GFL cancels first two events as uncertainty swirls around future of new MMA promotion

Independent10-04-2025

The GFL has reportedly cancelled its first two events, as the new MMA promotion struggles to get off the ground.
The Global Fight League, which launched earlier this year, signed numerous former UFC fighters before announcing it would stage its first two cards this spring.
The original plan was seemingly to open their inaugural season in April, but the opening events were delayed until 24 and 25 May – and now they have been cancelled entirely, per Uncrowned and MMA Fighting.
California State Athletic Commission executive director Andy Foster confirmed the news to the outlets.
Tony Ferguson, Urijah Faber, Alexander Gustafsson, Holly Holm and Anthony Pettis were among the many UFC veterans due to compete in Los Angeles.
Chad Mendes, Paige VanZant, Thiago Santos, Renan Barao and Derek Brunson were also set to be involved, among others.
It is unclear whether the events in question will be rescheduled or the GFL's opening season has collapsed entirely.

Dana White makes public donation appeal to support Ben Askren with former MMA fighter needing life-saving lung transplant after severe pneumonia fight

Dana White has issued a public appeal in support of Ben Askren, who remains in hospital after being diagnosed with severe pnuemonia earlier this month. Askren, 40, was hospitalised after contracting pneumonia as a result of a staph infection and he now requires a life-saving lung transplant. He was unresponsive last week but alive, despite claims circulating online that he had died. Askren was transferred to his home town of Wisconsin to receive treatment, according to UFC commentator and former two-division champion Daniel Cormier. This came after Askren's wife, Amy Askren, provided an update on his concerning condition, saying he was bed-bound in care. She revealed earlier this week that her husband remains in hospital on a ventilator. 'His body can't handle coming off sedation too much yet,' she posted on Facebook. 'I'm still praying for a miracle with his current lungs, but they are currently starting the evaluation process for a lung transplant.' UFC CEO White is hopeful kind-hearted UFC fans will be able to donate, and he shared the link to the fundraiser with his 10.5million Instagram followers. 'Click the link to help Ben Askren,' White said. According to the National Institutes of Health, the cost of a lung transplant in the United States ranges from $300,000 (£222,915) to $400,000 (£297,220). Askren retired from MMA in 2019 after a three-fight stint with the UFC. He made his MMA debut in 2009 after a decorated collegiate wrestling career that saw him become a two-time NCAA division 1 champion. The 2008 Olympian would go on a decade-long undefeated streak inside the cage, winning world titles in Bellator and ONE and was widely regarded as one of the best fighters in the world outside the UFC. Despite a fractious relationship with White, Askren would make his Octagon debut in 2019 after a trade deal involving former flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson. Amy shared an update on social media and revealed that there are 'good days and bad' After defeating Robbie Lawler in his UFC debut, Askren suffered back-to-back losses against Jorge Masvidal and Demian Maia before announcing his retirement. Despite undergoing major hip surgery after hanging up his gloves, Askren later returned to competition, losing to Jake Paul via first-round TKO in a boxing match.

Tom Aspinall installed as UFC champion after Jon Jones confirms retirement

Britain's Tom Aspinall has been upgraded to UFC undisputed heavyweight champion following the official retirement of Jon Jones. UFC president Dana White ended months of uncertainty in the heavyweight division by delivering the news after Saturday's Fight Night in Azerbaijan. Advertisement Aspinall spent 19 months as interim champion and is only the third Briton to become a UFC champion. American Jones – considered one of the greatest mixed martial arts fighters of all time – had not competed since defeating Stipe Miocic in November. 'Jon Jones called us last night and retired,' White said. 'Jon Jones is officially retired. Tom Aspinall is the heavyweight champion of the UFC. Advertisement 'Do I regret the time that I gave (Jones to decide)? Listen, if you look at what he's accomplished in the sport, no.' Aspinall had unsuccessfully campaigned to fight 37-year-old Jones. Reacting to the news, the 32-year-old, who last fought in July, posted on Instagram: 'For you fans, it's time to get this heavyweight division going. An active undisputed champion.' Aspinall is expected to defend his title this summer or in early autumn, with number-one contender Ciryl Gane a likely opponent. 'I obviously feel bad for Tom that he lost all that time and obviously money, but we'll make it up to him,' said White. 'Tom Aspinall's a good guy. He's been incredible through this whole process. 'He's been willing to do anything, fight him (Jones) anywhere at any time and do this, and now he's like 'I'll fight anybody – you tell me who and I'll fight them'.'

And Lineker launched a staunch defence of his employee in a since-deleted Instagram post slamming McGregor's antics. It read: "Thought about this post a lot. But the former fan favourite is seemingly hellbent on making the walk to the octagon again.
