Karan Johar criticises Bollywood's herd mentality: We need unique ideas

India Today11-06-2025

Filmmaker Karan Johar reacted to the herd mentality prevalent in Bollywood. He emphasised how successful films such as 'Pushpa', 'Stree' and 'Chhaava' created a mimicking trend within the film industry. While speaking about the lack of originality, he also expressed his views on cinematic universes.Johar highlighted the most concerning issue with Bollywood and stated that after 'Stree', everyone only wants to make horror comedies. He stressed how most filmmakers are "grappling to do what others are doing". The film-maker, in an interview with Bollywood Hungama said, "I think it is everybody grappling to do what others are doing."advertisement"We see 'Pushpa' running and catering so strongly to the tier-2 and tier-3 audiences. Suddenly, we will see 20 others wanting to do the same. You see 'Chhaava' working, everybody would want to make historicals," he added.
Johar further said, "'Stree' and everybody wants to make horror comedies. Those worked because they were individually strong, and there was no other option in that genre. It was a unique thought that made those films work."The filmmaker, while expressing his opinion on unique ideas, said that he has not backed any spy or cop universe as he feels he is "not here to build universes." Johar said, "We all need to have individual thoughts that are unique to ourselves.""Someone asked me the other day, 'Do you have a universe?' I was like, 'As in?' They were like, 'A spy universe or a cop universe.' I was like, 'My universe is cinema itself.' I am not here to build universes, I am here to tell stories. In that story, if there's a universe, then why not," he added.advertisementJohar's next production is the romantic-drama 'Dhadak 2', featuring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri in lead roles. The film is a spiritual sequel to 'Dhadak' (2018), which marked the debut of Ishaan Khatter and Janhvi Kapoor.'Dhadak 2' is scheduled for release on August 1, 2025.Trending Reel

Sudhanshu Pandey On KJo's The Traitors: ‘No Phone, No WiFi, It Was Peaceful'

Last Updated: Sudhanshu Pandey shared that the experience in The Traitors was meditative, as there were no phones, no internet and just one TV. Sudhanshu Pandey has stayed away from television since he exited Anupamaa. After leaving the daily soap, he wanted to try something different. Now, he's back in action as a contestant on The Traitors, a reality show hosted by Karan Johar, where he's competing with 19 others. At first, the show may seem like something out of his comfort zone, but Sudhanshu actually found it very peaceful. He shared that the experience was 'meditative," as there were no phones, no internet and just one TV. This gave him a chance to observe others closely and think more about human nature. In a recent conversation with ETimes, the actor speaking about the experience on the show and what he's learnt so far, he said, 'It was a very meditative space to be in because we would play the whole day and then go back to our rooms at night and be just completely by yourself. There was only one TV, there was no internet, there was nothing, there was no phone, there was no WiFi. So you were completely disconnected." 'I was observing everybody there and how they behave. They were splitting their personality every other second. You realise, there are all sorts of people there. So, it makes you sit and observe the kind of people around you or what kind of people are they growing into. It was a great observation class for me and a great vacation, I would say," Sudhanshu Pandey explained. The Anupama star feels that for Karan Johar, hosting The Traitors must have been tough for him. Since the filmmaker enjoys talking and connecting with people, staying silent and serious for a show like this was not easy for him. He had to hold back his usual energy and remain calm. Sudhanshu also spoke about why he doesn't expect to have fights with anyone on the show. He explained that he always treats people with respect, and because of that, he usually gets the same respect back. Sudhanshu Pandey further explained that he didn't plan any special strategy for the show. He decided to just be himself and act naturally, without pretending or showing any fake image. For him, a reality show is meant to show the true side of a person. Since he has been in the industry for many years, he feels this is a good chance for the audience to see his real side. He wants people to connect with the real version of him. Other than Sudhansu Pandey, The Traitors also feature Anshula Kapoor, Apoorva Mukhija, Ashish Vidyarthi, Elnaaz Nourouzi, Harsh Gujral, Jannat Zubair, Janvi Gaur, Jasmine Bhasin, Karan Kundrra, Lakshmi Manchu, Maheep Kapoor, Mukesh Chhabra, Nikita Luther, Purav Jha, Raftaar, Raj Kundra, Sahil Salathia, Sufi Motiwala and Uorfi Javed. Sitaare Zameen Par Box Office Collection Day 1: Aamir Khan-starrer sees slow start; mints THIS amount

Sitaare Zameen Par Box Office Collection Day 1: Aamir Khan's film Sitaare Zameen Par is predicted to have a slow start at the box office. The film was released on Friday. Directed by RS Prasanna, it is the spiritual sequel of Taare Zameen Par. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Sitaare Zameen Par made a business of ₹ 4.76 crore on Friday, June 20. It is to be noted that this is the live data from the website and subject to changes. The final figures will be out post 10 pm. The Aamir Khan movie was reported to release in theatres with over ₹ 6 crore business on day 1 if advance booking is considered. As per the website, the film had sold 1,15,344 tickets for 9,542 shows in all languages nationwide in advance booking. Without blocked seats, the Aamir Khan sequel was poised to make a business of ₹ 3.31 crore from advance booking ticket sales. In total, the film was said to open with ₹ 6.88 crore gross earnings, including blocked seats. The film is following a strictly theatrical release policy which means it might not see its OTT release soon or ever. The film is also experimenting with several new strategies, as per a report of Bollywood Hungama. It is majorly clashing with Akshay Kumar's Housefull 5, which has now slowed down at the ticket window. Talking about Sitaare Zameen Par's box office performance trends and early estimates, film trade analyst Taran Adarsh told Live Mint that Aamir's film will rely on word-of-mouth. He said, "The advance booking is not in sync with the star status of Aamir Khan. Yes, the advances should have been better because Aamir Khan returns to the big screen after a big gap with his own production, starring in it. It should have been better. I genuinely believe Sitaare Zameen Par is a word-of-mouth film. It should grow with word of mouth.' Going by the early reviews from the audience, the film has been dubbed as a 'well-intentioned film.' Critics reviews also hailed Aamir Khan's performance in the film. Sitaare Zameen Par is said to be the Hindi remake of the 2018 Spanish film, Campeones. Besides Aamir, it also has Genelia D'Souza. It also features 10 special actors who marked their acting debut on this Friday.
