Double-decker bus driver who killed nine-year-old girl after ploughing into her while high on drugs is jailed
A double-decker bus driver who killed a nine-year-old child after crashing into her while high on drugs has been jailed for four years.
Martin Asolo-Agogua, 23, had been up all night at a social event when he ploughed into Ada Bicakci and her five-year-old brother.
The horror unfolded at around 9.05am on August 3, 2024, on Watling Street in Bexleyheath, southeast London, a court heard.
Asolo-Ogugua was today sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court for causing the death of Ada, a Turkish and British national, by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drugs.
He was also disqualified from driving for seven years.
Asolo-Ogugua, of Banfield Road, Southwark, fell asleep at the wheel, having taken cannabis the previous night.
He mounted the opposite pavement at the exact moment Ada was riding her bike across it with her family.
The siblings, who were with a family member at the time, were immediately taken to hospital where Ada, who was a 'keen gymnast and swimmer' died two days later.
Detective Sergeant Sam Miles, who led the investigation, said: 'Asolo-Ogugua will have to spend the rest of his life regretting the night he chose to stay awake before getting behind the wheel of a bus with cannabis in his system.
'It's a night that has cost him his freedom and snatched away the life of an innocent little girl.
'Ada had her whole life ahead of her.
'She lived in the area and attended a local primary school where she was a popular and happy pupil.
'In a remarkable show of courage and humility, Ada's family chose to take her life forward to help others by donating her organs.
'I can only hope today's sentence brings some closure for Ada's family who have remained a pillar of strength throughout these proceedings.'
Police were called to the scene at Watling Street near the junction with Halcot Avenue in Bexleyheath at 09:03hrs on Saturday, 3 August 2024 where a bus had collided with two children, causing what paramedics described as life-threatening injuries to a little girl.
Ada's family managed to jump to safety, but Ada was left with catastrophic injuries.
Ada was taken to hospital but, despite the best efforts of medical staff, she sadly died on the afternoon of Monday, 5 August.
Her family have continued to be supported by specialist officers.
Ada's father, Bora, said: 'The images of that horrific moment remain seared into my mind. That scene replays endlessly, a constant reminder of the day my world fractured beyond repair.
'This tragedy happened on my watch, a father's ultimate failure. My world has been turned upside down, and with it, the foundations of my family have crumbled.
'My darling Ada. Our thanks are not enough to show our gratitude for you. We will honour your name with acts of magnitude. You will never be forgotten.
'We will make this story one of love and thanks that we owe everybody. Your presence, and passing, will leave a mark in this country and we will fight to make drug driving a part of its history.'
Senior Crown Prosecutor, Miranda Jollie, of the Crown Prosecution Service, said:
'Asolo-Ogugua was reckless and utterly selfish to get behind the wheel of a bus after consuming drugs and put many lives at risk that day.
'His actions have robbed a young girl of her entire life. Our thoughts remain with Ada's family and friends as they try to come to terms with their unimaginable loss
'I hope his sentence today can help to bring some closure for Ada's family and highlight the devastating consequences of drug driving.'
Following the tragedy, a GoFundMe page was launched to provide support to the police and ambulance service who had helped the nine-year-old, with more than £14,000 accumulated in donations.
The family also donated her organs to other children, with her parents receiving a commendation from Anthony Clarkson, the Director of Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation.
A statement on behalf of the Bacakci family, shared on the fundraising page, read: 'We have been hit and shattered into pieces, one became six, living in new places.
'Thanks are not enough to show our gratitude. We'll honour Ada with acts of magnitude.

Reckless cyclists who kill or seriously injure pedestrians will face tougher sentences in line with motoring offences. Under changes to the Crime and Policing Bill, a cyclist who kills someone by riding dangerously could face life in prison. Causing serious injury by dangerous cycling – or causing death by careless or inconsiderate cycling – could be met with five years in prison, a fine or both. A serious injury caused by careless or inconsiderate cycling could result in a two-year prison sentence, a fine or both. The law change, which cleared the Commons this week, includes legal e-bikes as well as pedal cycles, the Government said. The Tories agreed to change the law after campaigning by Conservative grandee Iain Duncan Smith – only for it to fall foul of the early general election last year. Sir Iain has worked with Matthew Briggs, whose wife Kim died from head injuries after a collision with a cyclist in London in 2016. Charlie Alliston, who was riding a fixed-gear bike with no front brake, was found guilty of causing bodily harm by 'wanton or furious driving' – a crime under the 1861 Offences Against the Person Act – but cleared of manslaughter. Sir Iain said the change in the law would mean that for the first time there would be specific punishments for 'reckless, dangerous cycling causing injury or death'. The Bill includes e-bikes, which he said were becoming a 'major nightmare' for police, with crimes being committed using them as well as being ridden dangerously. Sir Iain said he hoped the legislation would make it 'worthwhile' for police to arrest someone for such offences. 'Now you have very specific criminal offences at those who misuse and damage people's lives and kill them,' he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme. 'That will now be a specific crime, and will include e-bikes – riding on pavements, smashing into people, causing problems – that becomes a criminal offence.' The Government said it was changing the law to ensure there is an 'appropriate framework of offences to punish dangerous and careless behaviour that results in serious harm to other road users'. The Ministry of Justice said the new offences 'introduce penalties equivalent to those in place if the same level of harm is caused by drivers of other vehicles'. In 2023, four pedestrians were killed and 185 seriously injured after being hit by a cyclist, according to government figures. On average, three pedestrians have been killed per year by cyclists over the past decade.

LIONESS goalie Khiara Keating will face no further action after she was hauled to court accused of a drugs offence. The Manchester City star, 20, was charged with possession of nitrous oxide canisters. She and her mum appeared at Manchester magistrates court last summer when they pleaded not guilty. They were facing a trial in November and were due at a hearing last week. But the case has been dropped owing to insufficient evidence. A MISS Universe finalist has shared pics of her horror injuries after her ex was cleared of assault. Chloe Othen, 34, had been invited over to Ricky Lawrence's home in Knightsbridge, London, when "all hell broke loose", a court heard. 8 8 8 8 The Miss Universe finalist claimed she was pinned down by Lawrence and accused him of punching and biting her on her legs, arm and shoulder, jurors heard. Chloe, an Instagram influencer with 284,000 followers, said she "feared she would die" at the 33-year-old's £1.5million apartment. But Lawrence, who runs Lawrence & Winslade bespoke tailors in Knightsbridge, denied the charges and was cleared of assault causing actual bodily harm after an eight-day retrial. Whisky merchant Lawrence was accused of punching Chloe multiple times but was found not guilty having insisted a love rival beat her up. He claimed her current partner Hatton Garden jeweller Bora Guccuk, 41, was responsible for Chloe's injuries. Now, Chloe has taken to Instagram with her latest post referencing the ordeal. The defence lawyer said no one was suggesting Chloe was not assaulted but claimed Guccuk was responsible for her injuries. Mr Wyatt added: "She couldn't risk losing the man who paid for her lifestyle." Francesca Allen, 28, who appeared on series five of Love Island, dated Lawrence in 2018 and wrote a character statement as part of Lawrence's defence. Following his initial arrest, Lawrence had wept and said: "This is ridiculous. She's ruining my life. I asked her to leave."
