Real-world, real-big Final Fantasy Black Mage hat on sale for fans of magical fashion and Vivi

SoraNews2427-04-2025

Square Enix brings the hat of Final Fantasy IX's fan favorite sorcerer to our reality.
It can be tricky to explain to non-fans how there are 16 games in the mainline Final Fantasy series, spanning 36 years, and yet none of them are direct sequels to another. But while the stories and settings of those mainline numbered installments are all independent of one another, the shared themes, gameplay systems, musical cues, and visual motifs tie the series' installments to one another.
For example, a recurring character class in Final Fantasy is the Black Mage, who, starting from the original Final Fantasy in 1987, can be identified by a tall, wide-brimmed hat that obscures the wearer's face while marking them as a user of offense-oriented magic. It's one of the most distinctive costume designs in the entire RPG genre, and now it's something you can make part of your wardrobe in the real world too.
While the Black Mage hat makes multiple appearances across the Square Enix franchise, dedicated Final Fantasy fans are likely getting an extra-strong hit of nostalgia here. The hat's design is modeled specifically after the one worn by Vivi, the shy, purehearted Black Mage with a tragic backstory from Final Fantasy IX, currently celebrating the 25th anniversary of its release for the original PlayStation and often cited by Final Fantasy original creator Hironobu Sakaguchi as his favorite game in the series.
Bitmapped graphics were still the norm in video games when the first Final Fantasy came out, and so the Black Mage hat wasn't originally designed with much concern over how the headwear would fit in three-dimensional spaces. That's something you'll need to take into consideration with the real-world Vivi's hat, however, which is listed as having a height of 72 centimeters (28.3 inches) and a brim width of 14 centimeters extending from the central cone, so you might want to be careful if your quest for the day is taking you somewhere with low ceilings or doorways.
Vivi's Black Mage Hat is available for preorder now through the Square Enix e-store here, priced at 17,600 yen (US$121) with shipping scheduled for mid-August, which suggests it should be in fans' hands/on fans' heads by Halloween.

Starbucks Japan releases exclusive new Mango Au Lait for summer

By Oona McGee, SoraNews24 Starbucks has gone totally fruity this summer, starting the season with strawberries before setting them aside for mangoes as the star ingredient on the menu. While the limited-edition Frappuccinos are currently stealing the limelight, diehard fans will be seeking out a more understated new beverage called the Mango Au Lait, which focuses on simplicity to allow the fruit to shine. Made with only milk and fruit pulp, this is a drink that's bound to explode in popularity as the weather heats up. Not only is it refreshing, but the simplicity makes it super easy to drink. While it's usually served without cream, in-store baristas recommend customising it with whipped cream for an additional 55 yen and a free sprinkling of cinnamon powder, so we went with their advice and were glad we did, as the spice added an exotic aroma to the mix. With mango pulp at the bottom of the cup, and blended into the milky body, this is a drink that lets you enjoy full-on mango flavour when you sip it as is. Stirring the mixture together, however, creates a mellower, creamier experience with a sweetness that becomes more pronounced in every sip. The simplicity makes the drink suitable for a wide variety of customisations, and the cinnamon tuned out to be a perfect partner for mango, adding a dash of extra flavor to excite the taste buds right through to the very last sip. This is the kind of easy-to-drink beverage that you'll want to order again and again, so it's a good idea to alternate between the standard version and a few customisations while it's available until July 8. Priced at 590 yen, this is a great alternative to the more well-known drinks on the menu, and a nice palate cleanser for the super spicy Hot Honey Oriental Mango & Tea Frappuccino, which is currently burning mouths around the nation. Test your might in forehead flicking with Decopin Buster

No need to use your head anymore for this simple game. On 15 December 2023, baseball phenom Shohei Ohtani held his first press conference as a member of the LA Dodgers. It was a joyous event for the future World Series winning team and Ohtani's spirits were also high as he introduced his pet dog to the world. Perhaps in honor of his international success, his dog actually has two names 'Decoy' in English and 'Dekopin' in Japanese. ▼ Decoy/Dekopin has been a regular fixture in Dodger Stadium ever since. The word ' dekopin ' is a combination of the words ' deko ' which can mean 'forehead' and ' pin ' which is very similar to the English word 'ping' to simulate a sharp impact, making ' dekopin ' translate to something like 'forehead ping.' It's a common act of playful childhood roughhousing along the lines of noogies and could be used as punishment for losing a game like rock, paper, scissors. The euphoria at the time surrounding Ohtani's new home, recent marriage, and adorable dog spread like wildfire in Japan. The craze got so big that even Hac Co., Ltd. in Osaka, the maker of Dekopin Buster, or 'Decopin Buster' as they stylize it, benefitted without having anything at all to do with Ohtani or his dog. ▼ Right now, I can hear you thinking, 'You don't mean the same Hac that makes the remote control turds, do you?' Yes, the very same. As Dekopin fever took hold, a lot of attention fell on Decopin Buster. It was featured in several YouTube videos and sold like hot cakes might have if they were called 'dekopin cakes.' Hac was only now finally able to produce more Decopin Busters and released them again on 18 June for 4,680 yen (US$32) each. Decopin Buster works just like one of those punching machines found in bars or game centers, only instead of punching the padded arm, you must flick it hard enough to get a high score. It also comes with mission cards and penalty cards to add some depth to competitive dekopinning. We actually got a Decopin Buster in a Village Vanguard lucky bag similar to this one, back during its original run in late 2023. However, batteries were sold separately so we couldn't test it in time for the article. It looked pretty fun though. Worry no longer about your next game of paper football or marbles. With Decopin Buster you can hone your flicks to levels never thought possible. I did and now every time I flick a mosquito off my arm, it completely atomizes. 7-Eleven's new anko butter burrito un-bean-lievably bad, or burrito bliss?

By Krista Rogers, SoraNews24 Burritos aren't all that common in Japan, to the point that one of our Japanese-language reporters had never eaten one until last year. Therefore, we're always intrigued whenever a common chain like 7-Eleven Japan announces that a new burrito product is joining the ranks, like one did on June 11. The An Butter Burrito, which is currently retailing for 302 yen, isn't a typical burrito filled with pinto beans or black beans, but rather with anko (sweetened red bean paste) and butter instead. It's solidly in the Japanese fusion-food category, similar to many of the chain's burritos of the past. We were insanely curious to try this new offering, whose main ingredient is more of a traditional Japanese dessert than a meal, so we grabbed one from our local store and brought it home. Its label stated that the high-quality tsubuan (coarse sweetened red bean paste) filling was sourced from the Tokachi district of Hokkaido. After popping it in the microwave, we took a generous bite. While the butter didn't really have much of an aroma, it was solidly reflected in the taste (actually, we wouldn't have minded even more!). The combination of sweet anko and moderately salty butter in a springy tortilla was simply divine. Despite using tsubuan, which retains some of the lumpiness of the red beans, the filling felt smooth. Rather, it mainly seemed melty and sticky, more like koshian (strained sweetened red bean paste). All in all, it was quite satisfying and will be perfect for whenever the desire to fill ourselves up with something sweet strikes. Well, that's a wrap on 7-Eleven's new An Butter Burrito. If you're still craving more Japanese fusion burritos, luckily there are plenty to be found, from sushi to okonomiyaki varieties.
