Mumbai: Notices issues to tenants to remove illegal extensions
MUMBAI
: After a 35-year-old woman lost her life and another was injured following the collapse of a portion of an unauthorised structural extension of a rehabilitated tenement (RT) building at Byculla (W), the
Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board
is issuing warning notices to tenants of such buildings in the city to remove unauthorised extensions. Unauthorised structural extensions have been made by many tenants of such buildings.
On May 28, a portion of unauthorised structural extensions, protruding beyond the original building line on the fifth floor, which were carried out by tenants of the building, collapsed.
Following the incident, officials of the repair and reconstruction board visited the site and instructed tenants to remove unauthorised extensions. The Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board is now issuing warning notices to tenants in reconstructed RT buildings in its jurisdiction.
"The reconstructed tenement buildings were built between 1980 and 1990 after Mhada acquired rights to the buildings, which became dangerous and reconstructed these buildings. The Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board carries out regular maintenance of these buildings. There are 388 buildings across the city, but unauthorised extensions have been carried out over the last 10 to 15 years, and some of the buildings are very old. This particular building, which has 193 residential rooms and 11 non-residential rooms, is also very old. We are issuing notices to tenants of these buildings to remove the unauthorised extensions," said a Mhada official.
"Residents carry out these unauthorised extensions as they are hamstrung due to the small size of their rooms. But while carrying out these extensions, they do not take adequate precautions," said a Mhada official.

has a dedicated Building and Factory department, which has a designated officer for carrying out action, including removal of unauthorised construction under the MMC Act, and they carry out action accordingly. Mhada also has officials to carry out such action, but they don't carry out any action as required. They only initiate action when an incident occurs. Mhada is lackadaisical when it comes to action against unauthorised construction. It has to be alert and take systemic action against unauthorised construction."

Mithi River desilting fraud: Court refuses pre-arrest bail to BMC officer Prashant Tayshete
MUMBAI: A special court on Saturday rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Prashant Tayshete, one of the three Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officers booked in connection with the alleged irregularities in executing contracts for desilting the Mithi River. The case involves alleged irregularities in executing contracts for desilting the Mithi River. It isn't clear why his anticipatory bail plea was rejected, as the detailed court order is not yet available. Tayshete was one of the 13 people and entities named in the FIR registered by the Mumbai police's Economic Offences Wing (EOW) for allegedly causing a loss of ₹ 65.54 crore to the BMC while executing contracts to desilt the Mithi River between 2013 and 2023. According to the EOW, Tayshete and two other accused BMC officers allegedly tailored the tender for the desilting contracts to benefit Kochi-based Matprop Technical Services Pvt Ltd, resulting in the company's monopoly over the contracts. When the BMC's contractors approached Matprop for desilting equipment, they were directed to approach alleged intermediaries Jay Joshi and Ketan Kadam, according to the EOW. The duo, in connivance with senior Matprop executives, allegedly rented the machines at inflated rates. The accused also allegedly fudged records to increase the amount of silt to be removed from the Mithi River to benefit certain contractors and the rates they were supposed to be paid. Tayshete had moved the court seeking protection from arrest on May 19. His counsel, advocate Vaibhav Punekar, submitted that Tayshete looked after stormwater drainage and was only involved in desilting a minor portion of the river, along with transporting the sludge removed for disposal. Punekar also told the court that Tayshete had no knowledge about the alleged fraud related to renting desilting machines. During his visit to Kerala, he was only tasked with machine demonstration work and submitted a report regarding that, Tayshete claimed in his plea. He was not connected with any forged memorandums of understanding and has not received any money related to the concerned work, the plea said. Requesting pre-arrest bail, Tayshete's lawyer argued that his client was a retired BMC officer who cannot influence any witnesses and tamper with any documents. He added that no case of cheating, forgery or conspiracy can be made out against him. Earlier this month, the court had granted bail to Joshi, saying there is no evidence to show that he was an alleged intermediary involved in compelling contractors to hire machines at inflated rates.

3 years after it was carved, no office for P-East ward
Mumbai: Three years after splitting P-North Ward into two, BMC is still struggling to find an office for the newly carved P-East ward. With BMC elections around the corner, BJP has demanded that BMC acquire a plot of land in Malad (east) to construct a new office for P-East ward. In 2023, the state govt said BMC was awaiting a 40,000 sq ft constructed area in a Slum Rehabilitation Authority project, but it didn't work out. So far, the new ward office hasn't started, and residents have to visit the old P-North ward office for routine work. P-North ward, which earlier covered Malad, Goregaon, and Kandivli, was the most populous ward in the city with a population of around 13 lakh. Following a demand from former BJP corporator Vinod Mishra, minister Ashish Shelar of BJP last week asked BMC officials to construct the new P-East ward office. "Despite the state govt issuing orders, BMC has delayed constructing a new ward office. As a result, people from Malad (east) have to spend a long time besides having to pay Rs 100 to get to the ward office in Malad (west). So we have demanded a ward office in Malad (east). "But this office is also not accessible and takes more than 45 minutes to reach from Malad (east). For all other services, residents have to go to the old P-North ward office, in Malad (west), near Liberty Garden. It is more than 5 km away from Malad (east). Also, there is only one assistant municipal commissioner for the old and new wards," Mishra said. "The fastest option is to acquire this private plot and construct the ward office. We have asked BMC to temporarily start a functional ward office for basic amenities like war works and solid waste management in an existing structure," Mishra said. BMC split up the former combined ward into two since providing civic amenities — water supply, sanitation, and citizen services was a challenge due to the vast area and high population.
