KHALED AL KHAWALDEH (ABU DHABI) Abu Dhabi has emerged as one of the world's most admired cities, ranking second globally in resident satisfaction, according to Gensler's newly released City Pulse 2025 findings. The report aims to provide an alternative metric for measuring emotional connection alongside factors like liveability and economic opportunity. The City Pulse 2025 report — based on insights from over 33,000 residents across 65 cities on six continents — found that 92% of Abu Dhabi residents were 'satisfied' or 'very satisfied' with their city, the second highest after Shanghai. Dubai ranked fourth with a score of 91%. 'UAE cities are some of the most admired globally for their quality of infrastructure and ambition,' said Tim Martin, Co-Managing Director and Principal at Gensler Middle East.
Finding a Sense of Home Gensler's analysis suggests that satisfaction alone does not equate to loyalty. Residents are most likely to stay in places that not only provide top-class amenities but also those that foster strong emotional ties, including joy, pride, and a sense of home.'If the last two decades were about building world-class infrastructure, the next era must be about building world-class belonging,' Martin added. 'A truly magnetic city is one people don't just move to — it's one they stay in, raise families in, and feel deeply connected to. That's the opportunity for the UAE.'Martin said this insight is especially relevant for Abu Dhabi as it aligns with national strategies like 'We the UAE 2031 and Vision 2071', both of which aim emphasise human-centric growth and talent retention. He highlighted that the country had already taken proactive steps through Golden Visa programmes and innovation clusters designed to attract global talent. Gensler's report frames cities not just as economic engines but as 'emotional ecosystems.'Their findings show that one in three people globally is considering leaving their city, and the most important factor keeping them rooted isn't job opportunities or public services — it's whether they feel emotionally at home.Despite its success, Martin cautioned that Abu Dhabi was not immune to global trends. The report highlights affordability as the top global factor influencing residents' decisions to move. With rising living costs, even cities with high satisfaction scores must address economic inclusion to maintain long-term appeal, the report said. Gensler said that for Abu Dhabi, this means expanding beyond traditional infrastructure metrics and investing in community cohesion, accessible housing, and inclusive design that invites all residents to participate in city life.'As we look to the future, especially with Vision 2071 and 'We the UAE 2031' in mind, the challenge is not just to attract talent, but to root it,' Martin said.
'Long-term city vitality will depend on how emotionally connected residents feel, to their neighbourhoods, to public life and to the idea of staying for decades.'

Meta's ‘Teen Accounts' in UAE explained: Stricter privacy rules rolled out for under-16 Instagram users

22 June 2025 22:18 Khaled Al Khawaldeh (Abu Dhabi) Meta has launched its 'Teen Accounts' feature for Instagram in the UAE, positioning the nation as one of the first in the region to benefit from enhanced online safety measures for adolescents. The move reflects the UAE's commitment to advancing digital wellbeing as part of its broader vision for a safe and balanced digital society. The rollout, announced during a youth-focused summit in Dubai last week, aligns closely with national efforts to promote online safety among the youth. How Does It Work? Instagram Teen Accounts introduce a range of built-in safeguards specifically designed to protect users under the age of 16. Among the key features are stricter privacy controls that automatically set teen profiles to private, ensuring that only approved followers can view posts and interact with their messaging is also limited so that teens can receive messages only from followers they have accepted. Sensitive content filters are set at the highest restriction levels, shielding teens from violent, sexual, or harmful material. Additionally, new interaction settings prevent strangers from tagging or mentioning teen users. These changes are aimed at reducing exposure to potentially harmful or inappropriate online encounters. Another notable feature is the introduction of time management tools. Teens in the UAE will now see prompts encouraging them to take breaks after 60 minutes of daily usage. Notifications are automatically silenced overnight, between 10 pm and 7 am, to support healthy digital habits and better sleep hygiene.'Instagram Teen Accounts reflect the importance of tailoring teens' online experiences to their developmental stages, and implementing appropriate protections,' Rachel Rodgers, PhD Associate Professor of Applied Psychology, Northeastern University, said in a statement.'Younger adolescents are more vulnerable as their skills are still emerging and require additional safeguards and protection. Overall, the settings are age-specific, with younger and older teens being offered different protections.' Digital Safety DriveThe UAE's inclusion in this regional-first rollout underscores its leadership in online safety initiatives, according to Lt. General His Highness Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, during the feature's announcement. The country has been at the forefront of digital governance through initiatives like the National Programme for Digital Wellbeing, led by the Digital Wellbeing have long emphasised the need to protect children and teenagers from the risks associated with excessive or unsafe social media use. The collaboration between Meta and local stakeholders, including government bodies, educators, and parent advocates, is seen as a natural extension of these efforts. Parents' Involvement While Teen Accounts automatically introduce new protections, many parents in the UAE are eager to take a more active role in their children's online experiences. In response, Meta is enhancing its supervision tools to give families greater oversight. Parents will now be able to see who their teen has messaged over the past seven days, though they won't have access to the content of those conversations. They can also set daily time limits for how long their teen can use Instagram, with the app becoming inaccessible once the limit is reached. In addition, parents have the option to block Instagram usage during specific periods, such as nighttime hours, with a single click. To further support informed guidance, Meta is also allowing parents to view the age-appropriate topics their teen has selected to explore, helping them better understand their child's online interests and preferences. What If Teens Misrepresent Their Age? Some teens may attempt to bypass protections by misrepresenting their age. To address this, the company is requiring age verification in more places across the platform and is developing technology to proactively identify accounts that belong to teens, even if those accounts list an adult birth date. This technology will allow Meta to automatically apply Teen Account protections to suspected underage users. The strategy replaces an earlier measure that required age verification for accounts attempting to switch to an adult birthday, which had unintended consequences, such as inadvertently locking out some parents who shared devices with their teens. Alongside these enforcement efforts, Meta is also enhancing its safeguards to ensure teens see age-appropriate content. The platform applies strict rules to remove content that violates its standards and limits the recommendation of sensitive material, including sexually suggestive posts or content related to suicide, self-harm, or sextortion risks.

UAE will attract more millionaires as Emirates remains safest country despite regional war

The UAE will continue to attract high net-worth individuals despite the regional Israel-Iran war as the Emirates is still the safest country to park money, according to international migration consultants and wealth managers. 'I have seen how UAE becomes always a stronger magnet in a time of crisis in the region and geopolitically around the world because of the infrastructure, the safety nets, the rule of law, the quality of life and low tax. I think that in case of any regional problems, the UAE will benefit as the best and safest hub,' said Armand Arton, CEO of leading immigration investment firm Arton Capital. In an interview with Khaleej Times, he stated that he expected the UAE to continue attracting even more millionaires than it had in the last five years. 'The Russia-Ukraine war was the last big wave of wealth that came in. After that, the taxation in the UK and the politics of Europe created a second wave of Europeans. We had the third wave of Americans after US President Donald Trump was elected, as a lot of Democrats and others moved to UAE. We see that very high profile of people coming in and asking for the Golden Visa,' he added. Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels. Abu Dhabi and Dubai have consistently been rated among the safest cities in the world. The UAE has been a magnet for millionaires from around the world in the post-pandemic period. On Wednesday, the UBS Global Wealth Report 2025 stated that the UAE attracted approximately 13,000 new millionaires in 2024, representing a 5.8 per cent increase, and bringing the total number of high-net-worth individuals in the country to 240,343. The millionaires in the UAE command approximately $785 billion (2.88 trillion) in wealth. In April, property consultancy Knight Frank reported, citing data from Henley & Partners, that the UAE attracted 7,200 millionaires in 2022, a 53 per cent increase over the previous year, bringing the total number of high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) in the country to 130,500. 'War always comes with a very high human cost, but a localised conflict like the current situation is likely to have a very limited macroeconomic effect. Unless there is a major escalation, we would not see this as significantly changing global macro trends, including migration,' said Paul Donovan, chief economist at UBS Global Wealth Management. Armand Arton said that the Iran-Israel war 'will create a new wave of people from the neighbouring country that will come to UAE who are still considering that this the safest place to park their money and family.' Arton Capital has placed the UAE passport as the strongest in the world, placing it in the first position in its 205 index. Armand added that the UAE's passport ranking has increased from 35 to number 1, and no other country in the world has achieved such rapid growth. 'This is because of having the leadership decision and the execution to sign as many visa-free as necessary in order to open the world to the Emirati citizens,' he added.
