Swiss innovation, green tech, and art shine at Oman Sustainability Week 2025
Muscat: The Swiss Embassy in Oman is proud to host a pavilion at the Oman Sustainability Week (OSW) 2025 Exhibition, taking place from 12 to 14 May at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Seventeen Swiss companies from diverse sectors - including renewable energy technology, sustainable infrastructure, construction, environmental technology, carbon storage, sustainable financing, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence - are represented at the pavilion. Notable participants include ABB, AIK Technik, Arva Greentech, Burckhardt Compression, Dreamlab Technologies, Edmond de Rothschild, Georg Fischer Corys, ReadyMix Holcim, Kanadevia Inova, Landis + Gyr, LGT, Macun, MAN Energy Solutions Switzerland, Reichle & De-Massari, SGS, Swiss AI and Synhelion.
A delegation will also travel to Muscat for the OSW 2025, comprising the Delegate of the Swiss Federal Council for the Agenda 2030 and representatives from the Swiss Federal Office of Energy, Swissmem (the Swiss association for mechanical and electrical engineering industries), the Swiss Export Risk Insurance (SERV), the Swiss Business Hub Middle East, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa), and the Oman Switzerland Friendship Association (OSFA).
The Delegate for the Agenda 2030 and several company representatives will participate in the International Sustainability Resources & Technology Conference (ISRTC) and the OSW and OPES Talks, sharing insights into their vision and innovative solutions.
Additionally, a workshop will be held between the Swiss Delegate for the Agenda 2030 and the Directorate of Sustainable Development at the Ministry of Economy focusing on strategies to achieve the national targets of the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
In celebration of the Oman Sustainability Week, the Swiss Embassy is also unveiling a new mural at SOHAR Port and Freezone by the renowned Swiss artist duo Nevercrew. The artwork, portraying a fragile glass whale sheltering a miniature marine environment, reflects the delicate balance between human activity and nature. Through imagery tied to water and green hydrogen, the mural also points to the vital role of alternative energy in creating a sustainable tomorrow and serves as a powerful visual reminder of our shared responsibility to protect the environment.

Dr. Thomas Oertle, Ambassador of Switzerland to Oman, remarked: 'The Swiss pavilion will likely be one of the most buzzing places at OSW with many state-of-the-art solutions being presented to advance the sustainability agenda. Switzerland – ranked consistently for the past 15 years as the world's most innovative country – reaffirms its commitment to fostering collaboration and exchange between the two like-minded nations, Oman and Switzerland.'

Bahrain, home to the US Central Command's regional base, issued public safety guidance on Sunday in the wake of American strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. Kuwait emergency plan In a similar development, the Kuwaiti Finance Ministry said on Sunday it has activated its emergency plan to ensure the continuity of financial and service operations with high efficiency. The measures included preparing shelters in the building of the ministries' complex, which will accommodate about 900 people, and providing warehouses to be used when necessary. Kuwait hosts a major American military base, Camp Arifjan, which is south-east of the capital, Kuwait city. It was established in 1999 and provides primary logistics for US military operations across the region. Iran has previously threatened to target US military bases in the region if Washington intervened on Israel's side. Bahrain and other Gulf states also lie near Iran's Bushehr nuclear reactor, which has reportedly been the target of Israeli strikes. Their proximity, just across the narrow waters of the Gulf, has raised regional security concerns, especially amid fears of radioactive fallout or wider escalation.

Major expansion plan for Burj Khalifa-Dubai Mall Metro Station unveiled
Transport authorities on Sunday launched a major expansion project for the Burj Khalifa-Dubai Mall Metro Station that will increase capacity by more than 5,000 passengers an hour. Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority has joined forces with leading UAE developer Emaar Properties to carry out the large-scale upgrade, to help keep pace with surging passenger numbers amid Dubai's continuing population boom. The number of journeys made at the station – which connects travellers to two popular tourist attractions in Dubai's biggest shopping centre and the world's tallest building – soared from six million in 2013 to more than 10.5 million last year. The scheme will expand the station from 6,700 to 8,500 square metres and enable it to accommodate 12,318 passengers an hour, up from 7,244. The wide-ranging project will feature improvements to entrances and pedestrian bridges to boost access, extending concourse and platform areas, additional escalators and elevators, and separating entry and exit gates to ease passenger movement. The number of fare gates will increase, with more commercial spaces integrated to raise revenue. On track for growth The move comes as ambitious plans to expand the Dubai Metro network gather pace. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, announced this month that work was under way on the emirate's flagship Blue Line project. The public transport master plan is set to transform the north-east of the city, easing traffic congestion and establishing a direct link with Dubai International Airport. The Dh18 billion ($5.17 billion) project – which is to open in 2029 to coincide with the 20th anniversary of Dubai Metro's launch – will include 14 new stations and add 30km to the Metro network, with 15.5km underground. The expansion is part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which has easier commuting among its top priorities, to cater for a fast-growing population. Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority said the Blue Line would connect five principal urban regions of Dubai – Bur Dubai/Deira, Downtown/Business Bay, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Dubai Marina/JBR and Expo City Dubai. When completed, the Metro network will be 131km long and encompass 78 stations served by 168 trains. The number of Dubai Metro passengers is expected to exceed 300 million in 2026 and reach 320 million by 2031, Dubai Media Office has reported. Bolstering Dubai's public transport network is viewed as crucial to efforts to address traffic congestion as the emirate's population increases at a rapid pace. Dubai's population stood at 3.962 million as of Sunday, up from 3.754 million on the corresponding date in 2024.
