Benjamin Hassan makes history as 1st Lebanese player in Open era to qualify for French Open

PARIS (AP) — Benjamin Hassan made history Friday by becoming the first Lebanese tennis player in the Open era to qualify for the main draw of the French Open.
The 30-year-old defeated Japan's James Trotter 6-2, 7-6 (5) in the final round of qualifying.
Germany-born Hassan secured his place at Roland-Garros by winning three straight matches in the qualifying tournament on the clay courts of Paris.
Ranked No. 177 in the world, Hassan is no stranger to breaking new ground for Lebanese tennis.
Last summer, at the Paris Olympics, which also took place on the clay courts of Roland-Garros, Hassan became the first player to represent Lebanon. He defeated American Christopher Eubanks in the first round, claiming the first win in the history of the competition for his country.
His qualification is the second major milestone for Lebanese tennis this year.
In January, Hady Habib, who is currently ranked 159th, won a first-round match at the Australian Open. This was the country's first Grand Slam match victory.
'The journey continues," said the federation. "Keep making Lebanon proud.'
In the first round of the French Open, which begins Sunday, he is scheduled to face another player who also came through the qualifying round, the Italian Matteo Gigante.

Oklahoma State's Preston Stout runs away with title at 2025 Northeast Amateur

Preston Stout had a dominating victory Saturday to capture the 2025 Northeast Amateur title at Wannamoisett Country Club in Rhode Island. Stout, a rising junior at Oklahoma State, vaulted into contention during Thursday's second round, tying the course record with an 8-under 61. He then slammed the door Saturday, shooting 4-under 65 in the final round, finishing at 9 under for the week and winning by eight shots over 16-year-old Miles Russell, the only other player to finish under par. With the win, Stout officially locked up his spot in the 2025 U.S. Amateur at Olympic Club in San Francisco, but there was hardly any doubt. He's ranked eighth in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. But the win did likely help solidify his spot on the U.S. Walker Cup team, set for Sept. 6-7 at Cypress Point in California. Stout was far from the only Oklahoma State golfer to collect a big win Saturday. Teammate Ethan Fang became the first American in 18 years to win the British Amateur. Fang, No. 7 in WAGR, and Stout both helped the Cowboys win their 12th national championship last month at Omni La Costa, and now they're off to great starts this summer and have busy schedules ahead. The Northeast Amateur is the second event of the Elite Amateur Golf Series. Tyler Watts had a record win last week at the Sunnehanna Amateur. Up next is the North & South Amateur, contested at Pinehurst, set for June 22-28.

Yarbrough goes on injured list in another hit to Yankees pitching, Winans to make New York debut

Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Ryan Yarbrough was put on the 15-day injured list with a strained right oblique in another blow to the Yankees rotation, and rookie Allan Winans will make his New York debut on Monday night at Cincinnati after going 7-0 with an 0.90 ERA at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Yarbrough, a 33-year-old right-hander who joined the rotation in May, is 3-1 with a 3.90 ERA in eight starts and eight relief appearances. He last pitched on Wednesday, getting a no-decision in a loss to the Los Angeles Angels. 'Something that's been kind of coming on a little bit in his second-to-last start and then a little more sore towards the end of this last start,' Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday. 'After his last start was pretty sore the next day and then before he was getting ready to throw his side the other day felt like couldn't quite do it.' Boone said a scan indicated a low-grade strain. New York made the IL placement retroactive to Friday and recalled left-hander Jayvien Sandridge from the RailRiders. New York already was missing ace Gerrit Cole (Tommy John surgery), AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil (lat strain) and Marcus Stroman (left knee inflammation). Winans will become the Yankees' eighth starting pitcher this season, matching their 2024 total. A 29-year-old right-hander originally selected by the New York Mets in the 17th round of the 2018 amateur draft, Winans made his big league debut with Atlanta in July 2023 and was 1-4 with a 7.20 ERA in eight starts over two seasons. The Yankees claimed him off waivers on Jan. 23. Winans' fastball has averaged 90 mph this season. In a 4-3 win at Louisville on Tuesday, he threw 23 sinkers, 19 changeups, 18 sliders, 10 fastballs and seven curveballs. 'He's been tremendous. To be this deep in the season as a starting pitcher, have sub-1 (ERA), it's been really, really excellent," Boone said. "So, hopefully, he brings some of that up here with us tomorrow.' Stroman last pitched for the Yankees on April 11 and is to make a third minor league rehab start on Tuesday. 'Hopefully around 70 pitches or so and then be in the mix,' Boone said. ___ More AP baseball: recommended
