The Isle by Wonderla amusement park is a new water-themed resort on the edges of Bengaluru

The Hindu12 hours ago

An hour's drive from Bengaluru, the Wonderla amusement park has been a summer holiday staple since it opened its doors in 2005. Located on Mysore Road, this one was the brand's second offering, after the first park in Kochi in 2000. While amusement parks are not typically my scene — I have not visited Wonderla since my teens, an invitation to their new water-themed resort, The Isle, immediately piqued my interest. For someone who gravitates towards beaches and water-centric holidays, Bengaluru offers limited options within driving distance. So, I set out for a first look.
I get in the car around midafternoon and reach Mysore Road in an hour, surprising given Bengaluru traffic's propensity to ruin plans. The amusement park's iconic clock tower (part of a ride called the sky tilt) looms on the horizon. I am not an adrenaline junkie by any means and stay far away from such rides, but there is a thrill in the air. The Isle is a few steps away from the amusement park. Spread over 4.5 acres, it has 39 rooms on offer. As I enter, an ocean of blue greets me. A happy sight for beach lovers in Bengaluru.
The stay
My cottage is cute. A small room but boasting a four-poster bed and deep bathtub. The real attraction reveals itself when I open the curtains. Right outside my French window is the lagoon with a sit out area, and a hammock. It is raining so I make a cup of tea and enjoy the patter of the rain on the stream.
Apart from the water hammock cottages, the Isle has cottages with a private jacuzzies and dome shaped cottages with a skylight. If you have a more adventurous vibe, go for the tent style rooms. Although made like tents, they come equipped with bathrooms and air conditioners.
The property
After unwinding in my room, I head out. Arun K. Chittilappilly, the executive chairman and managing director of Wonderla Holidays Ltd welcomes us. We take part in a coffee mixology session by Maverick and Farmer. Over cups of coffee, we mingle with the Wonderla team.
Arun takes us on a tour. We climb up the tree house that gives a 360-degree view of the area and is a great sunset point. You can catch a glimpse of the hillocks in the area from here. Next to the lobby is a sandy area with gazebos, for an added beach-like feel. If you want to take a dip, they have a temperature-controlled pool. With so many water bodies, the question of sustainability is on my mind. But I am informed that they are committed to using sustainable practices, and use closed-loop water reuse systems that reduce water requirements.
The resort is pet-friendly, and there is a pet park for your furry friend. The Therapy Tree Spa is not yet operational when I visit but claims to have signature treatments that are inspired by local ingredients and traditions.
The food
I head to dinner at the Spice Cove restaurant. The restaurant has an open kitchen dishing out baos, dim sum and bowls of ramen. There is also a buffet spread with Indian, European and Asian food. The dishes are average and nothing to write home about.
I am more impressed with the Oasis poolside bar. The bar stools are in the water, so you dip your feet in while sipping on your cocktails. As of now they only have wine and wine-cocktails, but will have a full bar license soon.
I head back to my cottage after dinner and unwind by the lagoon. The serene and quiet atmosphere with the sounds of running water can lull anyone to sleep.
As I leave the next morning, I feel fully relaxed because of the short escape from the city.
Cottages are priced at ₹10,000 upwards. At Mysore Road. For more details call 7026500011. The writer was at The Isle by Wonderla by invitation from the resort

U.S. travel advisory leaves Kerala's tourism sector uneasy

Kerala Tourism, which is struggling to return to the growth track in the post-pandemic era, will be impacted by the travel advisory issued by the U.S. asking its citizens to exercise increased caution while travelling to India. Tourism in the State heavily relies on the U.S. and the U.K. markets to meet its annual foreign footfall. The travel advisory issued on June 18 stated that rape is one of the fastest-growing crimes in India. Violent crime, including sexual assault, happen at tourist sites and other locations, it says. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning. They target tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets, shopping malls, and government facilities. Stating that the U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to its citizens in the rural areas in India, it has asked its citizens to avoid the stretch comprising eastern Maharashtra, northern Telangana, and western West Bengal, where Naxalite groups are active, Jammu and Kashmir, and the northeastern States. The advisory does not mention Kerala specifically. Need for permission As per the advisory, U.S. government employees working in India are also required to obtain permission prior to travelling to most areas in the States such as Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Meghalaya, and Odisha. According to tourism industry stakeholders, the U.S. travel advisory is taken seriously by the tourists globally. An average foreign tourist will not try to check whether Kerala is excluded from the list. They simply drop the country from their itinerary in such a situation, said E.M. Najeeb, senior vice-president, Indian Association of Tour Operators. . According to Kerala Tourism figures, the U.K. is the biggest market for Kerala Tourism with British tourists accounting for 14.55% of the total foreign tourists who visited Kerala in 2024, followed by the US with 13.33%. Of the around 7.38 lakh foreign tourist visits in Kerala in the previous year, 2.05 lakh were from these two countries. Moreover, the travel advisory issued by the U.S. will influence tourists from European countries, James Kodianthara, chairperson of the Kerala chapter of the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO). West Asia crisis The foreign tourist season in Kerala begins by November and lasts till March, and the booking for the season normally begins shortly after the closure of an ongoing season and gains pace in June, July, and August. Already, the deepening economic and geopolitical challenges in West Asia are set to pose a serious challenge to the tourism markets here, as the majority of the tourists from Europe and the U.S. have to travel through the transit hubs in the strife-torn West Asia to reach here. The Union government should urgently reach out to the U.S. administration or take measures to counter the adverse effect of the advisory, said Mr. Kodianthara.

Airlines halt Gulf flights as US enters Israel-Iran war; Dubai, Doha services affected: What will be its impact?

Major international airlines extended flight cancellations to the Persian Gulf, disrupting air traffic to critical hubs such as Dubai after the US struck nuclear sites in Iran and Tehran vowed to retaliate. Singapore Airlines said it would suspend service to Dubai until Wednesday night and warned more flights could be cancelled due to the severity of the situation. British Airways added cancellations to Dubai and Doha, while Air France-KLM reportedly will scrap flights to Dubai and Riyadh, reported Bloomberg. The airlines' decisions hinted at the potential for escalation of the war between Israel and Iran after US President Donald Trump joined the fight by attacking Iran's key nuclear sites. The dramatic escalation risks retaliation from Tehran, which will potentially disrupt economies that had previously been unaffected by the fallout of regional hostilities, said Bloomberg. Prior to the US strikes on Sunday, Tehran threatened to hit US bases in the Persian Gulf should Washington get involved, and close down the Strait of Hormuz, an important oil trade route. 'A widening conflict around the Strait of Hormuz could threaten to disrupt global airline traffic, particularly if flight restrictions to key transfer hubs in Qatar and the UAE were to occur,' said Bloomberg Intelligence analysts Eric Zhu and George Ferguson. Excluding local carriers, Indian airlines including IndiGo, Turkish Airlines and British Airways are among the most exposed, they wrote. Singapore Airlines has cancelled flights to Dubai from the city-state since Sunday over security concerns. British Airways diverted a Dubai-bound flight to Zurich after it reached Saudi Arabia's airspace in the early hours of Sunday. Another jet returned to Heathrow after going as far as Egypt, the news agency reported. Asian airlines have also taken steps to safeguard passengers and crews. Japan Airlines plans to have flights between Tokyo's Haneda airport and Doha avoid airspace above the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, adding about 20 minutes to journeys. Air India will progressively avoid the use of certain airspace over the Persian Gulf in the coming days, reported Bloomberg. The actions come after President Donald Trump decided to attack Iran after decades of hostility. The possibility of further disruption will depend on how forcefully Iran retaliates. Trump has threatened more attacks if Tehran doesn't capitulate. The UK is organising a chartered flight for British nationals who want to leave Israel, while Germany sent a military transport plane to extract citizens and France said it also plans repatriation flights, the news agency said.
