Govt reaches out to cos for developing ITIs

Mumbai: The state govt has reached out to around 5,000 companies, associations, federations, professionals and entrepreneurs to rope them in the policy aimed towards developing the
Industrial Training Institutes
(ITIs) through
public-private partnerships
(PPP).
The policy was announced through a govt resolution (GR) last week, and the state's
skill development
, employment and entrepreneurship department is in the process of getting feedback from all stakeholders, mainly the industries. The govt is already in talks with a handful of industries, said minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha on Wednesday.
"We are asking industries to come forward and adopt the ITIs, offer a tailor-made course that is required in their industry and directly employ the students," said Lodha.
The ownership of the ITI land and building will remain with the govt, but the industries can use existing courses or offer new ones based on their requirements. Existing teachers will also be retained, but if the partner industry wants to hire additional staff, they can be hired. One company from the food industry has already shown interest in an ITI in Sangli. The department has written to 5,000 organisations to take their feedback and understand their requirements.
"We want these institutions to teach new-age courses that are not being currently offered in the ITIs. We will urge them to absorb 50% of the batch, and the remaining students will be employable in other companies from the same industry," said the minister during a media interaction.
The cabinet had approved the policy during a meeting last week. The state has over 425 ITIs. While the state wants all the ITIs to be gradually adopted by the industries, in the first year the plan is to have at least 25 running in the PPP model. The Maharashtra Institute for Transformation (MITRA) will act as the strategic partner for the implementation of the policy. Every adopted ITI will have a monitoring committee too.

Pune: Over 1.2 lakh students have applied for Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) with an intake capacity of 1.4 lakh seats this year. Applications are 10% higher in state-run ITIs as compared to private institutes. Over the past 5-6 years, ITIs have seen a rise in demand due to work opportunities. A guaranteed apprenticeship after completion of the three-year course has raised the bar. Experts said that better job opportunities after course completion, direct second-year entry to engineering courses and new-age courses in artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics and the traditional electronic, mechanical, and information technology diploma courses were the main drivers for students to pick ITI. Directorate of Vocational Education and Training (DVET) has also announced a revised schedule for admissions to ITIs. Students can now submit their online applications till June 26. So far, over 1.39 lakh students have registered for ITI admissions, of which 1.25 lakh have completed and submitted their applications. This admission process covers 1,007 ITIs across the state, including 419 govt-run and 588 private institutes. The online application process began on May 15 . The first merit list will be out on July 9, followed by the first round of admissions between July 10 and 15. Subsequent admission rounds will go on till Aug with the final institute-level counselling round on Aug 21. Suresh Kadu, retired principal of a govt ITI in Pune, said, "Students opt for diploma, technical courses, skill-based course or vocational education after SSC. The demand for students with ITI diplomas is high in the market for a skilled workforce. Students also want these short-term courses and there is job waiting at the end of it." Affordable fees are another attraction. They range between Rs 15,000 and Rs 16,000 for govt-run institutes and private institutes charge around Rs 25,000. Student Vishal Jadhav said, "I will set up my startup in mechanics. My uncle has been in the business for over 20 years. The ITI course will qualify me to set up the business." Lodha Developers acquires 945 transit camp apartments measuring 3.29 lakh sq ft for ₹567 crore from Arihant in Mumbai

Mumbai-based listed real estate developer Lodha Developers Limited has purchased 945 permanent transit camp (PTC) units, spanning over 3.39 lakh sq ft, from Arihant Construction Company in Mumbai's Mankhurd area for ₹567 crore, according to property registration documents accessed by CRE Matrix. The deal is linked to Lodha's ongoing project in Vikhroli, where, under the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) scheme, the developer is required to hand over a portion of built-up space to the SRA in exchange for additional construction rights for sale in the open market. Arihant Construction, which is undertaking a slum rehabilitation project in Mankhurd with over 83,000 sq m of free-sale component, is supplying these PTC units. To meet its obligations, Lodha will transfer the acquired units to the SRA. The documents show that the transaction forms part of a larger deal involving the transfer of free sale Floor Space Index (FSI) under the Development Control and Promotion Regulations (DCPR) 2034. Transit camp units are temporary housing accommodations provided to people, typically slum dwellers or tenants, who are displaced due to redevelopment projects, especially under slum rehabilitation or infrastructure development schemes. Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) scheme is a government initiative aimed at redeveloping slum areas in Mumbai by providing free, permanent housing to eligible slum dwellers while allowing private developers to construct and sell residential/commercial units for profit on the remaining land The agreement allows Lodha to integrate the acquired Floor Space Index (FSI) into its own Vikhroli project, enabling the use of Arihant's free sale rights to develop residential and amenity spaces within the township. The transaction was registered on June 3, 2025, with a stamp duty of ₹34.02 crore and registration fees of ₹30,000 paid. This provision allows developers to transfer and utilise unused FSI from one project to another, a mechanism commonly used in redevelopment and slum rehabilitation projects across Mumbai. An email query has been sent to Lodha Developers Limited. If a response is received, the story will be updated. Arihant Construction Company could not be reached for comment. The company announced in a regulatory filing that it would rebrand from Macrotech Developers Limited to Lodha Developers Limited, effective June 16. Lodha Group and 'House of Abhinandan Lodha' have no connection with each other, and both entities decided to communicate this widely, they said in a statement.

UCO bank fraud: CBI court refuses to discharge Topworth director

MUMBAI: A special CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) court refused to discharge Abhay Lodha, the director of Topworth Steels and Power Pvt Ltd, from a cheating and criminal conspiracy case for allegedly causing losses worth ₹74 crore to UCO Bank. The FIR was registered against M/s Akshata Mercantile Private Ltd (AMPL) and unknown UCO Bank officials after the company submitted four bills worth ₹74 crore under Letter of Credit (LC), which were diverted to Topworth Steels. The case was registered based on a complaint by the general manager and zonal head of the public sector bank, alleging that the office bearers of AMPL and certain bank officials cheated the bank to the tune of ₹74.82 crore. As per the CBI, UCO bank had discounted bills worth ₹74.82 crore, which was diverted by AMPL to Topworth Group of Companies. One of the receiving companies refused to accept these bills stating that the documents were not as per LC. The bills remained unpaid, causing a loss of ₹74.82 crore to UCO bank. The prosecution alleged that the request letters were prepared at the behest of Lodha. The discharge plea observed that Lodha was falsely implicated in the case since he is neither the director nor engaged in the day-to-day affairs of AMPL. Merely because Lodha was the guarantor to the LC does not implicate him in the conspiracy, submitted the defence, adding that there was no evidence to show on record that funds were being diverted. However, the court observed that even if Lodha is not the director of AMPL, the investigating officer had collected material to show that AMPL was a company of the Topworth group, of which Lodha was the chairman. 'He has direct control over the business affairs of M/s. AMPL. Throughout the investigation, it was revealed that Mr Abhay Lodha was the prime accused and without his indulgence, the crime could not have been committed,' the court said. In an order passed on June 12, the court further said that the material placed on record shows that there was criminal intent behind certain acts of Lodha with regard to the bank.
