) through the nationwide JPJ Inspection and Safety Audit special operation, starting Monday (June 23). JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, said the operation was ordered by Transport Minister Anthony Loke to investigate operators to ensure compliance with the audit process stipulated under the Land Public Transport Act. He said the main focus of the operation is to assess the company's compliance level with safety aspects, vehicle maintenance, driver management and compliance records under the Road Transport Act 1987 and related regulations. "It involves the implementation of safety inspection and audit reports that focus on compliance with the industrial code of practice regarding safety in the transportation industry. "Additionally, there will be the review and resolution of outstanding issues for vehicle owners and drivers, as well as compliance with the vehicle technical plan," he said at a press conference after officiating the Penang-level MyLesen B2 Driving Licence Programme 2025 presentation ceremony here on Friday (June 20). Aedy Fadly emphasised that the action was taken following the recent frequent accidents involving heavy vehicles, including the bus crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students on June 9. Commenting further, he said his team had also identified the list of involved companies obtained from Apad and JPJ list through a review of outstanding summonses.
