Air India flight forced to turn back over mid-air issue days after horror crash

An Air India flight that was travelling from Hong Kong to Delhi had to double back this morning due to a pilot-reported suspected technical issue mid-flight. According to the Hindustan Times, Flight AI315, which was operated by a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, took off from Hong Kong heading for Delhi but promptly returned as a precautionary measure.
This incident follows mere days after an Air India aircraft destined for London Gatwick tragically crashed, leaving all but one of the 242 passengers on board dead. The fatal flight departed from Ahmadabad Airport in Gujarat, India, and went down just moments after take-off last Thursday afternoon.
Prior to this horrific event, Air India had been grappling with an "exceptionally poor" reputation; the crash is thought to have resulted in the loss of 169 Indian nationals, 52 Britons, seven Portuguese citizens, and one Canadian. Vishwashkumar Ramesh, the sole survivor and a British national, shared with local media his experience of witnessing fellow crew members and passengers perish around him, yet he managed to escape relatively unharmed when the aircraft split in two and ejected him.
Occupying seat 11A on the Boeing 787 flight, Mr Ramesh subsequently expressed that he "has no idea how he survived" what is considered one of India's worst aviation disasters.
India's aviation watchdog, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), implemented additional safety inspections for Air India's Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft on Friday. This step was taken as a "preventive measure" in response to Thursday's fiery crash, which also harmed inhabitants of Meghani, a densely populated district where the aircraft plummeted, reports the Mirror.
The recovery of one of the aeroplane's black boxes was announced the same day, a development described by India's Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu as "an important step forward in the investigation" into the calamitous event.
Among the British nationals lost in the crash of Air India flight 171 were wellness experts Fiongal and Jamie Greenlaw-Meek, founders of the Wellness Foundry. The couple had indulged in an Indian holiday and even shared a brief video from Ahmedabad airport, mulling over their journey shortly before they boarded the ill-fated aircraft.
Also perished in the tragedy was businessman Akeel Nanawaba, 36, his partner Hanna Vorajee, 30, and their young daughter Sarah, aged four, who were just concluding a five-day family festivity in India. Another UK-based family caught up in the disaster comprised the acclaimed hotel manager Javed Ali Syed, his wife Mariam, and their little ones Amani, aged four, and Zayn.
Furthermore, there was Raxa Modha, aged 55, her two year old grandson Rudra, and daughter-in-law Yasha Kamdar, who are thought to have been travelling back to England for a remembrance service for Ms Modha's deceased husband when they met their untimely end in the crash.

Jack Conan eager to witness fanfare of a full-blown Lions tour

Jack Conan has been a British & Irish Lion before but given it was the Covid-hit tour to South Africa of 2021, the Ireland No.8 is relishing the opportunity to embrace a proper Lions touring experience when the squad leaves for Australia on Saturday. Conan, 32, was in the stands at Aviva Stadium on Friday night as Andy Farrell's squad faced Argentina ahead of departure for Perth and an opening tour match against Western Force next Saturday. Like another eight of the 12 Leinster players heading Down Under as Irish Lions, the back-rower was held at bay six days after lifting the URC trophy at Croke Park but he was kept busy on matchday. He and four provincial team-mates Jamison Gibson-Park, Hugo Keenan, Andrew Porter and Josh van der Flier as well English Premiership final participants, Finn Russell and Will Stuart from newly crowned champions Bath and runner-up Ollie Chessum of Leicester Tigers were on Lions duty at Dublin's UCD Bowl earlier in the day, hosting a training session for 90 school children, girls and boys ranging from 8-12 years of age, and from four primary schools nominated by the Irish provinces. Even a meet and greet with young rugby fans was out of bounds for the Lions on their last tour, with South Africa in lockdown and matches played in empty stadiums as Conan started all three Tests at No.8 against the Springboks, each game behind closed doors in Cape Town with the players bussed in and out from a secluded team hotel and training base outside of the city. The chance to experience a proper tour, backed by tens of thousands of travelling supporters forming a 'Sea of Red' in Australia, is a return to tradition, albeit one eagerly awaited by Conan. "Four years ago was still great, I loved it and had a great experience,' he said. 'In a way, you get to know the lads in such a different way because it was eight weeks of kind of solitary confinement. You have to mix. 'You still have to mix now but you're getting out and about in smaller groups whereas four years ago, everyone was just kind of sitting around.' Conan was even looking forward to watching the Lions on Friday night as they played on Irish soil for the first time in their illustrious 137-year history, just to see those red jerseys play in front of the fans, giving him a taste of what is to come over the next six weeks across 10 tour matches and three Tests against the Wallabies in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. "The only taste we got of that was four years ago against Japan in Edinburgh (pre-tour) and there was around 16,000 there with spaced seating, so definitely a bit different. 'I can't wait to get over there, everyone says it's just a different fanfare, a different level of excitement when you get properly on tour. But you can even see it walking around town at the moment, people in jerseys, there's a pop-up shop, so many kids outside the Shelbourne (Hotel). It's special and I'm looking forward to getting a proper run-out at some stage." Conan does believe the 2021 tour, which ended in a 2-1 Test defeat to Rassie Erasmus's 2019 World Champions, can stand him in good stead for this summer's tour, with certain provisos. 'You know what's expected of you when you put on the jersey and when you come into this environment, into camp. Other than that, it's more just the detail, the plays, calling structures and all that, it's different. 'You've lads from other countries coming in is a little bit differently than we would do, so it's just getting used to each other a little bit. 'Now, luckily, the way we want to play is quite similar to how Ireland would play so it's not that difficult to get up to speed, but the calls are all different. There's a bit of overlap with a few Leinster calls but they're different things. The same wording, so I was caught out a few times on Tuesday when you just go into autopilot a little bit. 'So that's the real challenge. But no-one expects it to be perfect in the first few days. Even in the first few games we're going to build throughout the tour and continue to get better. That's the challenge, more than anything else.'

'More capacity on United Airlines' services from Dublin to New York's Newark and Chicago O'Hare airports is great news for our passengers,' said Gary McLean, Dublin Airport managing director. 'The move to almost year-round operations for the second daily Newark service and year-round for the daily Chicago flight is a clear signal of the strong demand from our American customers.' What's on in Dublin: Gardaí outline traffic and public transport plans for weekend

Tens of thousands of people are expected to come into the city, so it's important to plan your travel carefully and be prepared for some disruptions. Here is everything you need to know if you're headed into town during the busy weekend. What's on in Dublin this weekend? There are a number events on this weekend with three huge concerts taking place at Phoenix Park. Country star Zach Bryan is playing three sold-out shows on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings. Each night could see up to 60,000 people attending, with around 180,000 fans across the weekend. On Friday evening, the British and Irish Lions face Argentina in a highly anticipated rugby match. The Aviva stadium will be at full capacity with over 51,000 spectators expected. There are four GAA games taking place on Saturday and Sunday in Croke Park, including the Tailteann Cup semi-finals. These will draw large crowds to Jones' Road. In Fairview Park US indie band Kingfishr will play to a sold-out audience on Saturday evening. Gardaí have also warned that there are two planned 'public gatherings' taking place in Dublin city centre on Sunday afternoon, which will mean rolling road closures and some disruption to LUAS and Dublin Bus services. What should I expect? Gardaí will be out in full force to keep the city safe and help manage the crowds and traffic. Assistant Commissioner Paul Cleary said: 'With so much happening and the good weather, Dublin will be very busy this weekend. We want people to enjoy the events but also to be mindful of others". Rolling road closures and traffic delays are expected, especially near the Phoenix Park concerts, Aviva Stadium, Croke Park, and the city centre. Gardaí have a full traffic management plan and will provide updates via their social media channels like @GardaTraffic on X (formerly Twitter). ADVERTISEMENT If you feel unsafe or need assistance, look out for Gardaí on patrol or call 999/112 in an emergency. What is the best way to get around town this weekend? If you're heading to Phoenix Park to see the Zach Byran concerts the closest LUAS stops on the Red Line are Heuston and Museum, with Museum being the best option for leaving after the concerts as Heuston stop will close. The Green Line's nearest stop is Broombridge. Expect a 30- to 40-minute walk from these stops to the concert area. Park and Ride facilities are available and booking return tickets before you travel is recommended to avoid queues. Use a TFI Leap Card if you have one. If you are heading to see the Lions game at the Aviva stadium be mindful that road closures will be in place around the Ballsbridge area. The DART is the best way to get there, with stops at Lansdowne Road and Sandymount stations close by. If driving, expect delays on Shelbourne Road and nearby streets. If you're going to Croke Park this weekend to see one of the games it is accessible by LUAS (Red Line, Parnell or Abbey Street stops) and Dublin Bus. Road closures will affect areas around Jones' Road and Drumcondra, so public transport is the easier option. If you're going to see Kingfishr at Fairview Park it is best accessed by Dublin Bus or a short walk from LUAS Green Line stops like Broombridge. Roads near Fairview and Clontarf will have closures, so plan ahead. What advice are Dublin Bus, Irish Rail and Luas giving for the busy weekend ahead? Irish Rail is running extra services to help manage the large crowds expected from June 20 to 22. Late-night trains will operate from Heuston station after the Phoenix Park concerts on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, heading to major destinations including Cork, Limerick, Galway, and Belfast. Additional trains will also run on the Maynooth and Drogheda commuter lines to accommodate increased passenger numbers. Dublin Bus is implementing multiple route diversions due to concert traffic and other roadworks, with detailed changes affecting key routes like 11, 26, 37, 38, and 69. Passengers are advised to check live updates via @dublinbusnews on Twitter or their website. Luas is recommending customers plan ahead when traveling to the Phoenix Park concerts, highlighting that the closest Red Line stops are Heuston and Museum (with Heuston closing after events), and the Green Line's Broombridge stop is nearby. Using Park and Ride facilities and TFI Leap Cards will help ease your journey.
