France honours Bondi Junction stabbing 'bollard' heroes

7NEWS05-06-2025

Armed with bollards and bravery, French nationals Damien Guerot and Silas Despreaux confronted Joel Cauchi amid his stabbing rampage at a busy mall in broad daylight where he killed six dead in five minutes.
They were awarded the Ordre National du Merite, one of France's highest distinctions, on Thursday at NSW parliament for their courageous efforts on April 13, 2024.
Footage of the construction workers coming face to face with the attacker atop an escalator during his killing spree at Westfield Bondi Junction went viral.
Cauchi, who had a history of acute mental health disorders and was off his medication, knifed 10 other victims in the indiscriminate attack before being shot dead by Inspector Amy Scott.
'We were defending ourselves because we were thinking he (Cauchi) was coming after us and the first thing we saw were the bollards,' 32-year-old Guerot said.
Despreaux, 33, who grew in Ukraine as a youngster with his father who was a charity worker, said 'adrenaline' drove them to act swiftly. The tradies were at the mall to buy a new laptop but their day quickly turned into a blood-soaked episode when they saw Cauchi stab a few victims and stood only a few metres away from them before Scott, the lone police officer, killed him.
The fallout from the mass stabbing is being examined in an ongoing coronial inquest.
'In the hour of danger when dozens of lives were at risk... they ran towards the violence, they chose to put their lives on the line,' Premier Chris Minns said.
'The sad and hard truth is we don't know how bad this tragedy could've been without their intervention.
'(You) will always be heroes of this state.'
French Ambassador Pierre-Andre Imbert, who presented the blue coloured medals to the two French friends, praised them for their humility and deliberately staying out of the limelight after the events.
'They acted not out of duty, but out of instinct,' he said.
The pair's actions in attempting to hold back the assailant prompted French President Emmanuel Macron at the time to commend the courage of the compatriots.
They join a long list of renowned recipients of the award in the last six decades including oceanographer Jacques Cousteau and actress Isabelle Huppert.
Guerot confirmed that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese promptly followed through on his promise of granting him permanent residency for saving lives.
Even though Despreaux is eligible for citizenship he is waiting for Guerot to share another crucial milestone together.
When he first came out to Australia, softly spoken Guerot said he brought a small stuffed toy rooster to remind him of France and he has added two more animals that symbolise what he has gone through.
'I have three emblems in my heart — the rooster, the kangaroo and emu — animals that never move backwards. Together they keep me going forward with courage, pride and hope.'

Police called after creepy child bride Disneyland ‘wedding'

A British man has been arrested after he allegedly attempted to stage a fake wedding to a nine-year-old girl at Disneyland Paris. The 22-year-old man was reportedly acting as the 'groom' in the bizarre ceremony, which took place on Saturday morning in front of the famous Sleeping Beauty castle, according to The Sunday Times. Following his arrest, he told police that the spectacle was intended as a video for social media. Disneyland Paris staff became suspicious and alerted authorities after noticing the bride appeared alarmingly young. The presence of her family and a large number of guests also raised concerns. It was later revealed that many of the 'wedding guests' were hired actors who had been transported to the park and given minimal information about the nature of the event. When Seine-et-Marne Police arrived on the scene, they found the child dressed in a bridal dress and wearing four-inch heels that had been taped to her feet. The 'groom' was taken into custody, along with the girl's mother, a 41-year-old Ukrainian woman. Alexandre Verney, Assistant Prosecutor for the Seine-et-Marne region, confirmed that the young girl underwent a medical examination and was found to be unharmed. Mr Verney also confirmed that two Latvian nationals, aged 24 and 55, were arrested in connection with the strange incident. According to local reports, the 55-year-old Latvian told authorities he had been paid €12,000 (AU$21,550) to play the role of the bride's father but only learned the girl's age shortly before the event. The child's mother and the 55-year-old have since been released from police custody, while the British man and 24-year-old Latvian remain detained on suspicion of financial fraud. Authorities believe that Disneyland Paris was misled about the nature of the event, with the organiser assuming the identity of a Latvian national and using fake documents to secure permission to hold a private event at the park. A video obtained by a French news outlet reportedly shows around 100 guests seated as a violin trio performed in front of a flower-adorned stage. One source who claims to have been a wedding guest told a French newspaper that everyone was 'stunned' by what had unfolded. 'We all thought we were going to attend a one expected it,' she said. 'Disneyland did things very well. They cancelled everything as soon as they realised the bride was a child. We were shocked to see that.' A criminal investigation is now underway.

Arrests made after 145 people attacked with syringes at French annual street music festival

French police have detained twelve suspects after 145 people reported being pricked with syringes during the country's annual street music festival, officials said on Sunday. Millions of people took to the streets across France on Saturday evening for the Fete de la Musique, with authorities reporting 'unprecedented crowds' in Paris. Before the party, posts on social media had called for women to be targeted during the festivities. The interior ministry said 145 victims across the country had reported being stabbed with needles. Paris police reported 13 cases in the capital. Officials did not say if these were cases of so-called needle spiking with date-rape drugs such as Rohypnol or GHB, used by attackers to render victims confused or unconscious and vulnerable to sexual assault. 'Some victims were taken to hospital for toxicological tests,' the ministry said. In Paris, investigations were opened after three people including a 15-year-old girl and an 18-year-old male, reported being stabbed in separate incidents across Paris, prosecutors said. All three reported feeling unwell. Across France, 12 suspects have been arrested, the interior ministry said. Among them were four people in the southwestern city of Angouleme suspected of having targeted around 50 victims, said a police source. Apart from those suspects, more than 370 people were detained during the festival on various charges, including nearly 90 people in Paris. Fourteen participants in the festivities were seriously injured, including a 17-year-old hospitalised after being found sitting on the street with stab wounds to the lower abdomen. Thirteen members of law enforcement were also injured. The prefect of the Paris police, Laurent Nunez, said that 'no major incident has been reported'. — With Agence France-Presse

Goult: Bride gunned down, groom and child injured as masked gunmen open fire at reception

A joyful wedding celebration turned to horror after a bride was shot dead and her groom and a child were injured after masked gunmen opened fire at their reception. The newlyweds were in a car leaving their reception in the small French village of Goult around 4.30am when they were attacked. The 27-year-old bride was killed, as was one of the four assailants, who was reportedly run over by the bride and groom's car as it reversed trying to escape the gunfire. The 25-year-old groom and a 13-year-old boy, believed to be the couple's child, who were in the car, received serious injuries. The bride's sister was also injured in the attack. It is understood the gunmen arrived by car with several weapons and fled on foot after the attack, which insiders believe could have been drug-related score settling. 'I'm angry. I'm outraged,' Goult Mayor Didier Perello said. Mr Perello did not rule out drug links to the crime, CBS reports . 'I'm ruling nothing out. Absolutely nothing,' he said. 'We're close to towns, I won't name them, where unfortunately, we've already seen this kind of thing before.' Le Parisien reports that while the bride was unknown to police, the groom has a long history of criminal conspiracy and drug violations. The attack happened at the village hall, which had been booked by the couple in March. Police say 28 people were present when the gunmen opened fire. A manhunt is now underway to find those behind the attack. 'Research has been conducted to verify whether the people responsible could still be in the town,' Mr Perello said.
