Court withdraws charges against John Masukela in Thabo Bester escape case
The NPA has withdrawn charges against one of the accused in the ongoing Thabo Bester escape case. The charges against John Masukela, accused number five and former employee of G4S, have been officially withdrawn.

This revelation emerged during a court session where the State Prosecutor announced the decision, stating: "I am going to withdraw the case against one of the accused. I think we can excuse him, and he can go in peace, and that is accused number five, John Masukela."
Bester and his eight co-accused appeared before the Bloemfontein High Court for a pre-trial hearing over charges linked to his 2022 prison escape.
The group is facing charges including fraud, corruption, aiding an escape, violating a corpse, and defeating the ends of justice.

Bester and his partner, Dr Nandipha Magudumana, were arrested in Tanzania following his 2022 escape from Mangaung Prison.
Magudumana recently approached the Constitutional Court, where she is also challenging the legality of her arrest and deportation.
Meanwhile, Advocate Lerato Moela, representing Bester, has requested more time to prepare after the judge instructed him to consult his client after he told the court he might not see the trial through due to financial challenges.
"If I may address My Lady on what has caused the delays is that there is an application that is pending dealing with Section 35 on accused number 7. What he is seeking is conducive consultation. There is video footage in the form of a USB that needs to be viewed. What he requires is that he be granted access to this."
The judge slammed the delays in the matter after Magudumana's father, Zolile Sekeleni, stated that he does not have a legal representative after Legal Aid allegedly rejected his application for representation in January.
"I will have to have a definite something. You can look at this court; there are so many role players who are affected. The administration of justice is affected. So, I cannot go on a maybe. We must either start on the 21st of July or we must make alternative arrangements. The responsibility of finding a legal representative lies with you. I could have attended to other cases. I can't work with this uncertainty," the judge said.
Sekeleni indicated that he was not aware of the process to follow to appeal the rejection by Legal Aid, adding that he cannot afford legal fees.
"I applied for legal aid, and my application was rejected. It was told I can't get a lawyer, even though I explained that I do not have the funds to pay for a lawyer. My Lord, I was not aware of the process I needed to follow to appeal the Legal Aid rejection. I only learnt of the process now. The person who was assisting me with the process told me he would introduce me to a lawyer. I only got the response late because there was no clear communication, which has resulted in delays," he said.
The pre-trial was postponed to July 21.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said Friday's court appearance was for the formal joinder of Hlophe to the matter and a possible bail application on his behalf. 'However, the application did not proceed as Hlophe opted to appoint a private attorney to represent him,' Nyuswa said. All suspects have been remanded in custody. 'The [NPA] condemns acts of violent crime and remains resolute in pursuing justice for victims,' Nyuswa said. Hitman jailed for life after attacking elderly couple on son-in-law's orders
Davis was handed two life sentences for a deadly stabbing and two attempted murders carried out at dawn, under orders from the victims' son-in-law. A Cape Town man has been sentenced to two life terms for killing an elderly man and attacking his wife during morning prayer, in a paid hit ordered by the couple's son-in-law. The High Court Western Cape Division handed Reagan Davis two life sentences and 15 years for the murder of 75-year-old Hashim Ahmed Dennis and the attempted murder of his 70-year-old wife, Kulsoem Dennis, and their daughter, Ibtisaam Dennis. The attackers targeted the couple while they were preparing for the sunrise prayer. Elderly couple targeted while preparing for sunrise prayers Davis, 35, stood trial alongside the elderly couple's son-in-law, Brent Williams. However, Williams died on 10 February 2025, just before the state closed its case. After Williams died, the trial continued against Davis. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said that senior state prosecutor Advocate Evadne Kortje proved that the murder was a contract killing and Davis was paid R1 000, which he used to buy takkies. Kortje led evidence from 10 witnesses, which revealed that Williams and his wife, Ibtisaam Dennis, stayed with the elderly couple. 'Williams hired Davis and another man, unknown to the state, to invade and attack his in-laws to 'neutralise' his marital problems. CCTV footage showed Williams travelling with the two co-perpetrators in his red maroon bakkie to the area of 6 Conifer Close in the early hours of 31 January 2019. The son-in-law dropped Davis and the other man off and drove off to wait until they finished the job. Kulsoem Dennis heard the voice of an intruder asking where the money was in Afrikaans before brutally attacking her. The intruder struck the wife on the head, neck, and chest with a firearm. 'She chanted, 'Allahu-Akbar' (God is Great) until she hit the floor. Severely injured and in shock, she lay on the floor, pretending to be dead as her burga (headscarf) fell softly over her face and she kept her eyes closed,' Ntabazalila said. Wife pretended to be dead According to the NPA, the wife heard shoving noises as the attackers ransacked the room. They assaulted Hashim Ahmed Dennis as he stepped out of the bedroom. 'When it quieted down, she got up and found her husband on the floor, deceased, bleeding from various stab wounds. He had 15 stab wounds,' Ntabazalila said. The couple's daughter heard a noise and noticed a bright light from her parents' flatlet. When she went to investigate, she was met with a knife-wielding intruder who charged at her. CCTV footage showed the two attackers sprinting back to Williams' vehicle, getting in the bakkie and driving away shortly after the attack. The daughter called the police and her sister as she discovered the home invasion and the attack on her parents. Ntabazalila said that the police investigation identified Williams as the mastermind behind the attacks. Williams was arrested on 20 May 2020. Mastermind behind attack was the son-in-law Police arrested Davis on 10 June 2020. He did not provide an alibi to the investigating officer. In aggravation of the sentence, Advocate Kortje argued that the murder was premeditated, executed with direct intent and excessive force, and committed in the context of a robbery and housebreaking. He described it as a contract killing orchestrated by the son-in-law. 'The attempted murder of Mrs Dennis involved sadistic violence against a vulnerable and elderly woman at peace during a prayer in the bedroom of her home,' Ntabazalila said. ALSO READ: Mother who allegedly hired hitmen to murder 'drug-addict' son remains behind bars The court sentenced Davis to: 15 years' direct imprisonment for housebreaking with intent to commit murder, 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances, Life imprisonment for the attempted murder of the wife, 10 years for the attempted murder of the daughter, and Life imprisonment for the premeditated murder of the husband. It ordered the sentences of housebreaking with intent to commit murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and attempted murder of Ibtisaam Dennis to run concurrently with the two life sentences. Two life sentences and 15 years The Western Cape Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Nicolette Bell, praised the investigation and prosecution team's efforts to bring justice to the victims. 'It can never be overemphasised how important human life is, and the NPA will continue being vigorous in its pursuit of these cases to serve as a deterrent to would-be murderers,' Bell assured.

KZN man gets double life sentence for rape and murder of Umkomaas child Justice has been served for Lusanda Nkomo who was raped and murdered in Umkomaas last year. South Coast Herald reports that the Pietermaritzburg High Court, sitting in Port Shepstone, handed down a double life sentence to Rogers Perumal (57) for these crimes. Perumal lived in the same area as the child, and they knew each other. On March 17 last year, Perumal's dog went missing. While conducting a search in the neighbourhood, Nkomo joined him as she was fond of the dog. 'When they got to a bushy area, Perumal raped the child,' says Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) KZN spokesperson. 'He then assaulted her all over her body and strangled her before fleeing the scene.' When the child did not return home that day, community members searched for her throughout the day and night. The next day, her lifeless body was found. Investigations were carried out, and as Perumal was the last person she was seen with, he was arrested. Angered locals ransacked Perumal's house and set his belongings alight on the day of his arrest. He abandoned bail on March 20 at the Scottburgh Magistrate's Court. At his sentencing last week, Advocate Mziwodumo Miza led the evidence of witnesses who saw Perumal walking with the child in the direction where her body was found. He also led DNA evidence linking Perumal to the DNA material found on the child. A victim impact statement compiled by the child's mother and facilitated by court preparation officer Beaufort Shinga, was handed in. Perumal was sentenced to a term of life imprisonment each, for the rape and murder. The court also ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders. His application for leave to appeal against both convictions and sentences was subsequently refused. 'This sentence underscores the seriousness with which the justice system treats crimes against the most vulnerable members of our society,' says Ramkisson-Kara. 'The NPA remains resolute in its pursuit of justice for victims of gender-based violence and child abuse, and will continue to ensure that perpetrators of such heinous crimes are removed from society and face the harshest possible consequences. Justice has been served, and the rights and dignity of our children protected.' Nkomo was described as a bubbly and energetic child.
