Major disruptions expected as power failure halts trains
Commuters have been advised to look for alternate routes with a power supply issue at Strathfield Station to cause chaos on the journey home.
Transport for NSW said major disruptions were expected to impact all trains running between Central and Strathfield.
That includes the T1 North Shore & Western Line, T2 Inner West & Leppington Line, T3 Liverpool & Inner West Line, T8 Airport & South Line, T9 Northern Line, Central Coast & Newcastle Line and Blue Mountains Line.
Shortly before 4pm, it was reported that trains had come to a halt at platforms on the impacted lines. Replacement buses have been requested but are not yet operational.
At Parramatta Station, large crowds grouped out the front of the Opal gates as staff temporarily blocked access to the platforms in an effort to avoid crowding.
Just after 4pm, passengers were told by station staff there was 'nothing happening between now and the next half hour or so' before replacement buses arrived. By 4.15pm, commuters were once again piling on to the platforms.

The cause of the power supply issue is currently under investigation, but Transport for NSW confirmed it's not weather related.
Transport for NSW will provide an update on the unfolding situation at 4.30pm.

Ferries cancelled, flights affected as thick blanket of fog descends over Sydney
Flights have been affected, ferries have been brought to a standstill and motorists are facing traffic nightmares from a thick blanket of fog which has descended over Sydney. Eerie pictures show fog blanketing the Sydney Harbour Bridge on Monday, reducing visibility to barely more than 100 metres during morning peak hour. Sydney Ferries suspended all voyages for a time. Flights have also been affected, with air traffic control spacing out arrivals and departures due to the poor visibility. Road users were being cautioned right across the metro area. 'Reduced visibility in fog will make road conditions dangerous during Monday in all suburbs,' an early morning Bureau of Meteorology alert said. However, by 8.30am the issues on the road had eased. 'The road weather alert for all suburbs has been cancelled, but the situation will continue to be monitored and further alerts will be issued if necessary,' an updated alert says. Despite conditions easing on the roads, ferries were not expected to operate. 'No Sydney ferries are running at all due to the heavy fog,' Sydney Ferries said on Monday morning. 'Make alternative travel arrangements.' However, as the fog lifted, ferries from began operating again, from about 9am, a Transport for NSW spokesman told NewsWire. Footage posted online shows the thick blanket of fog engulfing the city. While there are blue skies above the low level of fog, the mist covers city skyscrapers and landmarks. Video posted from what appears to be an apartment, at least 15 stories high, shows just the top of the Sydney Tower poking out. 'Most of the Sydney landmarks – Harbour Bridge, Opera House and even some of the Sydney Tower, are still asleep behind a blanket of fog. I think it's giving us a message for the start of the work week,' the video caption reads.

Sydney Airport warns of flight delays, ferry services impacted as Harbour City covered by thick layer of fog
Sydneysiders' travel plans have been thrown into disarray on Monday morning as the city is blanketed by a thick layer of fog. Commuters have been warned of possible flight delays at Sydney Airport, while ferry services have also been impacted due to the hazy conditions. A Sydney Airport spokesperson confirmed just before 8.30am that flights had been affected, with travellers urged to check with their airline for updates. "Heavy fog is impacting flights across the network, and we advise passengers to check the status of their flight with their airline," a short statement read. Commuters have been told to allow extra travel time on the ferry network as services get back up and running after earlier being cancelled. "Ferries are starting to resume following heavy fog earlier," a statement read by Transport for NSW. "Continue to allow plenty of extra travel time, listen to announcements and check information displays as services return to normal." Earlier, all ferry services had been suspended due to the weather conditions, with travellers urged to consider catching a train or bus to their destinations.

The least punctual train lines in Sydney revealed
All six of Sydney's major suburban train lines have failed to meet punctuality targets set by Transport for NSW, with one in five peak hour services running late in some of the worst-affected lines despite a decade-long project to improve the network's reliability. The worst performing train lines on average in the past five years have been the T1 North Shore and T9 Northern Line, with an average of just 86 and 88 per cent of all services running on time, respectively. It is below Sydney Trains' benchmark to have at least 92 per cent of peak-hour suburban services arrive at stations within five minutes of their scheduled time. Annual performance averages show every train line except for the T8 Airport and South line has not met this target for more than three years. The most punctual train lines were the T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra line and the T8 Airport and South line, with 90 and 92 per cent of all services, respectively, coming on time. A handful of stations on Sydney's train network are also equipped with Sydney Metro stations, making them optimal for commuters looking to transfer between train and metro services. For example, Epping station on the T9 Northern Line and Chatswood station on the T1 North Shore Line both serve as popular interchanges for commuters. However, one in five – or 20 per cent – of all T1 North Shore and T9 Northern line train services did not arrive on time in the 2024-25 financial year. This means while a metro trip from Epping to Victoria Cross, instead of to the nearby North Sydney station, can shave 21 minutes off a trip, any time saved is potentially lost if commuters need to wait for delayed trains at interchange stations. In comparison, the T8 Airport and South line was the most punctual train line in 2025, with 91 per cent of services arriving within five minutes of their scheduled time. The only years when more than 90 per cent of all services on all six train lines ran on time were 2020, 2021, and 2022 – two of which were beset by COVID-19 lockdowns and reduced patronage.
