Duke star Cooper Flagg wins Naismith Trophy

April 6 - Duke star Cooper Flagg won his second major award in two days when he received the Naismith Trophy as the national player of the year on Sunday.
One day earlier, Flagg won the Wooden Award.
Flagg became just the fourth freshman to win the Naismith Trophy, which is presented by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. The others are Texas' Kevin Durant (2007), Kentucky's Anthony Davis (2012) and Duke's Zion Williamson (2019).
The same quartet are the only freshmen to win the Wooden Award.
Flagg's latest award was announced in San Antonio, one day after the Blue Devils lost 70-67 to Houston in the Final Four.
"This is an incredible honor and I am truly grateful for the recognition," Flagg said. "This whole year, this (NCAA) tournament, has gone by so fast. It's been a blur and an incredible year. I have to give a lot of credit to my teammates, Coach (Jon) Scheyer, the rest of the staff and everyone who had me ready to go every single night. They believed in me and let me be me out there on the court."
Flagg emerged as the favorite for the award over the second half of the season. He averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 37 games.
The other finalists were Auburn's Johni Broome, Florida's Walter Clayton Jr. and Purdue's Braden Smith.
Among Flagg's other accolades are being named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year as well as being a consensus first-team All-American.
Flagg is expected to be the No. 1 choice in the NBA draft if he chooses to enter his name.
Rick Pitino was named the Werner Ladder Coach of the Year award after leading St. John's to a 31-5 record in his second season at the school.
The 31 wins matched the school mark reached twice in the mid-1980s.
The Red Storm received a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament before exiting in the second round with a loss to Arkansas. The first-round victory over Omaha was the school's first NCAA tourney win since 2000.
"I'm truly honored to be the recipient of the Werner Ladder Naismith Coach of the Year award, especially with the incredible coaching of the other finalists this past season," the 72-year-old Pitino said. "I want to thank my players and coaches for making this possible after a historic season for St. John's Basketball. I am also grateful to the Atlanta Tipoff Club and the Naismith Awards selection committee for this prestigious honor."
The other finalists were Auburn's Bruce Pearl, Houston's Kelvin Sampson and Scheyer.
Creighton center Ryan Kalkbrenner won Naismith Defensive Player of the Year honors. The senior blocked 93 shots this season while winning Big East Defensive Player of the Year honors for the fourth straight season.
Kalkbrenner also averaged 19.2 points and 8.7 rebounds and shot 65.3 percent from the field this season.
"It is a huge honor to be named Naismith Defensive Player of the Year and I am most appreciative to my teammates, coaches and the Atlanta Tipoff Club for recognizing our success," Kalkbrenner said.
Houston's Joseph Tugler and two Tennessee players -- Jahmai Mashack and Zakai Zeigler -- were the other finalists.

NFL legend Adrian Peterson caught on camera in violent fight leaving multiple people bloodied and bruised

Footage has emerged of former Minnesota Vikings superstar running back Adrian Peterson getting into a fist fight during a poker game in Houston, Texas last month. The video, obtained by TMZ, shows the 40-year-old Peterson squaring up with a fellow poker player over a hand at the JokerStars social club back on May 27. Peterson told TMZ that he and a friend were involved in a disagreement while at a table. Eventually, 'one thing led to another' and the pair raised their fists at each other. Video shows Peterson and his buddy throwing punches for several seconds, despite one person trying to separate them. The former running back ate a number of punches to the face at the beginning of the scrap, but he eventually got back at his counterpart with some haymakers. TMZ says that bloody wounds were visible on the faces of both people involved. However, Peterson claims his injury came from falling into a chair rather than a punch. While alcohol was involved, Peterson told the outlet that wasn't the only reason the situation escalated. "Me and the guy, we're cool," Peterson said. "We've known each other. It was literally like a brother situation. We agreed to disagree, we had our words, and we threw blows -- and that was it." Peterson added: 'I felt really bad. It's a situation where I kind of regret it.' The outlet says that police were not called and are not investigating. The club did not punish either person involved. This is not the first time that Peterson has gotten violent with someone else - having previously been charged win the cases of two domestic disputes. In 2014, Peterson pled no contest to a misdemeanor charge of recklessly assaulting his son after using a tree branch - known as a 'switch' to beat him on his back, buttocks, genitals, ankles, and legs as a punishment. Peterson was punished in a similar manner in his own childhood. The running back was put on probation and fined $4,000 while avoiding a jail sentence. The NFL placed him on unpaid suspension until spring 2015. In February 2022, he was arrested by the LAPD for a domestic violence incident with his wife on a flight from Los Angeles to Houston. After posting bond, his wife said that he did not put his hands on her - rather they had a verbal argument. The charges were dropped. Two months ago, Peterson was arrested for fourth-degree DWI. He was traveling 83mph in a 55mph zone with a blood-alcohol content of .14. Peterson is likely bound for the Hall-of-Fame after winning Offensive Rookie of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, and MVP in his career. In addition to the Vikings, he played for the New Orleans Saints, Arizona Cardinals, Washington Redskins, Detroit Lions, Tennessee Titans, and Seattle Seahawks. He holds the record for most rushing yards in an NFL game with 296.

Reports: Texans to sign former first-round pick Damon Arnette

June 18 - The Houston Texans are signing former first-round pick Damon Arnette Jr., who has not played in the NFL since legal problems derailed his career in 2022, multiple outlets reported Wednesday. The defensive back worked out for the Texans on June 9 ahead of the team's minicamp. Arnette most recently played for the Houston Roughnecks of the UFL, racking up 18 tackles and an interception in the recently completed season. Arnette, 28, was selected No. 19 overall by the Las Vegas Raiders in the 2020 draft. He played in 13 games (seven starts) before being hit with felony gun charges stemming from an incident at a Las Vegas casino in January 2022. Arnette was accused of brandishing a .45-caliber handgun during an argument with casino valets. Arnette was sentenced to community service and fined $2,000 in August 2023 after agreeing to a plea deal. The Raiders released Arnette in November 2021 amid two lawsuits and a troubling video posted by the player. The video showed Arnette repeatedly threatening to kill someone while brandishing what appeared to be semi-automatic weapons. The Kansas City Chiefs, who had signed Arnette to a reserve contract, released him after the arrest at the casino. Injuries limited Arnette to 13 games (seven starts) in his one-plus seasons with the Raiders. He didn't record any interceptions and had 29 tackles. Arnette told Houston television station KPRC 2 earlier this spring that he initially was rejected by the UFL by Daryl Johnston, the executive vice president of football operations, because of his past. Arnette said that led to a change, and Johnston reconsidered. "One, I had to take a look in the mirror," Arnette said. "I had to make some serious life changes. And the main thing that I did was I invited back my support system, my foundation, and that's probably something I will never let go of again because I see how dangerous it is to be trying to navigate in a new world, new environment, new situations with no experience.
