Cheteshwar Pujara and Michael Vaughan
NEW DELHI: Out-of-favour India batter
Cheteshwar Pujara
took a light-hearted dig at former England captain
Michael Vaughan
by asking him to autograph a framed copy of his incorrect prediction from the 2020–21 India-Australia Test series.
The cheeky moment unfolded in the studio ahead of the first Test between India and England at Headingley, Leeds, on Friday, June 20.
Pujara surprised Vaughan by presenting him with a printed version of his old post on social media, in which Vaughan had confidently predicted a 4-0 whitewash of India in Australia. Both Pujara and Vaughan are part of the commentary panel for the ongoing five-match Test series.

The exchange left fellow commentators, including Sunil Gavaskar and Harsha Bhogle, thoroughly amused.
Vaughan's tweet had read: "Told ya … India are going to get hammered in the Test Series … #AUSvIND #4-0."
India famously defied that prediction, clinching the series 2-1 despite the absence of key players like Mohammed Shami and captain
Virat Kohli
. The team drew the Sydney Test and chased down 328 on the final day at Brisbane to seal one of its most historic overseas series wins.
In the first Test currently underway at Leeds, England captain
Ben Stokes
won the toss and opted to bowl first.
India handed a debut to Sai Sudharsan, while Karun Nair made his comeback to the Test team after eight years.
England, meanwhile, fielded a relatively inexperienced bowling attack, with frontline pacers Jofra Archer, Mark Wood, and Gus Atkinson unavailable due to injuries.
True to form, Vaughan has once again backed England to win the series, but Indian fans remain hopeful under new Test captain Shubman Gill.

India's last Test series win in England came in 2007, when Rahul Dravid led the team to a 1-0 victory.
Their most recent tour in 2021–22 ended in a 2-2 draw.
While England has maintained an unbeaten home Test series record under Ben Stokes's leadership since mid-2022, the current challenge is compounded by their depleted bowling unit.
India will be eyeing their first Test series win on English soil in 17 years, while England look to preserve their formidable home record under Stokes.

IND vs ENG, 1st Test: Shubman Gill's captaincy debut mirrors Virat Kohli's as dominant India take control on Day 1 at Headingley

Shubman Gill celebrates after reaching his hundred. (Pic credit: BCCI) A new era of Indian Test cricket began with poise and purpose on Friday as Shubman Gill's India stamped their authority on the opening day of the first Test against England at Headingley in the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy. Sent in to bat after England captain Ben Stokes won the toss, India overcame early challenges to finish the day at a commanding 359/3 - their highest-ever Day 1 total in a Test in England. Scaorecard: India vs England, 1st Test Day 1 Skipper Gill led from the front with an unbeaten 127, becoming only the fourth Indian to score a century in his maiden innings as Test captain, emulating legends like Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli. Yashasvi Jaiswal's sublime 101 and a composed unbeaten 65 from vice-captain Rishabh Pant added to India's dominance. Their combined efforts have put India firmly in control, making a bold statement in their first Test since the retirements of stalwarts Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and R Ashwin. Debut disappointment for Sai Sudharsan Much was expected from debutant Sai Sudharsan, but the 23-year-old endured a harsh introduction to Test cricket. Handed cap No. 317 by Cheteshwar Pujara, Sudharsan came in at No. 3 but was dismissed for a duck after just four balls — becoming the first Indian debutant since 2011 to suffer such a fate. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Eat 1 Teaspoon Every Night, See What Happens A Week Later [Video] getfittoday Undo His nervous stay ended when Ben Stokes, attacking with discipline, found the edge through to the keeper. The early dismissal slightly dented India's promising 91-run opening stand between KL Rahul (42) and Yashasvi Jaiswal. India went into lunch at 92/2, with questions looming about their new-look middle order. How Shubman Gill prepared for the first Test vs England in Leeds | Exclusive from Nets Yashasvi Jaiswal continues dream run Yashasvi Jaiswal once again proved why he is India's most exciting red-ball batting prospect. The 23-year-old left-hander struck his fifth Test century — and third against England — to continue his remarkable trend of scoring hundreds in the opening Test of every overseas series he's played. Jaiswal's 101 off 159 balls featured 16 fours and a six. His innings was a fine blend of restraint and aggression, beginning with a fluent drive off Woakes and building into a commanding knock that blunted England's bowling attack. Notably, he added 129 runs with Gill for the third wicket, a partnership that pulled India away from early trouble and toward a position of dominance. Captain Gill matches Kohli's feat with commanding century In his first outing as Test captain, Shubman Gill showed exactly why he's been trusted to lead India into a new era. Calm under pressure, the 25-year-old constructed a majestic innings, reaching his sixth Test century and his third against England. His unbeaten 127 off 175 balls was a masterclass in timing, intent, and authority. He reached his fifty off just 56 balls — his fastest in Tests — and didn't let up. With 14 crisp boundaries, Gill joined Hazare, Gavaskar, and Kohli as the only Indians to score a century in their first innings as Test captain. At 25 years and 285 days, he also became the youngest Indian skipper to record a fifty on captaincy debut. His composure, combined with tactical clarity, suggests India's transition may be in safe hands. Pant adds spark, India finish Day 1 at 359/3 R ishabh Pant added the late flourish, accelerating after Jaiswal's dismissal to notch up a confident 65* off 102 balls. The Gill-Pant stand remains unbroken at stumps, already worth 138 runs for the fourth wicket. England's bowlers, barring Ben Stokes (2/43), struggled to extract much from the surface. Brydon Carse took the only other wicket, while the rest of the attack looked toothless against India's batting discipline. India's 359/3 is their highest Day 1 total in England, surpassing the 338/7 scored at Edgbaston in 2022. It's also the highest Day 1 score by any visiting team in England since 2003, when South Africa posted 362/4 at The Oval. Game On Season 1 kicks off with Sakshi Malik's inspiring story. The 25-year-old bagged a thrilling ton as his impressive innings steered India to 359/3 at stumps on Day 3. Gill's knock not only steadied India after the early wickets of KL Rahul and Sai Sudharsan, but also sent a strong message in this new era without Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. His composed ton laid the foundation for a solid first innings and showcased his growing maturity as both a batter and leader. Alongside Gill, vice-captain Rishabh Pant too put in a solid innings, reaching 65 from 102 deliveries. After coming in for Sai Sudharsan at number five, the 27-year-old deputy has been relentlessly putting up a show against England's bowling line-up. Shubman Gill Slams Ton, Makes History In 1st Game As India Captain. Joins Virat Kohli, Sunil Gavaskar

Shubman Gill 's 1st day in office as India Test captain began on a historic note as the 25-year-old slammed his sixth Test ton in style against England on Day 1 of the first test at Headingley. After Rohit Sharma 's retirement, Gill was chosen for the captain's position. If there were any apprehensions (with a poor overseas record as batter), Gill put that all to rest slamming only his second Test ton outside India. At 25 years and 285 days, Gill is the fourth youngest behind Herbie Taylor, Alastair Cook and Steven Smith to score a ton in his first match as captain. He is the 23rd player to slam a century in his debut innings as captain. Among Indians he is the fourth after Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, Virat Kohli to achieve the feat. According to Yograj, Gill must set his individual scoring target high and take the team with him. He also dropped the series prediction and believes India has the potential to conquer England and stand victorious on the opposition's territory for the first time since 2007. "A few days ago, I was talking to Yuvraj Singh about Abhishek (Sharma) and Shubman Gill. Yuvraj said he would have to lead from the front. As Shubman Gill goes out to bat, he has to stay at the crease for the maximum time. When a captain leads from the front, and scores run. It is important for Shubman to set a target of 100, 200 or 300. He has to lead from the front. He also has to take everyone forward together, just like Kapil Dev did in the 1983 World Cup. I believe India will win the series," Yograj told ANI. India is poised to witness a new era in the Test format without its batting mainstays, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who retired from the format last month. India has infused young blood and a new skill set to fill the gap left by the departure of the two seasoned pros. Apart from the batting bigwigs, India will miss off-spinner Ravichandran Aswhin and the plethora of variations he brought. Ashwin had his last dance in Australia and announced his retirement midway through the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
